Commuting - Biking to the polls

Someone on the icebike mailing list suggested biking to the polls to vote. I plan on hitting the polls on my way home (have to go a bit out of my way, but the weather is great). I encourage others to also peddle in to vote. It will help send a positive message about this wonderul alternative form of transportation. Enjoy!

I rode to the polling place. Ironically I didn't vote on the local transportation measure because I didn't know much about it

I did my voting duty on my way in this morning, no surprise, I was the only one who arrived on a bike. Allot of people were interested though, I made many new friends in line.

I mentioned in another thread that I did ride my bike to the polls this AM. In fact, the polling place is only 100 yards from my back door. So, I had to rie around quite a bit to get my miles in before the polling place opened.

One more thing. I did remove my black balaclava prior to entering:lol:

The polling location was on my way to work so I stopped in. Ran into a person I knew from church that gave me a funny look (guess he didn't know I was biking these days). They even let me bring my bike into the Retirement Home while I voted. Very nice I must admit. A lot of people said hello to me as I walked through the halls in search of the place we were voting. They sure were a friendly bunch. Stuck my sticker on my helmet and rode the rest of the way into work.

We have all mail-in ballots here in Oregon, but I rode my bike to the Post Office, so I suppose that counts.

I've been voting on my way in to work for years; they all know me at the polling place (which is in a church) and I think they mostly enjoy the break from routine that the sight of a middle-aged greybeard in tights brings them. I remembered to wear my red bandana with my white jersey and blue fleece vest, so I could compare fashion notes with the lady wearing the rred, white, and blue necktie while we waited in line.

I would enjoy an election day morning warm enough for shorts, but that's probably never going to happen. :)

This year I did take my helmet off when I went in to vote, last election it was too cold. People always stare at the warning triangle on the back of my jacket, but it is usually the helmet lights that takes it over the top. We vote at the school just down the street, and on my way to work, I think I was only 10 minutes behind schedule when I left the school.

Yep, and garnered the best parking spot available, right outside the door!

The "I voted" sticker on my helmet from the last election was getting kind of weathered and due to be replaced.
