Professional Cycling - 1989 TdF Red and Combination Jerseys

hi guys, i have a set of 1989 tdf official jerseys, which besides the yellow, the green and the kom, also includes the red, for intermediate sprints, and the combination jersey. i would like to know who the red and the combination jerseys were awarded to in 1989. the official tdf site only lists results for the the yellow, green and kom. i've looked around a bit now, but i've found no source for info on the winners of the red and/or the combination jerseys - it's like they never existed. if somebody can point me to a source i would appreciate it. thanks, ray

According to the Kennedy Bros publication 'Tour 89', Sean Kelly won the red jersey and Steven Rooks won the combine jersey.

BTW, are you the same Ray Dobbins with the website with all the photos of classic bikes? If so, great website and great photos!

As I understand teh rules for the combo jersey it is determined by taking the placing of each rider in the three major jersey competitions and the rider with the lowest score wins the combo.

Rooks placed 7th 3rd and 3rd in the GC KOM and Points.

Gert-Jan Theunisse finished 4th, 5th and won the KOM.

This puts Theunisse in the combo. 10 to 13.

There is also a way that this mistake could happen. The reason for the original post is that information on this is hard to find. Someone may have started an error based on a photo. Rooks would have been in the combo jersey on the road the final day as Theunisse would have worn the higher ranked KOM Jersey.

I tried to find things on Theunisse. There were a couple of websites devoted to him, they did not include the combo in his palmares. But they also did not include the KOM which is far more important.

Unless I'm going blind and there are two very similar names in the 89 tour it looks like this one needs some more work.

I have spent SO much company time looking at those pictures. :) Each and everyone one of them are fantastic - both the bicycles and the photos.

Rooks' points total was 79 points or something (don't have the book in front of me), so they must use some unusual scoring format. Unfortuately 'Tour 89' only printed the combine winner, not the placegetters. I've got the annual printed by 'Winning' somewhere in the shed. If I get a chance and can find it I'll check. I'm also fairly sure they counted the Yellow, Green, spotted and Red jerseys towards the combo jersey

There maybe something to do with the rule regarding wearing only one jersey at a time. Like after stage 1, Dave Zabriske won the stage and earned the yellow and the green jerseries, but he could only wear one, so Lance Armstrong wore green for stage 2.

Ok. Found the Winning publication. Here are the top three for the combined jersey.

1. Rooks 89 pts
2. Kelly
3. Fignon

It looks like the winner of a jersey competition got 25 pts for first toward the combined jersey, 24 for second, down to 1 pt for 25th. As mentioned above Rooks was 7th overall, 3rd on points, 3rd in the mountains and 2nd in the hotspot sprints.

It makes sense if one includes the red. It also makes the award rather unbalanced. Good chance that contributed to killing the award.
