Tell a little story (fib, lie, molding of the truth, etc) to get an extended amount of time for say a homework assignment or big test...

I.e. this weekend I was a little busy with a new job and some apple pie thing  and because of two tests I have this morning could not get the homework done for one of my classes. Now my options are...

1. Twist the truth a bit... oh I had a emergency "apple pie ride" and I will not be coming back until this evening (in time for my tests)

2. Call and reason for more time (rarely works)

3. Take a zero (could be 5 - 6% of my grade)

What would you do?

I would just tell the instructor that you were preoccupied studying for two tests and working, and ask if you can get partial credit for turning it in a little late. That shows the professor that you intend to do the work, and that you are not looking to be fully absolved.

btw - even if the professor says no partial credit, do it anyway and hand it in. It will show that you do take the class seriously.

No need to mention apple pie though.

I can't remember having been in this situation - asking the teacher for more time - I just always turned in what I had and took whatever grade I got.....but if I had, I'd probably go with #2.

My opinion is that one shouldn't lie, and should take responsibility for one's own choices.

i don't think there is an excuse that a teacher hasn't heard before....except...maybe an emergency "apple pie ride". haha.

Deaths in the family go up in a big way around final time. One of my profs used to say that the only excuse he'd accept was the students own recent death certificate. Harsh but it's one of those things that SO MANY people lie about that when something does happen the prof has to be skeptical.

i once got a final exam in university moved because i went to a concert :D

I gave the prof 3 months notice, never told him where i was going, i just asked him if i could write it early.

Yes, but this is just a homework assignment here, not an exam.

The comment was more of a branch-off....not a direct comment/advice on Mandy's post.

Would you tell yourself a lie?
