MTB Boxx is 24 speed = seperate gear ratios.

Offroad?
Wild -what's with the front crankset? How is it to link and power the drive?

Jeff sadlly around here you will never get a answer that have to do with something as avangard as the G-boxx tandems..

over the years i collect a bunch of pictures on the topic Here is a gallery with the basic hub details and some bikes that use the hub on the rear wheel (http://patineto.smugmug.com/gallery/898528) but that is not all Here are some bikes, not only Nicolai's with G-boxx designs in a variaty of concepts and aproach (http://patineto.smugmug.com/gallery/840772)

I know for a fact that Karl Nicolai is considering to make a tandem frame base on their new and most improve G-boxx marvel like this.

this machines are a cutting adge as they come, nothing is even remotelly close in technology.

here is another gallery with the current Nicolai line (http://patineto.smugmug.com/gallery/434532/8) maybe that way you can get some ideas.

MTB Boxx is 24 speed = seperate gear ratios.as far as i know the gear boxes are 14 speeds not 24, but since is not gaps, cross overs or repeated gears like on a convensional drivetrain the 14 gears provide a progresive transition that i beleive is 6,75% form each other or a similar % but but one and the same , plus on a tandem that suffer so much from extreme gears, the internal hub provide the perfect shifting, specially if is located inside the frame on a suspension bike to keep the mass away from the swing arm

Offroad?
Wild -what's with the front crankset? How is it to link and power the drive?

the chain just goes on a angle until it reaches the G-boxx I don't know if they run two "Fix" sprockets or two ratchet ones like on the Davinci bikes...but i do beleive they are fix to keep the cranks in face.

I hope this helps to solve some of you questions.. sadlly is not really a forum anywere to really share this kind of advance thinking specially on tandem development.

Oh another thing the Nicolai G-boxx tandem will super expensive (at least at this stage) the red frame on the pictures is about 6500 euros, so i imagine the tandem will be even more expensive do to the added constrution require, I already order one of the single bikes, but i will need to wait for about 2 years since the demand is extremlly high..

to what end? I'm a fan of innovation, but what is to be gained by this design? I don't see it as an improvement, merely a variant on an old theme. Have I missed something?

Have I missed something?

Nope... Not a thing.

We thrashed the Nicolai G-Boxx tandem design around on the Double Forte off-road tandem enthusiast's forum a couple years back when it first showed up; it's truly innovative and impressive from an engineering perspective... much the same as the Rohloff hub that it incorporates. There have been a couple sightings of two different rigs here in the states but no impressive palmares that I'm aware of. Basically, it's an incredibly expensive thing that's very hard to justify using any value-based measurements for improved performance -- much like Santana's $13k Ti & Carbon Dual Moto F/S tandem, of which very few have ever been built since it's introduction at the '03 Interbike.

We have several friends / members of the DF forum who run the 14 spd Rohloff hubs on their Ventana off-road tandems... and they are having some teething pains. In general, they work well but require a slightly different technique with regard to shifting, general installation and integration with stock frames can be something of a custom fit job, and getting the rear wheel off past the tensioner and disc brakes at least on the Ventana demands some finesse.

Given that we have only had a few problems with chain suck, broken chains, or damaged rear derailleurs over the years on our conventional Shimano XTR & SRAM X.0 RD / cassette systems, the juice ain't worth the squeeze on the Rohloff for us, never mind the G-Boxx system.
