Mine's lame.
Company flew me to Houston for a job interview. Night before was filled with vodka tonics. I spent ~30 minutes in the GWB airport puking my guts up in the bathroom. The flight down was miserable. What's worse was the shuttle took me to the wrong hotel. The owner of the hotel was a mother****ing wonderful lady, however. I think she could tell I wasn't in a good state and offered me a room for a couple of hours until she was done with work then she would take me to my proper hotel. I puked a few more times, got some unrestful sleep and she drove me to where I was supposed to be. Really nice lady, we chatted it up all the way there (I think she wanted my hot bod!).
I didn't get the job. Didn't really want the job.
Anyway, I'm sure you folkses have some pretty good stories to tell.

Uh that sounds nighmarish
But, nah, I don't have any "horror" stories. The worst I can remember was a couple of years ago when I was in Galapagos. We took a boat to go to another island. The trip was 4 hours and I was sea-sick for 3 and a half. I'd never been before and never have since, and I don't know if it's allways this bad... my stomach was empty and I just kept having these painful spasms. Staying inside made it 100 times worse so I was just standing outside. After about 2 hours I was so exhausted I was afraid I'd faint and fall overboard never to be heard of again...

I get bad seasickness too. My scuba instructor called me the Seasick King because I threw up on the way out, took pills and went below to sleep it off. When I woke up and went in the water, I got seasick again while diving threw kelp beds. The waving motion from the kelp leaves was too much for me, and I had to rush up to the surface to throw up again. Bleh.
I have a story my friend from work shared last night during our happy hour... :p
Wow peregrine, you go all over the place lol. The galapagos, sand dunes with atvs:) and skiing haha
My worst was prolly in chicago trying to non rev out for a day and then having to wait for the next day. Then delta's flight computer system got a glitch so they sent a lot of their people to American so it messed us up even more. Soo we ended up going to North west arkansas regional lol near fayetteville or something. There was a good chance wed get back, but oh no the only super 80 that comes that day doesnt show so we have to try and get on little american eagle planes. So with me and my family being in the last like 10 people left we dont get on for that day. Ohgreat! Then we had to take a hotel at embssy suites, a 15 min drive away. but i got a yummy dinner there. So finally the next day we got the 2nd 7am flight out on the crj=D

My friend and his sister were coming back from a trip to India and had a lay-over in Bangkok, Thailand. During the lay-over, they went to town to do some shopping. But, once they come back to the airport he discovers that he had lost his passport!
His sister insists that she has to get on the plane with or without him, because she has an important meeting back in the States. She leaves him and starts boarding the plane while he's left to scour the city for his passport.
When she reaches the seats, she sees a family of four taking their seats and she suddenly has a change of heart. She talks to the flight attendants and finally convinces the captain that she just can't go on! They tell her that if she gets off, they have to evacuate the entire plane and then empty all bags from the cargo-hold and re-board all over again.
So, that's what happened. She gets her luggage and hops in a taxi to look for her brother. Only problem is, Bangkok is a huge city!
She asks the taxi driver if he had seen anyone who resembles her brother. Of course, he hadn't, but the taxi driver gets on the radio and asks all the drivers from his company to be on the lookout.
Luckily, her brother had used the same taxi company that his sister was riding with. One of the other drivers actually pointed them to a hotel where he had dropped off her brother. Incredibly, another driver reported that the passport was left in a cab and that he took it to Lost-and-Found at the airport.
So, they come back to the airport, and a representative of the airline told his sister that her earlier stunt had cost the airline $10,000, because of the delay she caused!!

