Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - I think someone tried to steal my bike...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Or at least my rear wheel. I lock up through the rear triangle, and I guess they thought a simple saw was all it took to get away. So now I have several saw marks on my rear rim up onto the tire. It looks like ****e. Then I realized all my chainring bolts were loose and one was missing. Maybe they thought they could take the chain off and slide the rear wheel out? Again, the lock was through the rear triangle. So the kryptonite lock also has a few saw marks on it as well. I guess they gave up. You can't steal the rear wheel or frame. You will NEVER saw through a bicycle wheel. Can you imagine the **** a wheel could do to a thin ass saw? All the tension from the spokes would cause the rim to rip a saw blade to pieces real quick. SO shady. My rear wheel and frame are sleeping soundly upstairs now though.

maybe the sheldon technique does lead theives to believe the bike is insecurely locked after all

Yoshi

One has to wonder if perhaps that could all have been avoided if part of the frame was also locked to the pole/whatever.

Just playing devil's advocate 'sall.

That's always been the most constant argument against Sheldon's menthod I've heard - it "looks" easy to steal.

I just need TIP's U-lock instead of mine. ****ers recognize.

Well. You scare me, and I haven't met you, so I'm sure you scared them. :)

You SHOULD do that. Molded grip. Good for swinging around while issuing adrenaline filled half-empty threats. THAT would be the perfect U-lock for me.

how long did you leave it locked outside. sounds like they had ****loads of time to **** with it.

kennethalan
01-27-06, 11:34 PM
That's the craziest thing. It was outside during daylight hours across the street from the University of Texas. People everywhere. Not exactly scarce population. That's what I don't understand. The whole thing is confusing. I leave it in my house any other time.

I left my bike today locked in a high rise parking garage all day, luckily without incident.

snip a few spokes (easy) and it's no trouble at all to saw through a rim...

*I lock my bike this way, too, I'm just saying that it doesn't guarantee that your frame will be there when you get back*

Exactly why I don't use it. If a gaggle of bike dorks can't figure out how it secures a bike, how would the average theif fare?

Half the time, U-locks are for show...as in "your crummy hacksaw ain't goin' nowhere, so move along." U-lock through rear wheel / frame + cable through front and you're nearly golden. What's the thief gonna steal now? Sans hassle, they're down to bars, stem, post and saddle-- parts not easily resold or pawned.

The Sheldon method would be great in a perfect world. But while we're accounting for skills of thieves, don't underestimate their lack of intelligence.

All I really need is a spokecard from Shants.

Yeah, you know the one. That's all it takes.

Oh, the folly of man.

It pisses me off that my concept of bike thieves just morphed from "crackheads with hacksaws and monkeywrenches lookin' for a quick-release" to "crackheads with hacksaws and monkeywrenches and Park Multi-Tools lookin' to tear your bike down to the ground."

I had my light stolen last week, and I just now realized that the ****head must have had a screwdriver handy-- I checked out the old clamp today and noticed it was just sitting on the bars sans essential bracket / screw assembly. Hope you like your new blinky flashlight, jerkwad.

school was a real pain the last 4 months so i ducked out. I was pulling 15 hour days, juggling projects, long papers and some really intense finals, but i'm all done now. Honestly, I don't know how i made it, but i'm so glad it's all over.

No need to be scared of me guys, I'm actually pretty nice... unless you try to steal my bike/parts.

I have heard a ****ed up story about a u-lock attack in people's park. Even if I were desperate for crack, I would probably move on to the next bike after meeting you.

On a serious note, even with spoke tension, a shallow rim (velocity razor or mavic open pro) can be cut through in a couple of snips with a large set of bolt cutters. I once cut a rim under tension and was disturbed to see how easily the rear triangle method can be defeated.

in order to defuse the "it looks easy to steal" i generally also slip my ulock around rim and seatstays. just so potential thieves know that they're not getting my bike, that they shouldn't waste time trying to saw through my pieces and **** with my chainring bolts.

humancongereel
01-28-06, 11:30 AM
i used to put it around the seat tube, but i didn't want them to think they could use the frame for leverage and ruin my frame that way.

sad truth--there is no perfect lock or perfect locking method. at least that's what i've gathered from the numerous threads here.

Do a google search for Anal Sex. Look at the first closeup photo that comes up. Now add the words "Steal my bike and I'll Ass**** You."

It was a beautiful example of contemporary art.
