What make/model/year do you have, and what are your opinions of it?

Im thinking of getting one this summer, not sure what i want to get though. Maybe a vespa!

I had a friend from an old job who rode his motorbicyclemobile to work every day, rain or shine. He told me, he sez, "Expect to lay down your bike at least once or twice a year" when I axed him if I should get me one of them or not. Autobike people, is this true or is this guy just clumsy?

I have had so many bikes over the years I cannot count how many.....
Vespas are nice but very expensive.
Go to www.kymco.com and look at the 250cc scooter.
If you want to get a motorcycle instead of a scooter do yourself a favor
and get a sensible one. Like a Ninja 250/500 or something like that.

I wouldn't get a vespa.. they're overpriced. You can get a sub 300-500cc motorcycle for about the same price and be able to go on the highway.

I have a 80CC Kings Motor installed on a Nishiki Cyclo cross bike in mountain bike configuration. Its one of thost things thats fun to ride, but you wouldn't want your friends to see you on it. Once I'm out of college and can offord it, I'll be getting a real motorcycle.

yeah, thats the one thing thats scaring me away from a vespa (or any scooter), is the fact that if i want to head out of town, they are pretty much useless.

If i were to get a bigger bike (bigger than a vespa, and capable of at least 100km/h!), i dont think i would want to go over 500cc. A friend of mine, his brother, who to the best of my knowledge had very little experience with bikes, made his first motorbike purchase a brand new Yamaha R1. I thought he was f$%ing nuts.

I would like to keep the price around $5k.

Any suggestions?

^^^There are two Vespas that can do over 80 mph. a Gran Tourismo is
one of them. If you can afford a Vespa, it is a high quality product
that can be used on a highway. I rode a 350 mile day and countless 100 +
mile days on my 2-stroke 150cc Stella who made Vespas for a while.
Avoid doing what your friend did and buying a squid(sport) bike first.
You WILL crash it eventually but due to the uncomfortable and compromised
nature of their geometry etc, if you start out on a sportbike you will be
circumventing some necassary riding skills you can only get on a street
specific bike. Guys who get them first (R1's R6's etc)can never hang in the
skills department, so consequently they dont know what to do when a situation
arises. Stuff happens REAL FAST on a motorcycle. If you cant handle them quickly
you are in big trouble. I laff out loud underneath my helmet evertime I smoke
a Ninja on a backroad on my lowly, mud caked DR650. Speaking of which....
A small Dual Sport bike like a Suzuki DR 250 is another bike Id look into.
Easy to handle, cheep and as reliable as dirt !!!

Yes there are vespas that are highway worthy.. but with an 80mph MAX speed, I wouldn't be too comfortable with that. I mean, when was the last time you ran your car at red line on a long trip. My primary gripe with vespas is that they're kind of like buying a rivendell bike. They're nice to look at, beautiful, but for half the money you can easily get something with similar and usually better performance.

My coworker rode some 50cc's for a while and the first real bike he bought was a R1, I think he's on his 4th one now in the past 5 years. The 06' black model is amazing and light as all hell. He often does his night commute at over 160mph going home on 1 loney stretch of highway, not that I'm saying you should but it's doable and handles very well with his new ohlins adjustable damper.

And the sucker is LIGHT. I can pick it up off the ground easy if its dropped and I'm pretty weak.

yeah, i realize that, but for now i just want to start out. The only motorbike i have ever rode was this one! Riding around the mountains of Nagano, Japan, at times it was hard hitting 30km/h, but it was such a fun bike to ride.

Yeah, until you hit someone or thing and die horribly taking innocent people out with you.

Look I am all for speeding but people who do stuff like the guys in that video should be humanely put down. They are a danger to themselves and others.

i should also mention i am in no way looking for a speed demon of a bike. The fastest ill do in my car is 120km/h (highway) and i rarely break the speed limit in the city. Too many things can go wrong with pedestrians/cats/ice etc.

i agree with ReptilesBlade that people that do that stuff need to be tought a lesson. Maybe a 2X4 into the front wheel would do the trick.

Here's my 77 yamaha xs650. I bought it as a starter bike when I got my license for $500, it was in 97. Still have it, haven't put much more $$ into it & its still a blast to ride. I have 2 now, plus my wife's harley and a bsa project bike thats in pieces. The below pic is pretty old, but serves the purpsoe.

sv650's or ninja ex250's are nice bikes to begin motorbiking and the SV will be a good bike for the long haul when you get experience. then again the ninja 250 is more than enough bike for most situations. i started on the ninja, it's affordable and looks nice.

if you get a motorbike, you're going to fall at least once. probably once in the first year. if you don't fall, you'll get hit by an automobile. this is just probability, there's a higher risk for error than with a self powered bike.

the hayabusa is not a beginner's bike. it can spin the back wheel too easily, also it's too expensive and wears out all the consummable parts quickly. but it looks BOSS!

I worked my way up to a Yamaha FZX 750. Full header exhaust. I worked on the carbs until it was almost unridable in traffic, but accelerated so fast that my wife had a blackout while riding pillion. I had her trained to reach around and put her hands under my thighs so I could hold her on with my legs. One day I woke up and sold it. Get rid of it or die kind of thing. If I get a bike again it will be something tamer like a 650 thumper. Suzy DR650 etc.