I was at a church retreat in Chicago this New Year's. The day before I was to return, I got a call from United Airlines saying my 6:00 AM flight for the next day had been cancelled. No reason given. There were some claims of weather, but we're talking the next day here. Anyway, I call the booking number and end up booking the last seat on the last flight available to Portland at 8:00 PM - 14 hours late! That part actually worked out well, because I got to spend a bunch of extra time with friends that I see at most once a year, but it was still frustrating and confusing.
Next step, I get to the airport and I think, "Gee. The check-in lines sure are long." It turns out, that United's entire nationwide computer system had crashed (I confirmed this was unrelated to my earlier cancellation). After waiting in line for over an hour (fortunately they pushed back the departure times), they give me a blank boarding pass, and scribble my name and flight number on it. Since it wasn't computer issued, TSA then had to frisk me. "Finally" I think. I'm done.
I get to my gate, and see a pretty blue and slate 757 parked there waiting for me. Immediately, a tractor drives up and pushes it away. I'm a little shocked. There's no way I missed my flight. The sign still says half an hour until boarding. Eventually a boarding agent makes an announcement that there was a problem with the plane, and they would find another one, hopefully the same size or larger (remember this is a packed flight, and with the other cancellations, there's a lot of stand-bys). After another hour, they bring in another 757 and we board but then have to sit for another hour while they sort out luggage. Around 11:30, we finally pull away from the gate. I sleep through most of the flight and we land uneventfully. I head down to baggage claim only to find myself with no suitcase. Well, it turns out my luggage got stuck on the next flight. When I get my luggage, it is 2:45 AM Portland time, so I decide that rather than pay $20 for a cab, I'll sleep on the couches until the light rail starts running at 5:15.
Light rail takes me to a transit center where I plan to catch the #40 bus the rest of the way home, then catch a nap before going to work. I get on the #40 and zone out for about 15 minutes, but when I look out the window, I realize I have no clue where I am. After I end up at a community college on the far side of town from my destination, I ask the bus driver what number I'm on, to which she replies "The number 44."
"Well $hi7!" I think. In my tired stupor I got on the wrong bus. Riding it back towards the transit center, I see a sign marked as a stop for both the 40 and the 44, so I jump. Lo and behold, I turn around to watch the bus drive away and see that it's sign says "40 - Mocks Crest," [I]exactly the bus I'd sworn I caught earlier! No longer trusting TriMet, I walked 2 miles with my suitcase and backpack to the transit center, caught a bus that not only said #40 but was also running the #40 route, and made it home at about 8:30.
From there, I took a shower, ate breakfast, drove to work and was mostly useless all day.
I lived in NJ, working for a BMW Motorcycle dealership. I elected to take a weeklong training seminar in Schuamberg, IL. I decided this was a great chance to put some miles on my bike, even tho' it was the end of October.
The ride out, over two days, was beautiful! Cruised the turnpike, stereo kicking, light gloves on and my Heine-Gerike jacket opened in the right places to act as an air scoop. As I pull into the hotel it begins a light drizzle.
That night the temp dropped to the low 30's and stayed there the entire week. My commute to and from school was only a few miles so it wasn't that bad. But friday the temp dropped to the 20's and leaving school at 4 in the afternoon and heading home was brutal. Luckily, I had packed all my cold weather gear and bundled up to the max.
I made it just into Indiana that night chilled to the bone. Got a room, took a hot shower, had dinner and went to bed. Up before the sun the next day the temp had now gone to the teens and I had three states to cross. Tucking in behind the fairing and doing alot of one handed riding, with the other one on the motor to warm up, I proceded to cross those states in the 95 to 105 speed range. This burned about a tank of gas between rest stops where I'd go in grab a hot chocolate to thaw out, fill the tank and get back at it. I fuigered "What's the worst that could happen if I were stopped? They'd put me in jail. At least I'd be warm"
It wasnt until I came down off the Allegheney plateau west of Harrisburg, that the temps came back up to a point that it was reasonably comfortable to ride.
That, was my polar bear ride. :)

My worst travelling story was in Bonaire.. beautiful settings, couldnt wait to enjoy the sand and coctails and to make it more perfect, I had hope I wouldnt see too many speedos, ever noticed how speedos are always worned by the exact men who shouldnt waer them!
Any way, at night we took our rented jeep to a place called"bahamabreeze" and while having a few coctails, our jeep was stolen and used for a gas station robbery and one of the passengers shoot a tourist.. well...we were surprised to have he cops all looking for us... good thing the tourist was OK and while in the hospital was able to erase all doubt that we were the guilty ones..
pass me a drink and let's fly back to quiet but peaceful NH please..

