Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

JSC, if you go the salvage route, I could use the side view mirrors (both of them), since mine are being held on by duct tape right now. Damn Ford for not making them w/ hinges so I can swing them out of the way of overzealous garbage truck drivers with poor spatial abilities!
My coworker wants to make the airport run at 4 PM, so I have to plan to finish at 3:30 since lab work isn't always very predictable. Only 5 hours to go, including a lunch break. :)

I saw DJ Tiesto on one of your windows. He's usually pretty good. If that's the Gay Station, it might be trance or ambient that's playing now.
Tiesto was on the Dance channel, but yeah this is trancish / ambient. It's actually got more listenable music then the Dance station. I'm actually a bit surpised. And Yeah Tiesto usually has some decent stuff though I prefer other artists. I have a friend who is a big, big Tiesto fan. He probably has some 13gb of his stuff :roflmao:
jyossarian, if I end up trying to salvage parts, the mirrors are yours. (They're power mirrors, but if you don't have power mirrors, I suppose you could just not hook up the motors to anything.) I don't think it's likely, though, as I have nowhere to deal with the car as I strip it for parts. If the car were in the Los Angeles area, I'd probably consider it.
Sorry if it seems as if I'm into your business, I'm just trying to help out, okay? :o
I really do appreciate it. Just being terse since I'm trying to get work done at the same time.
We wine and dine (okay, beer/margarita and fajita) them on Thursday night (grad students only), wine (usually pretty good wine, at that) and dine them on Friday night (grad students, post-docs, and faculty present), and hold a party (kegs and all) for them Saturday night (grad students only). All paid for by the graduate program in hopes of atttracting the prospective students.
By the way, this is typical of top schools, though usually not quite as drawn out an affair as at Scripps. So peregrine, when it comes time to apply, make sure to apply to a decent list of schools so that you can fly around the country and party at their expense. ;) It's not unusual for people to apply to perhaps a dozen places and visit perhaps half a dozen of them in this fashion.

heh. wish i was smart enough to get into college and do that.
I'm stuck between going from my virtual pc and browsing or responding to IMS cause every time the virutal pc loses focus it loses cpu affiniity and takes forever to do anything and usually updates or installations will fail because of this. :(
You can turn VPC's willingness to hog processor cycles up if you need it to keep operating well in the background. (You may have already done so.) On VPC for Mac, I have the background CPU usage turned all the way up. Doesn't matter when the virtual machine is sitting idle, and I've successfully run installations and updates with VPC running in the background this way.
Just come visit on a Friday/Saturday some future recruiting season when I'm still in grad school. I can sneak you in, and no one would know the difference since there's plenty of people who choose to not talk about science at these gatherings.

welll bugger me
I had gone looking for those options but i was thinking it would be a per PC setting. I didnt even think of looking inthe options options thing. I wonder if that setting has always been there and I just noticed it now or if its new to VPC 2004.
Sweeet. it works.
man I wish i would have known about this earlier
I got back from a half day at school 30 minutes ago:D
Whew earlier today was bad.. i left one of the two chemistry sheets for homework at home and a spanish sheet we needed also. Oh well Im going to Arlington today so im in the process of getting ready:P

It has been there in some form ever since I first ran across a beta version of VPC 1.0 for Mac back in 1995 or so. The controls are a bit finer-grained now, but work essentially the same way. I assume with VPC for Windows being a much later product, it's always been there in the Windows versions, too.
EJ? (big brother tone of voice) Listen to Siu. Go read! :p

Hey, at least you're smart and running VPC on a PC. I'm stuck running it on a Mac. Need to translate Intel code to PPC code, and with the PPC G5 only running in big endian mode, it's quite a translation. (Previous PPC chips could be forced into little endian mode, which made the translation a bit smoother.) And we don't get graphics card support, so my processor also has to emulate the graphics card on the side.
Once there's a decent virtual PC program (VPC or otherwise) proven to work in a stable fashion on the new Intel Macs and certain key programs like MS Office are redone to run natively on the Intel Macs, I'll probably be making the switch to an Intel Mac. With a much smaller emulation penalty, I could then run MacOS, Windows, and anything else I desire side by side with all operating systems running at essentially native speed.

