Foo - People who use actual pics of themselves as avatars.....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Why? Clearly you're not being hunted by the FBI or anything so is it the best avatar that fits you? Is it hassle free because it's representative of your life philosophy? Is it because this is an insular community? Do you use your pics everywhere? Come on, I'm curious.

Why not? There's no harm in letting everyone know that I look just like a head of Napa cabbage.

How did you know the FBI is after me? AS long as they don't connect this bumper to my userid I'm Golden...

Because some of us feel that we have nothing to hide.

I've been like that a bit as well....actually, I've said plenty enough in the past that anyone with half a point of IQ could locate me within a mile of where I live.

My take...if they want to meet up with me for a ride sometime or just to chat it up, cool. As for bad things...oh well. I learned a while back that if you constantly worry about protecting yourself from "mean people", that you actually end up letting that worry imprison yourself....only worry about the big things, and set yourself free.

I was in the hospital after having my daughter when I got a phone call. Didn't recognize the voice and the person finally said, "You don't know who this is, do you?" I said I didn't and she said, " Oh, it's so and so from that site you visit." The site where I had never used my full name.....had mentioned the city (which has two major hospitals) in which I live....but pretty much nothing else beyond that I was pregnant, was expecting a girl and very near to giving birth. THAT person ought to work for the FBI. LOL

hehe, kinda why I said half an IQ point for me, since I spelled out my exact work commute, and my bike when combined with my riding attire is pretty unique (road bike, fully tricked out, and I'm riding in baggy jeans and t-shirts...right pant leg rolled up to just under the knee).

As for your bit...I bet you may have used your first name and posted an email address giving your last name during that time...pretty common. There's lots of ways to figure out who's who online.

What's really funny is when you just start talking to a random person, and about 15 mins later, recognize each other from a board you both go to.

I don't mind either. I think it's kind of fun to see what the people we've been talking with look like to see if they match up with the visual pictures built. I'm just not sure I'd ever do it. Don't get me wrong, I like me....it's just so out there.....you know what I mean? Once you put it out there it's like you can never pull it back in.

Yeah Lex, I hear ya on that one. Plus there are a ton of pics of me on this board you just have to search if your really are that interested.

I like my avatar someone here made it for me and it represents me pretty well. For right now I'm keeping mine.

You assume a lot. Those pictures could be of anyone. I still haven't figured out if Chipcom's is of himself or some slightly familiar celebrity doofus I can't quite place. I think he once posted a picture of himself that didn't match the avatar.

I put my picture in my avatar, but small enough that it is hardly recognizeable, since I thought a combination of patriotism, politics and a self-mocking Krusty reference would be a good mix.

Some of them (like Mandy and Mirona....sorry to use you as examples) are clearly them though because of the sheer number of pics they post. Also, Kaldar....really....who else could that be? :D

I couldnt agree more about chipcom, I have said 100 times to myself, "where do I know this guy from"? and just for the record.. even if it was me on the pic and not my brother, do you know what reducing your pic to 84 by 84 pixel will do to your face? I never knew I had such thin lips..well, I dont.. if you want to hunt me down and recognise me, Id advice you to squint a lot to match my face! but as I said before, this is really my brother;)

But is your boyfriend HOT? What about RICH? And he's clearly not SINGLE if he's dating someone (you)! So if you're looking for HOT, RICH, SINGLE, maybe you should post a pic. ;)

I use my own face because its easier to identify someone that way. The internet is a very anonymous and superficial place, I like to help make it more realistic. Plus I don't wan to insult, bore, confuse, or whatever else someone with a random other sort of avatar. People can identify me in a bike ride too.

I put my pic on thinking it wasnt a big deal, that's why I put it on.. Im not wanted by the FBi nor do I have anything to hide with my comments. Weirdos are going to be everywhere, I dont walk with a paper bag on my head when I come out of the house in case I encounter a weirdo. If they really want to track you down, I bet it's easier when you send an email and your IP adress shows up then trying to locate someone with a pic! I really didnt thought it was a big deal to put my pic on, but hey, what do i know Im the new girl here..if it offends anyone I will be glad to comform and take it off and find a south park caracter that matches me! :)

Maybe I should just say this because this seems to be a general conclusion.....I am not offended by people using their actual pictures in avatars. When I asked the question, I was looking at blog pages and it seemed most people had their own pics up. I would NEVER have thought to do that. I'm not wanted for anything and have nothing to hide....I'm just fascinated by the thinking behind things so I asked about this.

No complaints here.....seriously. It was a very innocent question.

I will say about Slvoid that I was surprised when I saw his pic because, though I know he's not the guy with the glove, I really kind of got used to a mental picture of him that very closely resembled that. :D

I've got a couple photos of myself up on my website, and my website is linked in my sig. Not sure if I'd ever get around to putting a pic of me in my avatar though, have about a million other images that are better suited for that space. Then again, maybe I will try to make one and stick it in there for a few days....

I just knew you'd have to mention me, Lex! Of course, I am the best looking poster on BF, right?;)

I didn't mind using my pic(an old one, at that) since it's not really what I look like now...unless I smile maniacally.:D Plus, it's totally bike-related. Thanks to *jack* for hookin' me up with that avatar. There are more current pics of me in the MTB forum, actually. I was dead-set against ever posting my pic online. I got over it.*shrug*

Here's my other avatar:

However, This is the exact image I want people here to think of when they're chitchatting with me. It's funny, stupid, completely irrelevant, sarcastic, misguided, and no more than 10,000 square pixels....just like me.