On the Michigander one year, back in my younger and stupider days, my dad and I almost got in a fight with a group of hicks because they were screaming obscenities at riders and I screamed back. I was carrying a large dagger and a bottle of amonia, and my dad was carrying a frame pump filled with bird shot in order to make it very heavy. Its lucky they stopped following us and that there was no fight, because it would have likely been deadly.
Won't do anything that stupid again.

I guess the worst I can think of happened when I was a kid. My family and I (brother and parents) were driving from here (Florida) to Michigan to see extended family. My little brother started complaining of a stomach ache. I had one too, but wasn't complaining (trying to be a "man" about it....though I was only about 11 or 12). Finally, my parents decided "better safe than sorry", so they stopped at a hospital emergency room in Georgia to have my brother looked at.
When we stopped, I told mom & dad that my stomach had been hurting too. They thought I was just jealous of the attention so ignored me and told me to stay in the van while they went in with my brother. Well, shortly after they left it got bad enough I had to vomit. In fact, I spent about an entire hour vomiting in the parking lot from van door, before I finally went in to look for them (having to stop and vomit in nearly every bathroom I found).
I finally found them and they FINALLY believed me when they went out and saw the huge puddle of vomit (isn't that a nice visual?) beside the van. They released my brother with just a little medicine, but thought I was bad enough they wanted to admit me and keep me overnight.
They THOUGHT I had appendicitis and I even remember them prepping me in a room, cleaning my stomach with alcohol and drawing a line or two on my stomach. Then at some point, they decided it wasn't appendicitis, just a bad case of the flu. They kept me overnight and let me go the next morning.
We still felt pretty miserable, but still had 2 days of driving ahead of us to make it through. I'm glad they realized it wasn't my appendicitis before taking it out for nothing.
In high school, my parents moved to Maine. I stayed in school in Maryland.
One Christmas I flew into Logan Airport(Boston) in a snow storm. We got re-routed to Newark and sat in the plane for 3 hours. Then we headed for Boston again. The landing was delayed while they tried to plow ahead of the storm. I landed 1 hour later. My mom had left Maine in a blizzard to pick me up. She broke down in New Hampshire. In the meantime, a golf club had become jammed in the baggage belt and many flights worth of luggage became jammed up inside the bagge tunnels. When I got one of my bags, it was 2 hours later and my mom still was not there. 5 hours after I landed, my mom made it. As she pulled the ignition key out of the ignition, it broke off. 2 hours to get that straightened out. We headed back to Maine. It was now 11:00 PM. I had left Baltimore at 9:00 AM. We tried calling home to tell my father what was up and got no answer. Anyway, 6 hours of blizzard driving( good conditions, under 2 hours) we made it home. My father was not there. He had had a heart attack and was in the local hospital. A trip that should have taken no more than 6 hours, including drive time, took almost 22 hours.
Bottom Line - Terrible trip with good outcome. We made it safely home and my dad got out of the hospital 6 days later.

Dunno about best story, but some horrible coincidences....
My GF(wife, now) and I were heading up to Philly to see my best friend(old Army buddy) around Christmas one year. Had all the travel plans taken care of well in advance. My little brother drove us to the airport. Well, he tried to. Turned out that he had no idea how to get there via the interstate and neither did we. Plus, we weren't paying any attention to where he was going. By the time we realize what's happened, we're somewhere in downtown Nashville and late for our flight. We get on standby and catch the next one about 2 hours later. I call my friend to let him know we're gonna be late. We get there, get picked up and have a wonderful week full of fantastic cheesesteaks, site-seeing and a fun night a Dave & Buster's. Time to head back home. My best friend knows how to get to the airport, thankfully. Unfortunately, there's an accident on the interstate and we miss our flight back....
I'm pretty sure I've had worse experiences than that, but I must've repressed the memories or somethin'.

