Foo - Mrs. King

I came in the office this morning and mentioned to the resident Good Ol' Boy down the hall that Mrs. King had died. GOB responded in all seriousness, "Well I'll be. I didn't know she was sick. Just how old was Priscilla anyway."

I just shook my head and went back to my office and closed the door.

I guess the story wasn't covered by Fox or Rush?

I think that she spoke here at my university last year, almost exactly one year ago. What an incredible legacy their family has left behind, and continues to create.

Martin Luther King was a great man and an incredibly powerful speaker. Too bad kids hardly know anything about him today. If people acted the way he envisioned, the world would be a much better place. I'm going to try to be the kind of person he envisioned and I hope you will too.

If someone had come up to me and said that about "Mrs. King", I wouldn't know who the hell you were talking about either, mayber Mrs. King, the wife of a coworker that I may or may not know, or one of another few thousand kings around here...

God bless Coretta Scott King! She was gracious and dignified and as firmly committed to civil rights as her husband. Somehow she managed to display no hatred or bitterness after she lost her husband to such a stupid and hateful murder. I hope she and Dr. King are having a happy reunion.

I hope that there will come a day where all people can live up to the principles the Kings envisioned for us. Unfortunately I do not believe I will live to see it....more's the pity.

This is, indeed a shame. However I wonder how many parents who utter the same litany even bother to teach their kids what the schools don't. Dr King was killed when I was 7 and even then I knew who he was. My parents made it their business to teach me. If I had to wait for the schools I would have had to wait til Jr High School, 5 years after the murder. Yes I am old ;)

I think we're stuck with a certain percentage who will remain hateful and ignorant. Painfully ironic considering that many of these profess to having faith. His (and her) message is always important and appropriate.

Is it really mind-boggling that someone wouldn't know who "Mrs. King" is? King is a fairly common name, y'know? Use her first name or her husband's name and I'd know exactly who you're talking about, but, for all I know, Chris King's wife could've passed away(if he's married, that is). I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't really have the time or inclination to take in every bit of information that is thrown at me today. This thread is the first I've heard of her death and it saddens me, but everyone dies. It's just part of life, really. I'd rather strive for the ideals they espoused than grieve overmuch for them, much less worry about the people who don't know/remember who they are.

When my daughters were in elementary school we took a weekend trip to Atlanta. I was pleasantly surprised when we drove past Ebenezer Baptist Church and my little blond-haired white bread kid got excited and wanted to know if that was MLK's church? She was about 10 then and was attending a Catholic school. She knew all about Dr. King and his work.

My older daughter teaches middle school English at an Episcopal school in a mostly white, affluent neighborhood. Every year she does a unit on King's "I have a dream" speech. It serves two purposes. It helps the students understand what makes an effective public address and it exposes the students to Dr. King's work for justice. Sometimes it doesn't take completely. One of her students wrote in a recent essay that King was killed by James Earl Gray.
