Foo - Whatcha doin'?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Anyway, back to grant proposal writing... not too much left tonight, happily.
Good luck, Jason. Back to eating for me...

Yes, the latest database errors corrupted Mr. Napa. He'll be back eventually, but for now, another old avatar of mine is back. At least until the AVatar Ninja eats it again. AVatar Ninja sure likes Cervelos.
Hopefully the Avatar Ninja doesn't kidnap the Avatar Princess and take her to his castle deep within the Avatar Forests of Avaria.
 Yes, I hope AVatar Ninja doesn't kidnap Avatar Princess! Then who would I have ice cream with in Chicago?

I've been trying to explain all this to my 5 fishies who are still staring at me, but they don't really seem to understand. I don't know why either, I mean I've explained in great detail all the stuff going on here. Why do they keep staring at me?

They clearly aren't paying attention even though they're staring. You should have joined me for creme brulee (sounded better than ice cream) and beer instead. :)

Waxing my bike.
Going to try to ride my mountain bike tomorrow with a guy. The only reason I'm using the Caldera is because he is using a hardtail. I didn't want to ride the road bike, look back and wonder where he is.
ANYWAY
I went and picked it up and I was amazed at how heavy it was. I have to admit that since I got the road bike I haven't ridden either of them. The only ones I ride lately are the skinny tire bike and the medium tire bike.
Ugh.. I've got to go over the entire bike. Just for safe measure.
Wouldn't it be easier to just shave the bike?
OK, I'll shut up now.

Morning Foo!
Brisk 34F and NO WIND! (yet). I'm fixin to go load my bike & stuff on/in the car and head out to my ride.
Hmmm, contemplating how to get out tomorrow for a longer ride....I have to be able to keep up with BikeWNC, Jschen, CM, and others on this Dec. mtn trip!
Later -
I'm sitting here wondering if I made the right decision to ride in the afternoon. I was planning a morning ride but it looked like rain... Oh, well, 50 miles is a nice afternoon ride. Maybe tomorrow I'll do a longer one in the morning.

Working on one of my bikes. It's an old lugged steel mountain bike frame that I'm working on turning into an around town running errands type of bike. Rack, grocery bag pannier, fenders and all. :)

Just checked the tire pressure in the cars. Now I'm getting ready to go ride. Sun is finally breaking through the clouds and it is starting to warm. Should be near 60F today though we will be long done with our ride before it gets there.

I had a dream that I was to stay with some BF'er on Dec 26 before riding with BikeWNC and others on Dec 27-29. And in this dream, I happened to stay around and on Dec 29, I realized that I had forgotten all about the riding on Dec 27 and 28 and it was supposed to be the last day I was riding in the western NC mountains, yet I had no clue how to find the others because I had neglected to get any contact information. And this guy evidently lived 16 miles away from BikeWNC, but with recent road closures, was several hours away. So I gave up on riding during my vacation, and Vivian stayed packed in her case.
Happily, it's just a dream. Whew.

My ride today didn't work out as planned. My wife couldn't go because my mother-in-law was sick so that changed things. When I finally got to ride I got a flat, first one in over 6 months, in the first mile. A simple stone bruise flat on a worn tire. I replaced the tube but decided it was best to turnaround to the car. I just didn't want to be out in the middle of nowhere without a spare tube and only one CO2 cartridge. So I'll replace the tire and try again tomorrow.
Good afternoon Foo.
I'm cleaning the house. Oh goodie... After that, I have to write a 5-7 page paper for my Social Psychology on conformity and how its present during social greek organization hazing. It's definitely going to be a fun Saturday evening.

Hey Foo!
I'm back from my ride, (well got back around 2:30). Lemme say this - making sure you eat something the night before, eat a good breakfast, eat 2gels/hr (3total), 2 bottles of Cytomax & 1 of water will ensure one to have a really great ride!!! Woo-Hoo:D. Damn. Finally. I had a decent ride. 41.2mi/2:32hr ride time, 1500'+/- climbing. I did get some cramps towards the end, but they weren't too bad. I'm thinking about going out in the morning and doing another ride too!
Where's the "happy-dance" emoticon?? Here, this will work -  :)

Normalized watts is a weighted average which better defines the total effort when periods of zero watts (coasting) are involved. 20 min ave is just that, the ave watts over that period. Max watts is an instantaneous peak.
Edit. The 20 minute ave is the highest 20 minutes for the ride. Obviously there could be many 20 minute periods but the software picks the period with highest ave watts.

yea, and i have no idea what my numbers mean:rolleyes:. most likely the meaning is "you suck" which is what the PT really tells me:D. oh well, guess i'll figure it out eventually.

Right now just note in the file how the ride felt. RPE for the ride. Was it hard? Easy? Are you very tired after? Etc.

Normalized to what, though? Normalization implies that a value is recalculated relative to some reference point.
And which 20-minute period is chosen by the PT over a ride longer than 20 minutes?
Guess I could Google for the answers, but it takes too long on dialup when others on this forum likely have the answers at hand. :)

WP, look in the Training with Power book and get the definition of Normalized Power. The 20 min selected is the period of 20 consecutive minutes with the highest average power.
I find it interesting that the 20 min ave is less than the Normalized power for the whole ride. I don't think I ever see that in my files. You must have drafted a lot and had some short hard efforts.

If I understood it correctly, it recalculates the average power based on the time power was put through the cranks. Coasting time is removed.
And which 20-minute period is chosen by the PT over a ride longer than 20 minutes?
The 20-minute period with the highest average power. My guess is the software examines every 20-minute segment of the PT raw data, perhaps in one-second intervals, and calculates average power for each segment, then picks the highest one.

Normalized power is actually an estimation of the power you could have sustained for the effort put out during the ride. A better explanation can be had in the link above.

Yeah, I saw that after I posted.
But even though the method is more sophisticated than that, the end result is something similar.

OK - per the book:
"We calculate NP by (1) starting at 30s into the wattage data and calculating a 30s rolling avg for power; (2) raising the values obtained in 1 to the 4th power; (3) taking the avg of all the values from 2; and (4) taking the 4th root of the number obtained in 3. Basically, it's an estimate of the wattage you would have avg'd if you had pedaled smoothly for the entire effort - the power your body "thinks" it is doing. It's an estimate of the power that you could have maintained for teh same physiological "cost" if your power output had been perfectly constant (like on stationary bike) rather than variable." NP is a means of accounting for the variability in power during a ride.
It was a big group and the first 20 miles was in a paceline where I only had to take one pull the whole time. The last half of the ride was more windy and the "hammers" went on, leaving 6 of us to finish hte ride, which was ok. I did a lot more pulling on this part or thinking I was pulling and I'd look back and no one was on my wheel:rolleyes:
CdCf - data is collected every second.

ok, well nevermind my post...easier to see in the linky.
I hope you aren't using the instructions in that book. That's a track hub in the diagram, and track wheels use a reverse-underhand spoking technique not used in most other kinds of wheels.;)
Ok so now I'm about to lace a track hub with a NOS Sun M17A Tubular rim.
Help! I'm still not clear on this "reverse-underhand spoking technique"

I think I will do something similar. Since I only use the fixie on the track tubulars would be fine. It would be a good way for me to get used to tubulars without having to worry about spares etc. out on the road. I'll start looking for some track hubs and rims.