I've been known to stop for the night just driving to Philly from Nashville. Of course, that's mostly 'cause I suck at planning road trips.:)
I haven't had any really horrific things happen on vacation (or, if they have, I've blocked them out). One could have gone horribly wrong....
A friend and I flew to London and then hopped a commuter jet to Paris. It had been a LONG day so as we made our way to ground level, we were arguing about if we wanted to take a cab or the metro to the hotel. She'd never been to Paris before and, for some reason, thought that the airport was right near where we needed to be. A man walked up to us and asked if we needed a cab. We followed him until he came to an elevator and got on. I hung back because I was thinking that we were on the ground floor and that the cab stand would be just outside. The minute he told us to get into the elevator, cops swarmed him. Turned out that they had been watching him for a while because he'd been robbing people and leaving them in the middle of nowhere. We spent the rest of the day in the airport and police station guarded by a very nice looking young officer with whom I later spent some time. *sigh* Good times.

Last year my wife and I took a trip to NC's outer banks for our anniversary.
3 hours into the 4 hr trip, my old Volvo starts to die on a 3 mile bridge in the middle of a rainstorm.
The car dies as we make it to 'dry' land, a place called 'The Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge'.
The place is totally uninhabited, the sun is setting, and it's raining like mad.
We get towed to the beach, rent a car, and try to get the Volvo fixed.
There are no Volvo specialists (or decent mechanics) within 100 miles, it seems.
Some braindead mechanics try to sell me a new alternator, but it will take two days to arrive.
We drive the rental car back to Durham, I buy a part from my Volvo guy, and drive back down to the beach.
I repair the Volvo myself (Alternator Brush Kit - 20 bucks) in the parking lot of the auto mechanics at the beach.
So that was my vacation/anniversary last year. Never saw the beach, never took the bikes out of the wagon, never even saw the sun - it rained during the whole ordeal. Plus, I spent around 16 hours driving in under a 36 hour period. Joy.

I drove out to Oregon a couple years ago to hang with a buddy for a week. I drove because he'd been storing an ebay purchase for me for a couple years & I had to tow it home. Anyhow, I meant to leave on Fri afternoon, but it took us a while to load the car onto the trailer, then a friend of his got his pickup stuck in a mud hole & I wanted to watch the neighbor's bulldozer tow him out. Then the beers started flowing & the moose & elk went on the grill. So I was up late boozing. Anyhow, now leaving about 18 hours late I hope in the rig on Sat morning and start heading home. My pickup goes about 450 miles on a tank of fuel, so it wasn't until I stopped in Missoula, MT at about 9:00 that night that I discovered my Visa card was gone (I figure I left it in southeastern WA at my last stop). It was too late at night to call anyone that could help me out, so I spent my last $45 in cash on fuel and a hamburger, then climbed back in and drove a couple more hours. I slept at the top of a pass, on the side of the road, which was a mistake for a couple reasons; 1) its higher at the top of the pass than the bottom and 2) all the semis were up there, idling all night. Anyhow, I got up at dawn to look for coffee. That was a beautiful morning, watching the sunrise coming through the mountains in western MT. Anyhow, by the time I got to Billings I was running on fumes. A friend faxed me a credit card number, plus sent money to a western union. Well, the nearest western union (the bus station) couldn't cover $200, so I had to run back across town to the Kmart, which wasn't the biggest deal in the world, as I got the cash. Anyhow, I finally made it home by about 1AM on Monday morning, dog tired. Next time, I'll carry a cash reserve...

