Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Improved chain/sprocket life technique

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

If you don't have derailer gears, there's a technique you can use to extend the lifespan of your drivetrain parts. See my new article on this:

$5 says that sheldon gets blazed every once in a while and waits for bike related epiphanies.
I've heard of this before but never gave it much thought. My sram PC-1 came with a gold flex-link so I'm going to match that up with the tooth above the pin on my crankarm.

there's one thing I like about this thread so far, and it isn't the prospect of having to match my chain up everytime I derail it

that won't work unless your chainring is also has an even number of teeth. it doesn't matter where on the chainring the chain is, it's the cog that matters.

When I first converted my road bike to fixed, I was explaining it to my father over the phone, and referenced some of Sheldon's articles (in some way like, "there's this guy who has all of these articles, Sheldon Brown..."), and he cut me off and said, "oh, I know who Sheldon Brown is."
