The link is to a photo gallery of images from the Tour de New Orleans this past weekend. Kenny Bellau organized the ride & plotted the route through the most devastated areas around New Orleans.

The ride started from the Audubon Park, went past the Superdome, down through the Central Business District and across the river. They even encountered a 'disaster tour' bus. Towards the end of the slide show (last three slides), there is what looks like a big warehouse. It's actually a river barge, carried there by the floodwaters. And yes, those are paved streets.

New Orleans is recovering, Mardi Gras is on, but there is still a lot to be done. I know the town will never be the same. The question is 'will the change be for the better, or worse?'

Uhg. Certainly wish I didn't have to create an account to see them. I was eatng at Port of Call when you guys rolled by. I was like, what the hell? hehehehe Pretty cool. Thanks for posting that. The city will hopefully be better. I hope so. But... as any resident here will tell you, we don't have a track record for doing things the right way.

I wish I would of known about this :( anyways, my best bike has spit a spoke, so I probialy couldnt of made it anyways :(

- i noticed some road bikes in the pics - were roadies having a problem during the ride? i would think a 'cross, hybrid, or mountain bike would have been a better bet for traversing the area?

I was a Voodoo Fest...was down there for about 4 weeks for the cleanup efforts (I'm active duty Coast Guard). I do believe that I saw you...I know I saw the chick eating the meat pie!!

Was there any serious sign of a clean up when you guys were there? And how many of you got flats from all the glass and rusted nails on the streets? I spent 3 weeks in New Orleans late last year and was amazed at how little seemed to have been done, once you get outside the unflooded bubble along the river. From the pictures it doesn't look as though much has changed.

The cars(all covered with what initially looks like heavy dust) that lined all the streets-neutral grounds-are mainly gone.The area on either side of St Claude(Rampart sorta becomes ST Claude) heading toward the industrial canal is being repopulated;there are fewer folks as you get closer to the canal of course.The area on the other side of the canal-lower 9th ward-has a few folks who have come back.Gentilly and lakeview have a fair amount of work going on-not many folks actually spending the night,of course.New Orleans East is still dead..
We had our 3rd murder of 2006 yesterday;normally-Pre Katrina- we would have about 25+ murders a month.Houston has had 23 murders they attribute to NO residents;we have had 9 murders since Katrina.
UNO reopened the campus today;1st classes held there since Aug 27th 2005,I guess.I have a class there this Friday( going back to school to get teacher's certification).All in all,NO is slowly coming back to life.
