Foo - Good Will Hunting........Miss Misery

Well, I dont think this thread belongs here(but under foo it says off topic chit chat with no general subject) but I just finished watching Good Will Hunting, and wow that was a good movie. I particularly like robin williams, and Matt Damon, and Minnie Driver is a sight! Anyways, I really liked this movie, how bout ya'll?

Well, that movie came out almost 9 years ago. So, let me ask you: did you rent it or watch it on TV? If you watched it on TV, it's been severely (and horribly) edited for language. Both Matt Damon and Ben Affleck won Academy Awards for best screenplay for this movie, and the language and character interplay are both diminished when filtered for television.

If you saw the DVD, it is truly a great movie. Anytime it comes on (I've seen it dozens of times) I will always watch it.

It was a good story.....too bad it had an anchor (Ben Affleck) dragging it down from what it "could" have been.

Well I was 7 at the time, and my brother wanted to see it, and he was watching me. So I actually saw it in the movies. But I saw it on a movie channel so it wasnt edited.

I've seen it a few times in between then and now, but who can understand a movie like this at 7?

So as my mind progressed, I grew more appreciative for the movie, story,and meaning.

The movie actually got me hooked on Elliott Smith. He's good.

You must remember that Good Will Hunting came out at a time before Ben Affleck became Ben Afflicted and gave us the likes of Gigli and the period of time when he was to become the "next Mr. Ex- Jennifer Lopez."

His part as the best friend to the boy genius from Southie could have been played by no other. Given that the screenplay was written by Affleck and Damon you'll forgive me for saying that the role of Chuckie was tailor-made for Ben. The film was nothing less than spectacular. The cast could not have been better selected; even the long-hair yuppie scum who feels the fruitish rash is well played.

I suppose that I have become too attached to this film over the years. I once had a conversation, long before I saw this movie, with my best friend that was akin to the one Chuckie has with Will at the demolition site - where Chuckie talks about the better position Will is to find himself in because of his mental abilities. I am brought to tears when Ben delivers this speech; for I wished the same of my friend - at a time when he went from job to job that was not befitting him. But in my case I was the one that got up and moved with no notice; my friend tracked me down many months later and gave me the good news that he had finally applied, been accepted to, and enrolled in the university to which I myself had graduated from.

I see a lot of myself in Will and Chuckie. Also in Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, good looks and massive fortunes aside. The script, its writers and their success are things that dreams are made of. Two kids from South Boston, wanting to make a name for themselves do so by writing a film that is to be a vehicle for themselves, go on to win an Academy Award for their efforts. I am in awe. That they have not repeated this endeavor but have gone on to have their own respective acting careers where they have had highs and lows, cannot help me wonder what could be if they just got together again to write. Or if there ever will be since they wrote a story that was so personal that they may not ever write another script together.


As for Elliot Smith's song, it is befitting this film. To this day I sit and watch Will's car drive down the interstate to the tune and wonder what he'll do and say when he sees Skylar again. It is a shame that Mr. Smith is no longer with us...