I remember there was a big bugabo when the G5 chip came out about how VPC wouldn't run on it. Did they finally come out with a version that does run on it then?
VPC 6 wouldn't run on the G5 because of the endian issue. (Aside from not being able to be forced into little endian mode, a G5 can run any G4 code. Since the G5 is a fully 64-bit processor, the converse is not true.) VPC 7 works fine. It came out a few months after the G5 computers. The other main stated feature goal for VPC 7, native graphics card support, didn't make the cut, though. :( Thanks to the G5's much enhanced capabilities, it runs VPC quite a bit faster than a G4 does despite having to deal with the endian issue. Thanks to its very high power usage, it also meant a lack of meaningful performance evolution for Apple laptops in the last two years, which is why I'm lugging around an iMac G5 instead of a PowerBook.

Yup, we're very excited about that ongoing expansion. My work won't have me doing anything with that site, except perhaps as a long-distance TA if my professor ever has me be a TA again. (With so little teaching at our institute, I doubt it since other people need the chance to get some teaching experience in, too.)

anyway class is over in about 3 minutes, off to shop class!
Finishing up lunch.
An internal e-mail from the company I consult for that came in a little while ago: "Because of the short month we are postponing ice cream until next week. We'll be back on track to the end of the month in March." They have monthly ice cream now? Man, I'm working in the wrong place. Lunch on Friday. Wednesday night is movie night (with food) for those who have nothing better to do. Accomplishments are routinely celebrated with champagne. Except recently, milestones related to closing a major deal were celebrated with a bunch of scotch.
I sometimes think I should try to bill them for some champagne and scotch when they hold those celebrations. Why should I be left out just because I'm on the wrong coast? Of course, the CEO would probably just reiterate his suggestion that I quit school and work with them. Not a great long-term move for me, though, seeing as I'm not exactly hoping to spend my career in the software industry.

Yeah, I've been doing this for too long.
If i had the money I'd go to college or if I could i think i'd try to get into something related to construction. I thought about becoming a personal trainer but that seems to be one of those things where one really needs a good mentor.

What I'm doing right now is wondering why did I come to work so early since there's hardly anything to do lab-wise, when all I wonted to do this morning was sleep some more  I'm also wondering just how behind am I as regards to computers since I don't understand half of what jschen and TexasGuy are posting about :(
So why not just run off to the library to "read" and nap a bit?

Don't worry... we were just discussing esoteric details of certain Intel and PowerPC processors. Intel chips use "little endian" bit ordering, meaning that the least significant bits (0's and 1's) come first. PowerPC chips by default use "big endian" bit ordering, meaning that the most significant bits come first. However, most PowerPC chips (aside from the PowerPC 950, aka the G5) can be forced to run in little endian mode when it's convenient to do so. One of the few times it's actually useful to do so is when trying to emulate an Intel PC since running in little endian mode (the mode Intel chips run in) means not having to swap the order of bits over and over and over in translation back and forth between the Intel and PowerPC bit ordering.
Yes, I am a geek. :p What did you expect?
Taking a short break and enjoying a soda. I have about 10 minutes' worth of lab work left to do, and 50 minutes to do it. Then the oh so hard work of entertaining prospective graduate students starts. :)

A correction first: It's an arrangement of bytes (8 bits), not bits, that varies in the two systems.
Consider an example in base 10 computing instead of base 256 (an 8-bit byte) (just to make it easier to relate to the day-to-day). We in our daily language use big endian mode. 325 means 3*10^2 + 2*10 + 5. However, that's simply a matter of convention. We could just as easily (with some training) go around representing numbers in little endian mode, where the same number would be written 523, ie 5 + 2*10 + 3*10^2. You can readily see that two people discussing the same math problem, but one speaking in one mode and another speaking in another mode, would spend quite a bit of time needlessly translating back and forth if they can't manage to agree on one mode or the other.
hey jschen do you think you might ever become a chemistry teacher or math one?

EJ123, I don't know. I can imagine becoming a chemistry professor. (Probably not a math teacher, though I'd be capable of becoming a math teacher at a pre-college level.) I'm also considering some other career possibilities that at this point I'm not going to divulge.
