could someone simply cite a past thread addressing this? it is too bad the search doesn't recognize "numbers"...and appearently i am not typing the right "search" words.

I think it's been a while anyway since the issue's been brought up. If you're to the point where you're thinking of building your own wheels though, you should have a pretty good idea of what you're going to demand out of your equipment.

If you're going old school, or just mild 36's will last...we used to thrash GT Superlace 36's with no problems on ramps and flatland...a well build set of 36's will outlast a ****ty set of 48's.

i already have built wheels, but not 20"/bmx size wheels. i will probably just stick with a 3X because that is what i am more familiar with. i just want to make sure i have no regrets after shelling out over 500-600 hundred dollars on materials to build a wheel.

No functional reason to go anything other than 3x on 36h. I've been wanting to build one of these for my flatland bike (with a radial front) but money and time have been assigned to other projects (like the newly cracked rim on my LeMond, a Bianchi I'm building up into a rain bike and the recent acquisition of a Giant AC1 frame). :D

how would you calculate spoke length? the calculators i have seen didn't have an option for this pattern. or would it just be the same as a 3X ?

What I do if I need spokes cut at the bike shop, but they can't calcualte it for you. I call Danscomp and say you bought spokes, or something, and you need to know the length they need to be cup to with your rim/hub.

oh okay, i will use that as a fall back. sounds kind of like a pain....i like to do things myself. i have about 3 calculators i use to confirm they're all spitting out the same numbers. i am sure they are using the same formula, but i have found differences.

the Spoke Calcs i have been using don't seem to offer less common lace patterns so that is why i was wondering about calculating the previously mentioned pattern.

i am not near any dealers, so if i am off by 1mm or whatever and its not going to work, it means a trip to the freaking post office and another delay...

Same as 3x. Only when you get into wackier lacing patterns like crow's foot with varied spoke lengths does it get really sort of confusing. A couple mechanics at my shop way back in the day built a wheel...with the hub off-center. No two spokes are the same length, but the wheel is perfectly true laterally (obviously not vertically), dished properly and tensioned beautifully. Brain-boggling.

Im building 32 hole wheels with Chris King Hubs, smokes anything your thinking of building. Hands Down.

Aside from the fact that you could get a Profile Mini hub with 28 spokes that will be lighter and have a more durable hub, and it won't run you as much money, of course.

Unless you're buying CK with some kind of employee, pro or bro hookup, you're spending too much money. Even King pro froms are a pain in the ass to get, they have to be submitted between this silly narrow range of dates and there's a number of other ways they try to f*ck with you. Besides, that stupid ring drive noise makes my teeth itch. I'd rather deal with sloppy engagement than that damn sound.

hmm, I looked but I see like 12 different kinds of hubs they make, Beerman would you care to give me a link to the exact hub you claim to cost less and be lighter then a Chris King hubset?

do you build your own wheels?? are you still going to get Calvin Klein hubs?

FMFBMX
02-06-06, 12:53 PM
I don't have the ability to build a wheel to the point of being able to trust it. I have a proffesional do that. Especially with Chris King Hubs, not Calvin Klein. I will still get Chris King if I don't like the hubs beerman mentioned, but I have yet to see them.

Ahh, so you decide to title yourself as Beerman. Yes it appears you have an awesome "a life" as you would call it, possibly you ment a "Life"?

YOU LOSE!

GOOD DAY SIR

1) Using a copyrighted BMXBoard signature insult is against the law, if you're not a BMXBoardian.
2) You're nitpicking, and, in general, being a ******.

And, by the way, the correct order of that phrase is "you lose," followed by a "good day, sir." Maybe you should go back and take Willy Wonka 100W again at ****** University?

Yeah, so original that you attempted - and failed - at using my own phrase against me. On two occasions, if I may add; you did it in the thread about frames (that appears to have been deleted), too.

you're really not making much sense to me? i started this thread to gather a little info before i build a wheel set and you come on saying that you're going to build a better wheel set--hands down. come to find out, you don't even build your own

I own lots of products made my FMF. Not just BMX related.

Seems like you came here to argue, why would you ask if I even knew what FMFBMX stands for, if you already know then why ask, your here to learn you already know what it means dont you? Hmm. Seems likes you don't know what your here for.

Who are you to say I failed. Are you a teacher. No.

Considering the fact that you ued that phrase (incorrectly) to "own" me, when, in fact, your reply to me stating that I have "a life" (Oh no! I put the quotation mark in the wrong spot! Well f*ck me in the ass and call me Charlie!) outside of this website is some sort of a dig on me for using the nickname "Beerman". I could just as easily call you a "****** racer" (which, by all means, is probably correct) for having the nickname "FMFBMX".

I've only been out there once since I moved here like a week or two ago, but I met a couple guys out there, really chill vibe. Once I get over this plague I'll definitely be back.

How do you own alot of products by FMF, the only thing they make besides BMX parts are motocross pipes and silencers and if you own alot of FMF pipes and silencers you must be rich because (especially for four strokes) they are exspensive.
