Phil Says Six More Weeks of Winter!
Phil's official forecast as read 2/2/06 at sunrise at Gobbler's Knob:
It is said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Around the country there are many imitators of me.
In Harrisburg there is Gus who appears on TV
working for the lottery.
Then all around town,
Cute groundhog statues abound.
They all look like me, I found.
Today on the Knob as I'm doing my job,
I don't like this likeness of me.
It's my shadow I see. Six more weeks of mild winter there will be.

Happy Groundhog Day everyone!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO....not winter! Phil has clearly not been here. First day of "Winter Fest" and it's 50F out. Happy day as we're usually sub-zero in January. Not a bad thing.

Hey, don't you be disn' Phil. He, like the Mummers on New Year's Day, is a Pennsylvania institution. Just like The Alamo is to Texas. :p

Institution indeed! That snaggletooth varmint is just as unreliable as you local tv forecaster with their predictions more than 3 days out.
Next year might be the year I go up to Punxatawney with one of those little carbide cannons (the ones that make a huge noise without firing a projectile). I'd set it off just as Phil is being pulled out of the hole. If that over-sized gopher doesn't die of a heart attack, he'll at least be psychically scarred and provide some real entertainment for a change.
Gus? I do all in my power to keep that poseur unemployed.

Google it - they're basically folks who want to think they live in New Orleans, but can't stand the stench of the swamp.

Sub zero in F? That is cold!
Careful...
Keep mentioning 'Gobbler's Knob' and 'Mummer' and this thread will surely be locked!

Growing up in Blair County, PA there was Blue Knob Ski Resort not far from my home.
<puts more wax on the ski bases> OK, that will be great too!! We have 110 to 140 inches of snow at the ski areas, always SOMETHING to do!
6 more weeks of winter??? We haven't even had a winter in Denver. Yes, yes our mountains have HUGH amounts of snow but Denver, we are dry as a bone. Either way that means I get to ride.

Shifty - I've had my fill of snow - spent the first 21 years of my life about 10 miles from Lake Ontario. I have matured and realize that cold weather and snow are the enemies of the middle-aged who want to stay fit. The concept is simple. Snow = bad. :D
I'll take my revenge on Phil today by going for a ride - on the bike I ran over a groundhog with last spring no less! :p

Take it from me, since I had a restraining order at age 8 where I wasn't allowed near that furball.
It's Phil, Phyllis is his mate. They keep him in a terrarium at the Punxsatawny public library in Punxsatawney PA....then they take him to Gobbler's Knob every year for the groundhog's day bit. I forgot exactly where Gobbler's knob was, but it was somewhere between where I lived at the time and the elementary school....library was very nearby.
FWIW, I got the restraining order because I used to drop firecrackers inside of his terrarium just to see him have a hissy fit and charge into the glass at me.

Dude, you're my hero!
Ah, yes...the good old days, when it was O.K. to be an 8 year-old with firecrackers!