i have 2 stories that come to mind, both funilly enough were the same routes...
So, im staying at my brothers house in Galway, Ireland, i decide i want to visit my Uncle in Kilkee which is down the coast from galway. Basically, the bus travels all the way down the coast to kilkee, but makes a stop in a place called the Cliffs Of Moher (huge tourist area). So the bus ride from Galway to the cliffs takes 2 hours, with a 2 hour wait at the cliffs. Well, the day i went, i was alone, and the fog at the cliffs was unbelievable, it wasnt possible to see 5 feet in front of you. So i just hang around outside, go to the gift shop/resteraunt, then after two hours i go back to where the bus parked, hopped into the bus thinking it was the Cliffs-Kilkee bus, but it was the Cliffs-Galway bus.. Yep, 4 hours of bus rides and i didnt move an inch! I explained the situation to the ticket guy in galway and he gave me another ticket for free, which was pretty nice, but i had to wait another 4 hours for the next bus. Later in the day when i got back to the cliffs, i stayed in the bus and slept. Finally made it to kilkee, and my uncle laughed his a$$ off. This happened 8 years ago, and they still make fun of me about it every time i see them....
Second story,
July 1st, 2005 (canada day) i was in ireland with 2 of my canadian friends. We were in Galway just pub hopping, and we spot someone from where we live in Canada, in fact she's a barteder in the pub i always go to in Canada. So we met her and her friend, talked to them for a bit, and proceed to get extremely BLOTTO DRUNK, dont get home until about 3am, then we had to get the bus to kilkee at 8 am. Well, we wake up at 7.45 to the sound of Magnum PI on my cell phone, its my brother waking our drunk a$$es up. We run to the bus station, and make it on the bus, but only the very back has seats. this thing is packed! so we are still pretty drunk and quite nauseous thanks to the few kebabs we had the night before. How we didnt puke on these bus i have no idea. The roads from Galway-Kilkee are twisty windy bumpy pot-hole filled roads, sitting at the back of the bus made it ten times worse. We almost puked at every turn/bump. Finally we get to the Cliffs, and we just layed on the grass for the full 2 hours just trying to breathe fresh air. Then the 2 hour trip to kilkee wasnt as bad as the first. But it was by far the worst bus ride of my life.

Musta been the Guinness. It makes you strong!
I was in Israel one summer, and a group of us went to Acco, an old Crusader city in the north. We were mostly kids--17-to-21--and when the locals descended on us with offers of $3 rooms, we took them up on it. We had to go through some very narrow, dark alleys to get to the rooms, but the place seemed nice enough.
So our hosts suggested we go to this really great party down by the sea, and we did, but I got a funny feeling and went back to the room, which had just been ransacked. We told the owners about it, but they got a little testy, and accused us of concocting the whole thing and trying to extort money from them. http://www.advrider.com/forums/images/smilies/ne_nau.gif
Things got pretty tense, and then a little out of hand. One of our hosts took a swing at one of the guys in our group, so we retreated to our room, and the guy who'd been hit ran out the back door to get the police, who showed up about half an hour later. Trouble was, the policeman didn't speak English, so our hosts had to translate for us, English-to-Arabic-to-Hebrew. That didn't work too well, but another policeman showed up and knew enough French so that we were able to fill him in with our pidgeon-French.
So they hauled us all down to the police station, sorted things out, kind of, and we wandered back to the bus station at about 6:00 in the morning, minus a couple hundred dollars, my camera and other assorted goodies.
Weird story, but it made for quite a day.

