I might be heading to Florida soon. My dad just got out of the hospital and has regressed in his abilities. My mom is overwhelmed. :(
Sorry to hear that, SB. :o ((hugs)) What's goin' on with your dad, if I may ask?
Hi, Foo. Just got back from the visitation. I got there at 7:15pm, and did not leave 'til 8:30pm! In the interim, except for the minute I spent talking with my former colleague, I was in a looooooong serpentine line of humanity. There must have been over 300 people in front of me, and at least that many behind me.
My friend's late wife was a real mover/shaker in the community, yet, one of those humble workers whose works are not widely known until death. Tonight was a truly beautiful testament to a life which touched many, from all walks of life. I know her husband is grateful to see the love. I also know that he's probably still there right now, tryin' to hold it together, deeply touched by this outpouring of support and love. He will be one tired puppy when he gets home. This I know. And then there is the funeral tomorrow. :o
Just checkin' in for a few minutes myself here, as I sip some B&B. That was the first time I'd been back to that funeral home for a service since my late husband's. A bit emotional, but not in the way I expected. I felt good being there, and I know that seeing me, knowing what I've been through, meant something to my friend. :)

I just fixed my friends step dad's 60+ year old .25 auto. I had to fabricate a new hammer reset spring for it. Simplest repeating pistol I've ever handled.

Be strong as well as brave. A little over 2 years ago, Dad ended his mortal toil after a series of small strokes left him unable to do anything, and his GI tract shut down. It was a difficult and helpless feeling, but we knew his wishes, and our faith helped out a lot too. Not wishing anything bad on your family. There is always hope - but it shifts to a different kind as a loved one passes through the veil into eternity.
I pray all goes well, and hope you can help both your mom and dad .

Mornin', Foo! :) <sippin coffee>
Can't linger here today. The funeral is at 10am, and, if last night's visitation is any indication, it will be SRO in the cathedral. I need to get out the door in about 20 minutes! :eek: And it's only about 25 minutes away!
I don't feel all that well today. Maybe the cold is still present, or maybe a new one is breaking out. :(

Morning Foo!
Sitting at my desk at home, sipping coffee and trying to figure out what I'm doing today. I want to go for a ride....but I have to wait for the cable guy who never showed up last weekend. So...he's suppose to be here after 1:00 today. He better show up or else!
So...I'm gonna do the trainer again tonight....may try to hit the Silver Comet tomorrow....Somewhere in all this I need to take my bike to the shop...the BB is making a noise and has developed some play in it....On top of that I plan to convert from a triple to a compact and upgrade from veloce to centaur. So, maybe I'll drop it off at the shop tomorrow.

Bikes are all lubed, gear packed and we're getting ready to get out for a little ride this morning. The temps are warming and should be ok by the time we begin to ride. I took the windex to my wife's polished Ti bike this morning and it is once again a brilliant, blingy, bike with blue trim. I'll try to get a pic or two while out on the ride.
Just finished writing about my time in Charlotte up to the end of Dec 30. This is tiring. There's still three bike rides (out in the suburbs with VV, polara, and Eboo, through UNCC with VV, and on rollers in the early hours of 2008) to write about. And a dinner to write about. And pictures to add to the report.

I fear that we are at the beginning of that particular journey. :( It doesn't help that they live the "snowbird" lifestyle, living in Florida Oct-May and PA during the summer.
My dad had a pretty bad case of lung cancer about a decade ago. The surgeons kept cutting into the lung but never worked "out of the margin" and felt they had to stop. They followed up with aggressive chemo and radiation therapy.
A short time later (within two years, I think), a new growth was found on his brain. I think they were able to cut this out in it's entirety, but followed up with radiation. After this operation, his mobility was reduced significantly. Since then, he has had bouts with seizures, side-effects from seizure meds, delirium from infections/fevers and his mobility during these setbacks is further reduced.
This latest adventure to the hospital was another major seizure. My mom suspects a stroke as he is somewhat confused and has now become combative.
Thanks for the kind words. :)

SB, so sorry to hear that. PM anytime. :o ((hugs))
I'm back from the funeral, and, though not SRO, the cathedral was certainly full. A most beautiful service on a most beautiful day. My heart hurts for my friend. Fifteen months ago, that was me standing there, bearing up under the great show of love and support from family, friends, and community. I hope I can support him well on his own journey of healing....
And now, it's time to eat something. <slinkin' off to kitchen>
Sweet, precious electricity! I bathe in thy warm glow!
The power went out here at the house at about 10am yesterday, and didn't come back on until about two in the morning. Yeesh.
I suppose I can't complain too much, though, as it could have been worse:

I heard a levee broke in Nevada, causing a lot of homes to be flooded. Anyone know if any of our BF/Foo'ers have been affected?
Glad to hear you have power again!The longest I can remember it being out before was maybe three or four hours. This was sixteen-ish.
I strapped a headlight onto a bike and went for a ride at about 10 last night. It was pretty surreal. So very dark. For the most part, the stars and my headlight were the only lights around, and the hum of the tires was the only sound to be heard.
The only thing that lessened the enjoyability factor was that there was a lot of debris large enough to strongly disagree with allowing a wet 23c tire to roll over. Other than that, it was very pleasant.

ok...there's a sattelite dish on my house now and 2 guys drilling holes in the walls.
I'm trying to keep an eye on everything.....I'll have 140+ channels of stuff to watch shortly.
I'm guessing it will be 140+ channels of stuff I really don't care much about, but the wife and kid wanted cable/satelite...so I got it.
I like the dish over having cable. We do find that sever storms will interfere with reception a bit, but when we had cable they would take it out for a day at a time.
Just think, you'll get the Food Network and can hate Rachel Ray with the rest of us. :)

hiya foo!
well, i did ride today...25F when i left my car at 9:15am for teh 8mi ride to wendell to do the 39mi ride. all the 51mi people bailed to the 39mi route. that's ok, just meant taht i would have to ride a little bit more on the return trip.
wow. what a difference that Ring of Fire ride made to the riding here!! last time i rode this route, i got dropped on every damn "hill" (they will now be known as just grades). but, this time, i attacked them and was not last up them. even stood out of the saddle on the majority of them. wind was a bit bad after our rest stop too.
when i left the group to head back to my car, i had about 12mi to ride in order to get a metric century in today. i did accomplish this! but, when i got to my car, i had right at 60mi so i had to go ride a bit more to get the mileage in .
for bwnc:
NP=159
AP=124
work=1814kJ
distance=63.4mi
ride time=4:09
elevation chg=~2000'
now, if the 'taters would just hurry up and bake, i could eat my tuna steak & salad. i'm damn starving! and i'm having an Old Scratch too and listening to some LZ.
Went for a ride which consisted of the following:
1) Across Neighborhood
2) Down one street
3) Left Turn, Through one signal
4) Hear the noise of a coming blowout
5) Stop just in time for that blowout
6) Change tire, scratch new brooks saddle in process
7) Nearly have a second blow out from tire coming off rim during inflation
8) Get about 20psi in tire from left over of CO2 cartridge
9) Walk 3 blocks to LBS
10) Buy new tire, limp home.
This is what was parked outside the shop when I got there:

I live in Reno, work in Carson City. It started snowing around 4:45 yesterday afternoon (after 2 inches of rain). By 6:00 when I got off work there was already 3-4 inches on the ground. The drive home (40 miles) took 1 1/2 hours. Coming through Washoe Valley it was blizzard conditions. Could barely see 15 feet in front of me. Anyway, we got about 6 inches here in Sparks, about a foot in the higher neighborhoods in Reno. There was a break for most of today, but it started again about 20 minutes ago and is coming down hard.
As of 6:00 am Boreal and Squaw were reporting 4 feet and Kirkwood was claiming close to 6.
Here's how my bike spent most of the time on the ride:

Just wondering why you live 40 miles away from where you work? Is Reno that much better than Carson City?

Sadly, the differing seat heights indicate that this isn't the case.

I can't imagine how fast that bike would be on the flat. I noticed the rim brakes. A bit optimistic I would think. I hope that is a disc in the rear but I can't tell for sure.
I'd think that with a bike like that, disc brakes, front and rear, would be mandatory.
That's a rim brake on the back, too. Some kind of weird hubular thing going on, though.
In any case, the thing is fitted with platform pedals and 26" wheels. A speed machine it's not.
****load of S&S couplers, though. A pricey machine it is.
I lived in Reno before I got the job in CC. I live with my gf and she works here, so we aren't moving any time soon. We may eventually move to the south end of town, which would cut 15 miles or so off my trip (we live in the NE).
Reno is much bigger. CC has about 60,000 and Reno/Sparks is more like 250,000. There's a lot more stuff here and far more to do. And much better bike shops.

why is it that when i come home from a ride like i did today, that i'm not very tired but now, at 6pm i'm really tired?
I dunno... I generally am tired right away. Maybe you were still feeling the euphoria of completing the ride. Maybe you were simply too hungry to notice being tired.

We're just winding up things at the shop and it was a very busy Saturday afternoon... I barely had time to get my own bike cleaned up.
I think it's the unusually warm weather that has inspired a few more folks to get out and ride.
