Bicycle Mechanics - Any preferences for a chain or rear cassette to go with Salsa chainrings?

Hi,
I wanted to try 26/39/50 on my Ultegra crank. My dealer had two, and the third is ordered. I know some rings go better with some chains. But I've never tried Salsa
before. You can chock this up to obsessive/compulsive behavior if you wish. I was just curious.

Well, the rear cassette certainly doesn't matter for "compatibility with chainrings" because the cassette and the chainrings never come in contact. You just need a chain that's compatible with both, and this depends mostly on how many cogs you have on your rear gear cluster - probably 9 or 10 speed, based on your having an Ultegra triple.

I'd stick with whatever chain is compatible with your rear sprockets. Salsa chainrings will work fine with whatever. There may be some slight diff in front shifting based on whether you have ramped/pinned rings, or rings without ramps and pins to aid shifting. But I don't think that getting a diff chain is going to make any difference in front shifting with either type of chainrings, and if the type of 9- or 10-speed chain did make a diff on the chainrings, it may be less compatible with the rear gears.

Definitely OCD in my book, unless you don't know that much about what you're talking about.

I've used Shimano for the last ten years, but that wouldn't work this time.

Sorry, I'd meant the last comment in humor. Should have put a ;) after it. I figured it was an honest question. Salsa chainrings with Shimano chain and cogs should be fine. You can use a 9-speed (or 10- or 8-speed) chain from Sram or whoever, too. I run a Sram on my good bike (http://www.unc.edu/~cupery/pics/bikes/IMG_1566--red_bike_side.jpg) with a Sram cassette (though I used to run a Shimano cassette) and a mix of FSA and Shimano chainrings.
