Folding Bikes - Which cycle computer on your folder?

Hi !

I'm thinking of buying a cycle computer for my Dahon Jetstream P8. Does any of you have a CC on your folder(s)?

Thanks
Tomaso

I used to be sponsored and for several years all I got was the entry level CC from Specialized.

Time went by and when was time to get a folder, I just ended up with the same line. It gives me all 7 basic information (speed, average speed, max speed, distance, odometer, time riding and clock), no cadence or any other fancy stuff.

The reason I got one was to keep track of miles riding and to aid me on my (about to start) "career" as a randonneur.

They go now for less than 20 bucks, sme stores you can find it for less than 10 (since a new line from Specialized just came out)

Thanks Rafael,

Lots of BS that sell Specialized here in Belgium. I do want a simple computer, and prefer a wireless one.
Although I've read some bad comments saying wireless CC's aren't really accurate, is this true?

I never consider a wireless one because 1) I cannot imagine any benefit and 2) even if there is a benefit, the cost/benefit (for me) wouldn't worth a lot.

My bike folds and performs fine with a wired one. Of course, it is just "heavier" since there is a wire. To compensate for that, I get a haircut before any long ride. :)

I use the extra Sturdy one from Cateye (see my site for details) i heard from everyone that Cateye is the bizz, the one i got is affordable, has am extra tough cable and casing (this can be very handy with a folder) and has all the basic functions.

@ v1nce,

Thanks for the advice. I might consider a wired cc afterall. It's much cheaper and probably does not get in the way when I want to (un)fold the bike.
I finally checked out your website and have to say, your bike looks smooth and I admire your sense of keeping 'old' valuable things in a great chape. One more question on the pedals you have on your Twenty: does the rubber prevent your feet from slipping of a bit (even without toe clips / power grips)?

Thanks.

On my BF I have the Cateye cordless 7, works really well for me.

@ Tomaso, thanks! Glad you like my site. I love my pedals, they are great value for money, neither too wide or small etc. However i had hoped that the rubber/pin combo would mean the pedals would have as much grip as some of the 'ShinBurger' BMX type pedals, that of course was hoping for too much. I'd say the grip is very good, when it rains it is good enough but i depends on the shoe. But it isn't really an issue at all since i have some PowerGrips which i still am going to mount.

CAUTION when putting a cordless cycle-computer on a 20" wheeled folding bike: The distance between the transmitter and computer is MUCH greater than on a conventional bike. You may experience lost signals, erratic readings and/or interference from anything - cell phones, other computers, overhead power lines.

YMMV depending on model.

I'm riding a VDO C08 and I've used a Filzer db4L. Both excellent.

I've got another question along these lines.

I have a Flight Deck harness on both my TREK road bike and Cannondale T2000 touring bikes. I move the head from bike to bike. I'm thinking of ordering a Bike Friday with Shimano 105's (Flight Deck compatible )and would like to use the head on that bike too.

Problem I see is when taking apart the split handle bars when shipping, one is going to have a "wiring problem" since several wires are attached to the shifters. Has any one ever cut the wires and installed quick connect electical connector to faciliate taking off and storing the handle bars during transport?

Thanks for any ideas!

YES. You can cut the wire and splice a disconnect in.
One of my rainy-day projects: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=134260

The cable on the VDO uses a single central conductor and the braided copper shield to carry the signal. I suspect others are similar.

af895,
Thanks so much for the detailed cyclometer instal job.
I love to see that others can be as obsessed with the details, especially when it involves a bicycle.
Thanks!
