Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Who uses bells?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I've got one and attractive people smile when I ring it and
it pisses people off when I call out their mistakes.
Really, all of you bell-less people are crazy and giant hipsters.
You all represent bikers everywhere and your lack of
audible alerts hurts all of us. Singlespeeders with
just one bell? Who are you kidding? Pfft...posegneurs.
When you are older you will learn to love the incredi-bell.

My voice can out "auduble alert" your bell any day.
"WATCH THE F**K OUT" works better than "brrrrrrrring brrrrrrrring"

I remember growing up, I had this sweet ass ****ing bike.
It had this big siren set up on the front with a lmicrophone and oud speaker.
The f'ing bomb.
Every time I ride the Brooklyn Bridge BK to Manhattan I swear I'm getting a bell, but I forget it every time I hit Centre street and start dodging cars instead of tourists...

I preferr "ping ping" to "brrrrrrrring brrrrrrrring".
I had a bike bullhorn myself. It had a siren and something else and loudspeaker mode. Then one night I had it hanging on my closet doorknob and my mother slammed in the door. Accident, she said. Suuuure, says I.

man, bells are for kids that don't know how to ride their bikes. if something is in your way, go around it. don't honk at it. you don't like it when cars do it to you. don't do it to people. or cars. and since i hit the t instead of the r at first. cats too. don't do it to cats.

No bell. Surface to air missile.
for folks w/ conversions, there are these great brass bells with an amazing tone that will thread directly into downtube shifter bosses.

I've heard the legend. Where can I order one?
on the mup's I just go "ding, ding" as i ride past. people seem to like it. in amsterdam the bike bell seemed indispensible. they are useless with cars. you need a freon honker. eff the ozone layer. most urban fix and ss riders in the US probably spend more time in traffic than mixing with peds. so a bell is of limited value. i put one on my mtb, to alert bears and chipmunks.

Oh, MomoVelo, oh, how I miss you.
well, according to

these will thread onto standard downtube bosses:

as of right now i usually just click my brake lever or yell, but this whole bell on the downtube idea just might be what i'm looking for.

It's actually against the law in NYC to ride without a bell. I've gotten several of those tickets over the years.

Actually, it seems to depend. In my experience: A bell will move most Euro tourists better than your voice. Nothing in the world will move most Asian tourists, though shouting is more effective than a bell. Most native New Yorkers are trying to get hit.

Nothing helps much when they have headphones stuck in there ears.

A bell will cut thru traffic/city noise far better than yelling.
A bell will cut thru headphones better than yelling.
A bell is the univeral sound of a bike approaching.
Use the bell first when approaching problem areas. yell when closer for specific problems and direction giving.
Best is to use a bell where there are lots of peds and combine with yelling as needed.

We use one on our tandem. It has been very useful on rides such as RAGBRAI, CANDISC, GRABAAWR, SAGBRAW, CNC, and during our vacations to Sanibel Island in Florida. People haven't seemed to have been upset with us ringing it. But we begin ringing it long before we're right on top of them, so they're not alarmed by us as we pass on our tandem and Burley Piccollo.
We don't use bells on our singles.

momovelo's downtube bell was actually a bell just like matthew a brown's (above) rigged into an empty downtube shifter boss. now you may have one. i would have one if i didn't ride the rough stuff so much. i'd become a ringing, dinging, bouncing irritation riding through the forest.
+1 for the jellibell

I have a "ped whistle" which is meant to be used as a distress call if drowning.
Million Mile Freddy has an airhorn with a big button lifted from a car's dash board.
yeah i've considered hooking up an airhorn...maybe its time...

Mmmmmm... Oberon. One of the few things I miss from MI.
Some guy came into the shop a couple months ago with one of those HUGE horns with the rubber plunger on the end. He said he had gotten it as a loaner from a friend who purchased it in India. The thing was industrial sized and had the sound to match. We advised him to zip tie it onto his handlebars and go at it...

Anyone know which bells have that single zen-like "ding" to them rather than the "bring bring" of most bells? Yes, I know that this is a ridiculous question but maybe someone will know what I'm talking about.
i think the other model from incredibell, has a bell and a spring loaded 'hammer'. ask dynarider, he claims the sustain lasts for hours.
brokenrobot
01-29-06, 08:22 AM
yeah, the incredibell is a one-ding bell. I've got them on two bikes... I chose them more because they're small and will beat the no-bell traffic ticket more than for their utility; they sound nice, but people ignore them completely most of the time.
