I cheated. I used frozen veggies and ready made pie crusts. But yeah, I'm up for adoption. ;)
Adoption is such a big committment. Can I just borrow you for a while? :D
Liz, you just had to mention his dinner again. I didn't eat lunch, so I'm pretty hungry by this point. :(
jyo, Liz may be commitment-adverse, but I'll adopt you. ;) Or maybe Liz and I should just buy you some vacuum packing equipment and send you food and shipping money, and then you can just cook for all of us.
Man, all this talk is making me hungry. Maybe I should grab a snack...

Sounds like a good idea. Just don't ask where the food comes from. Or ask for a health certificate. Or pics of my kitchen. ;)

You really think that Jyo will fit into a vaccum bag? I wonder how much the postage would be????! :p
Okay, I'm eating a big cookie now, so I can think about food again without my stomach hurting. jyo, I'm sure your kitchen looks better than many Chinese restaurants' kitchens.
When I had graduated from college, my best friend and his then girlfriend (now wife) offered to just have me eat over every night. With his wife being a superb cook (and currently earning a master's degree in food science just for fun), it was very tempting. I did eat over about once or twice a week, but not every night. I decided I wanted to have more control over what I ate.
My best friend and I did eat over at her place every night one summer back before they were dating. We were very well fed. :) And my best friend is a pretty good cook, too. In their household, day to day, he does most of the cooking. She now only likes to cook on special occasions and the rest of the time, prefers to simply tell him what she wants to eat.
Most memorable was my going-away gathering at their place with lots of very good food. Basically, she went down the list of all my favorite foods and prepared as many as possible from scratch. Things like lamb chops, steak, sushi, various seafood dishes (including importantly sea bass), creme brulee, tiramisu, fruit sorbets.

Well, I guess if you're gonna be the 'son' I'm gonna have to adopt you both, eh? Yikes, I'm gonna need a new job!!! And a van! :p :p
BTW, have you people noticed that it says "1999-2005 BikeForums.net" on the bottom of the page? Is that gonna change to 2006 or is it just a formality?
^^^The beauty of adopting people who make money is that it can actually help your finances instead of hurting your finances. As for the date change, maybe you should ask Joe Gardner about it. :p
My upper body has been unusually stiff and sore recently due to my not riding enough (and thus not stretching enough). Yes, I do commute (not today because of a big winter storm earlier in the day), but my riding position isn't as aggressive on my commuter. Right now, the left lower back side of my neck is particularly stiff and sore.

Usually a formality. Most companies don't ever update it. :p I've seen stuff that ended in the 90's and early 00's :p Heck Windows XP says its copyrighted till 2002/3 i think :p I don't reboot very often so I dont recall I do know that during the beta for SP2 we griped at Microsoft for not updating that :roflmao:

PIlATES?
If I'm not riding I'm almost alwyas doing something on my bowflex or doing my crunches. If i had a TV with dvd player i might try seeing if any of that Pilates stuff could give me a decent workout.

Oooh, Oooh I wanna be adopted, I wanna be adopted. PICK ME PICK ME!
Looks like peregrine should just adopt all of us. Don't worry about the minivan, peregrine. We seem to all have cars. But you might need to buy a pretty big house.
As for TG's suggestion of Pilates or other exercise, the problem is, at this point, I'm still just a couch potato whenever I'm not cycling. Picked up cycling in July, and before that, I was a full-time couch potato.
Back on topic... I just did my consulting work for the day. And in my research team today, we solved a little problem in the lab that was causing my labmate fits since it seemed like it shouldn't have been a problem in the first place. Happily, logical reasoning gave us a pretty simple yet highly elegant solution to our problem.

Back on topic - I'm admiring my new IRO Rob Roy. :D It's a fixed gear cyclocross bike.
It was delivered today and it took about 45 mins. to put together and 1 hr. to adjust the brakes cuz I'm such a shmuck. It's also my first experience w/ presta valves so that took another 15 mins. to figure out when I was pumping the tires and nothing happened.
I took it for a spin in Central Park and it rode smooth, fast and quiet. Of course, it's fixed so the couple times I tried to coast I almost got tossed off the saddle. At the same time, if I need to slow down or stop, I just apply backpressure. But if I need to stop fast, then I have to hit the brakes. Climbing hills wasn't as tough as on my rigid mtb which was a surprise. Descending hills I could easily spin out, but I can also control my speed w/ a little backpressure. All I can say is learning to ride this bike is gonna be fun.

Fixed gear aint too hard if you get used to it :p I think with fixed gear you actually have like 2 gears dont you? which would be like a medium and a large? Most of my time on my Mongoose XR 100 was all done in 3rd and 7th with a few trips to 3rd and 6th or 3rd and 5th, which isn't much of a change but sometimes on a few Texas rolling hills it was a necessity. You just learn to be a masher as opposed to a spinner or somewhere in between.

