I have a couple of questions that will show my extreme unexperience. First of all, what does "depth" mean when talking about a race. Such as 15 deep or 20 deep? Also, what would the initials "GC" stand for in a catagory of races? Thanks a bunch,

GC = general classification.
So in something like the TDF, the GC tells you who has the least accumulated time overall.

In races I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) if the prize list says it is 15 deep, then they award points to the first 15 people...

That's it.
End of thread.

When my book comes out, it'll explain everything else.

Actually it's the overall field of the race. It is not mountain performance, youngest rider, male or female or racing category. It's where a rider fits in the overall field of racers. The Polka Dotted mountin king, white jerseyed young guy, green sprinter, etc are in different classifications but are also members of the GC.

Here, deep has a bit of a different interpretation.

can be # of riders through a corner...."3 deep" ould be 3 abreast, or how far you are from the front, "8 deep in the sprint" would be 8th place.

Oh yeah....GC = general classement. Lowest overal time....:)
