Triathlon - What's a good 1.5k swim time?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I am wondering where I am at right now in terms of doing it in a timely manner. I can swim 30 laps no problem, it is just building speed at this point I think.

Check out the results of a few olympic length tris. I would say, anything mid pack is good.

Yeah, none of these races are exactly 1500 m, so you'll need to check out the previous year's results for whatever race you're doing. In the pool, 22 minutes is pretty good but the top guys would do more like 18 minutes.

Well dang it, I am a good 10 minutes away from 22 minutes right now. Then again, I am not really a swimmer, and have only been swimming for a month or two.

That's ok, I'm almost as far off as you are. You can make up a lot in the run.

By 30 laps, do you mean there AND back?
1.5 K turns out to be about 66 lengths in the pool (assuming it's a 25 yard pool).
Are you male/female?
I'm a swimmer, so my perspective might be skewed, but my best guess would be that a good time would be less than 20 minutes and average would be under 25.

In my experience, you don't need to be that great of a swimmer to be mid-pack. This summer I could swim 1500m in about 27 minutes in the pool but did it in 29 minutes in an open water tri. I was solidly in the top 3rd overall and my agegroup. It was a pretty big tri - 900 or so participants.

I need to get back into triathlons...and in shape...I think this could be fun...as a former swimmer(trying to get back into it after a year off) i'm a little surprised at the times, i too would assume a sub 20 min 1500, in a pool, in open water all bets are off, i've had open water miles ranging from just under 18min to over 23min, check out last years times.

Agree.
I'm not sure what the OPs question is. I think the other posts are saying what's a good time just for a swim. Your response answers what's a good time considering there's a race with two more legs to go.
I'm with Stan. A good 1500 meter time for me is anything under 28 in the pool and 30 in open water. I, likewise, am in the top third overall in the tri's I compete in. In the 50-60 age bracket, I will me much closer to the top.

Sounds like somebody's having a big birthday this year!!!

Heck, when you're 55, ALL birthdays are big. Certainly a "sheet-cake" is needed to hold all the candles!
