A lot of the Smoothie recipes I see call for 1% milk, but I'm a skim drinker. Does using skim milk as opposed to 1% make any difference, specifically regarding consistency? I've always thought my smoothies to be a bit---I don't know---airy? Haven't tried 1% to see if there's a difference.

I have actually started using orange juice in mine. Here is my recipe.

Orange juice (about 1/2 cup)
Strawberries (about 4)
Low Fat Vanilla Yogurt (70 calories) one small container
One scoop Optimum Nutrition Vanilla Whey Protein
A good bit of ice to make it about the thickness of a milkshake.

It tastes great, it's my treat at the end of the day.

Have you considered neither skim or 1% and using REAL milk instead?

Did you know that its OXIDISED cholesterol that's harmful, not the real thing and the perverse thing here is that turning milk into milk powder, which is what they use for these skim/ 1% milks oxidises the cholesterol.

So when your doctor or whoever reccomends skim/1% milk for your heart they don't realy know what there talking about. See, http://www.realmilk.com if your interested.

Sorry, maybe my question wasn't specific enough. Is there any difference, aside from fat content, between using skim and 1% milk in smoothies. ;)

Ohh Fluck It...

Pour in some heavy sweetened cream - you know it tastes good!

Not as good as my favorite smoothie recipe:
Ice Cream
Chocolate Syrup
Milk
Malt Powder
--blend all until smooth, garnish with Cool Whip and chocolate sprinkles

Yes. The fat acts as a binder and adds texture. Absent some fat, it will seem more watery.

Yes, that may well be, but have you noticed the effect a banana has on skim milk? Cereal with skim milk and bananas alwasy seems to be much richer than it actually is.

Smoothies with bananas always seem much richer too. Even just a half or third of a banana helps this effect along.
