Need more details.

I'm sorry, but I've never heard of a bicycle called a Stratos. There are so many out there.

I have heard of a Stratos shock!

Do you have a link to the bike you're interested in?

Oh man I thought he was talking about the fork...More details like components and a link would help.

Rocky mountain stratos http://www.bikes.com/2003/stratos.html

It would be a great xc bike, probably not so good on the freeride side but you could get away with smaller stuff.

 Well considering I am canadian I should have remembered that bike. :)

Klein is dead on though. Good bike but is 90% xc.

That bike is a xc not freeride, look at the flow or grind for a freeride hardtail.

for anyone that hasnt figured it out yet i am talking about the Rocky Mountain Stratos Bike. tell me how the stratos is worse for freeride then the grind. I was told the stratos had better components and there wasnt a big difference in shocks, i like springs better anyway. I am gonna use this bike for allaround stuff but i am interested in getting a little air.

Flow has a more slack geometry better suited to freeriding. The top tupe slopes more so you have a greater standover height to protect precious dangly bits. The frame is burlier and built to handle drops more so than the xc frames. The chainstay I believe (at least on Kona bikes which are similar geometry) is shorter placing your butt further over the rear wheel making wheelie drops easier on that style bike.

Yes the components may be better on the stratos but the bike itself isn't as good. :) (I of course freeride and purchased a Kona Roast)

I test rode a 2002 Stratos. I wouldn't consider it a good, all around mnt bike, especially for freeriding. It has your typical cross-country geometry, with a pretty light wheelset. Freeride bikes usually have higher front ends and heavier wheelsets.

Personally, I liked the bike. I'm mainly a cross-country rider myself. But, if you want to do any hardcore freeriding, I wouldn't suggest it.

However, if I were looking for an all-around hardtail, I would maybe look at the Gary Fisher Big Sur. Same price, denser wheelset, higher front-end, nice frame, adjustable front fork (on the 2002 model, I'm not sure about the 2003). The bike has a longer-than-normal wheelbase, but it's part of the Genesis Geometry. I had a 2001 GF, and found that the Genesis thing worked great for me. I was able to haul butt on the uphills, and comfortably descend on the downhills. The Bontrager Superstocks took a beating and a half. In my opinion, the wheelset is as strong as you're going to get, before moving up to beefier rims. Hard to maneuver in tight singletrack, but every bike has it's pros and cons.

I will mostly be mountain biking and riding on the road(not competively just to get around i dont want a road bike) . How is the grind for all of that? how are the components if i am spending that much i dont want crapty stuff. I am not going harcore freeride but it looks like fun and i might wanna give it try(smaller stuff proabably) how would `the rockhopper fsr be?