From my vast 45 mins. of riding fixed, a few things stand out as things I need to re-learn.
1. Starting from a standstill. I need to get my other foot on the pedal right away since I can't coast. Nothing like the feeling as I'm trying to coast and the pedal comes back up w/ my foot on it and lifts me up!
2. Can't coast. When I try to coast I almost get tossed off the bike. See above.
3. Yup, I have two gears. A 46/17 and a 46/18. If I want to switch, I have to take the wheel off and flip it around. Otherwise, I have just the one gear (46/17) and I can't stop pedaling.
4. It's freaking fun. You definitely have to stay alert and on your toes and anticipate lights, traffic and peds better.

You can pick any place as long as it's NYC, Hawaii or the Napa valley. The mediterranean will also do.
Just got back from playing some indoor soccer. Pretty sad...that's the first real excercise I've gotten in weeks. Oh well, I get my bike back for the spring starting this weekend and I'm starting my triathalon P.E. class, so I should be getting plenty of excercise now. Three more days till Spring Break!
Checking in and checking out...
Good night!
:)
Resting a bit before prepping both my bikes. One for hopefully getting out for a pre-breakfast ride. (If so, it will be my first ride of over three miles in two weeks!) One for commuting.
I managed to break the key to my dad's Lexus. Stuck it in the ignition, turned, and the car started, but the key also broke into four pieces. (1) The metallic part that goes into the ignition, with a tiny bit of plastic still attached. (2) The top plastic portion of the big part of the key. (3) The bottom plastic portion of the big part of the key. (4) The electronics portion housed in between, ie the transmitter with the buttons for unlock and lock.
Oh well, whatever... it's just a key.

Yeah. Lay off the caffeine or the Superman pills or something.
I guess I don't know my own strength. :D I had borrowed my dad's Lexus SC430 for three months once. Didn't have problems with the key back then. My sister had just special ordered her BMW 325i, but she needed a car right away. So she took my Ford Focus. That left me without a car, so my dad loaned me his Lexus. (Our old Infiniti Q45 wasn't retired yet, so my dad had a spare car.) Ten weeks later, the BMW arrived, and my sister happened to be in town, so she went to pick it up, but for reasons unclear to me, she decided to keep driving my Focus. My dad didn't want the BMW, and I don't particularly care for his Lexus, so a few weekends later, I went home to return the Lexus and borrow my sister's BMW (with all of 100 miles on it). Being a good older brother, I let my sister keep my Focus for as long as she wanted, and she ended up driving my Focus for 1.5 years before constant gentle prodding on my part got my car returned to me two months ago. (The 325i is nice, but the all season tires it came with... yuck!)

Hey, I got all season tires on my Focus! :( I also got four seasons to deal with, the worst of which is right now. Handles fine or at least that's what I told myself as I drove 85 mph through snow storm.

If it's the Firestone Firehawk GTA2 205/50HR16's that came with the ZTS/ZX3, in my experience, those tires performed admirably. Decent snow performance, but extremely confident rain performance and pretty fun dry weather performance. That said, one really has to switch to high performance summer tires to fully appreciate the Focus's handling. When I switched to Potenza 750's, it really was a night and day difference.
Just checked my tire pressures on my bikes. (My tubes leak slowly enough that I just double check once a week on my commuter and twice a week on my other bike. Both of which are really more often than necessary.) And checked with my non-commuter bike's computer. Hmm, I put 163.2 miles on it this month. :( That's my lowest ever monthly mileage. Oh well, between jeans shopping and car issues, I have a bit of an excuse. But I really need to start getting out there for my pre-breakfast rides again now that the sun's coming up a bit earlier again and the morning low temperatures are back up a bit. Otherwise, I won't be in shape for Breathless Agony, an extremely hilly century coming up in May.

heh. I used tdo have that with my Mountain bike. Surpisingly despite my moutnain bike having a 4-5 millimeter hole puncture hole in it the air has stayed in there for over a month of non-usage. I've had one or 2 slow leaks on my road bike, but most of the time its boooom instant flat.
Okay, time to put on knee warmers, arm warmers, and base layer to save myself a bit of time tomorrow when preparing for my pre-breakfast ride. I'll probably go to bed pretty soon... planning on getting up at 6 and aiming to be out the door for my pre-breakfast ride by 6:20.

WELL...not sure if my PLAN truly involves adopting Jyossarian (is that a reference to Catch 22 BTW???) any hoo....I had decided when I got divorced that I would not make a serious commitment (read: marriage or "adoption" :D ) for 3-5 years. My one year divorce ann. came up in december, so that makes it 2-4 years now. that is my plan. what do you think? am I being silly?
peregrine
03-01-06, 12:20 AM
No, I think that's reasonable. I can imagine a divorce can shake you and your belief in 'commitment' but also, you can't really plan on what's going to happen in so-and-so years. I mean, something much better and truly wonderful might await you around the corner, you never know :D :p