Three days to drive from Florida to Michigan??? That's a day and a half at most.
That reminds me of a rather funny story about two of my dads old friends from the 60's. So these two guys were smuggling drugs into the US from Mexico. Somewhere along the line they managed to infuriate the Bandito's who were very much intending to kill them. From somewhere near the Border, they managed to make it back to Detroit in less than 24 hours utilizing a stolen 67 Mustang. In case anybody wondered, both of these guys are now law abiding.
This one's long, so buckle in.......
My wife and I had our wedding in Cozumel. It was relatively small, with about 25 of our closest friends and family attending. Our entire group arrives at the airport around 5 am, and when my wife and I go to check in, we're told we're on a separate flight from the rest of our party, which was to leave about 30 minutes after ours. "No big deal," we thought, "we'll just meet them at the gate when thery arrive."
We arrive in Cozumel and get our luggage, have our passports stamped, grab a soda and wait outside for them to arrive. An hour goes by with no sign. Two hours and no one's there. While we were waiting, we were talking with some cab drivers outside who kept giving us periodic updates. While they were helpful, we just kept hearing, "Oh, another 15 minutes," every 30 minutes or so. We're finally told their flight has been permanently delayed, with no estimated arrival time. My wife and I decide to take a cab to the hotel, eat some lunch, and wait it out. This was around 11 am.
After having some lunch, taking a nap, and doing a little snorkeling, it's now around 4 pm. The front desk at the hotel knew what was going on, so we would get updates every so often, but every one was, "We still haven't heard anything." Finally we get word that the plane has landed around 6pm, and our tired/cranky party gets to the hotel and tries to shake everything off. At no point, while waiting at the airport, were they once given an explanation for why they were delayed. In fact, a flight going to Cozumel had left before they were able to get on. Still no reason given. They were only going to be there for 3 days, so they has essentially missed 1/3 of their vacation at this point. The rest of the evening was spent preparing for the next day, eating, and drinking.
The following day was the ceremony. We were to have a chaffeur company pick us up at the hotel around 6 pm, because we had about a 30 minute window since the ceremony was on the beach and we wanted to catch the sunset. After 20 minutes, the car had not arrived, so I call and start yelling. We had called the evening before to verify they were to pick us up, and was assured they would be on time. The car arrived 30 minutes late, and we go to the spot.
The ceremony was flawless, so no problems there.
After the ceremony we start going down the line to eat, and notice that there's ants in most of the food. Now, I live in Houston, so ants don't bother me much, but I don't enjoy eating them. I mean, there's LOTS of ants. It seems the caterers had accidentally disturbed a massive ant pile when they were bringing in the food. Luckily there wwas plenty of backup food, so all was well. When we go to cut the cake, it basically falls apart. We look over at the caterer, who was pretty timid after the ant incident, and she rushes over. Apparently they set the cake out way too early, and (July in Cozumel is very humid) it had mostly melted.
I'll skip the story about the DJ, suffice to say that it was more of a nightmare.
The next day, we all get ripped and hang out at the beach. About three of the attendees are pretty "off the wall," and despite advice given by others, decide it would be a good idea to rent some mopeds and drive into town. After about 2 hours we hadn't heard from them, so me and a friend decide to rent a couple (we has sobered up) and make sure they hadn't fallen into some trouble. We get about a mile from the hotel and come upon 2 smashed mopeds, a bloody road, and only one of the three standing on the side of the road. He let us know one of the guys in fron was driving, hit one of those little reflectors in the road, went down, then the guy behind him ran over him, causing the second one to go down. The one standing on the side of the road said the ambulance had just left. Skip to the end; apparently the ambulance drivers had told the guys it would only be a couple hundred dollars for some bandages, antibiotics, etc., but they ended up paying over $2K to get out. Apparently they were told to pay a certain amount or the cops would be called and they would spend a couple days in jail. I don't think they ever received an invoice for the services. Oh, and they had to pay for both the mopeds.
There's much, much more to tell, but I'll summarize:
My wife's brother almost getting arrested, a "questionable" incident with a friend at and "adult" venue (I wasn't there folks), roaches in our room, mold on the boxsprings, maintenance fogging our room at 11 pm, my name spelled wrong on the marriage certificate, 5 hours trying to get ahold of the wedding coordinator, her showing up drunk, spending time at the courthouse where little english is spoken, and on and on and on......
Looking back I think it's funny, because we spent (what to us) was a lot of money, and seemingly received so little. We got some good memories, though.
