Personally I'd go in search for something stout and brewed... :D
peregrine, is your sig a commute profile? gmap-ped?
peregrine
03-07-06, 07:17 PM
haha yup, that's my short 6-mile commute to work. I recently discovered gmap and was kinda surprised at the elevation... I though I climbed higher :o
Your commute looks fun. We should trade places... I'd love a commute like that. And you evidently climb better than I do, at least for short climbs. (Conclusion based on the estimated grade of the steeper portions of your commute and the gearing on your cross bike.)

It is fun, especially that quite steep, short climb at the ~ 5.5 mile when I absolutely HAVE to stand up otherwise I wouldn't make it :D

Just when I was getting impressed... you shattered my image of your climbing ability. Just kidding... it looks like a fun route, and with the gearing on your cross bike, I'd probably choose to stand on that really steep portion, too. (But probably could manage without standing.)
For people's amusement, the profile from my favorite 15 mile morning loop. Topo measures 2000 vertical feet. Taking out some spurious data points and some meaningless minor bumps in the road (does going up and down 5 feet 20 times really count for 100 feet of climbing?), there's about 1700-1800 feet of climbing.
I hope to eventually do this loop in one hour flat. My PR is currently 3:42 above that.

Do all the climbing in the first half hour. Then all that's left will be downhills and you'll beat that 1 hr mark easily. ;)
Well, I'm done with work. I think I'll take a slight detour from my 3 mile drive home and see if my new seating position is properly dialed in. :) Then get my bikes prepped and try to get to bed early enough to want to get up for a pre-breakfast ride.

There's no sufficiently long climb near my apartment. What would be much easier is doing the loop in the opposite direction. But that's no fun... if I don't need a 30/25 gear, then the hill isn't steep enough! :D

Some psychotic thing I read in a bike mag once: Spin 80 rpm or so up the hill and try to get as close to the top as you can get. When your spin starts to dip below 80, gear UP, stand up and crank it the rest of the way. Hurts like hell, but supposedly good for dropping fellow competitors. I've tried it and it sucks after you do the first hill and there's another hill waiting for you or if it's a long ascent. Makes your legs stronger though.

That's not so crazy. And with a bit of practice, it doesn't hurt so bad.
Back on topic... I'm home now, bumming around.
Just so that you all know that everything is all right with the world. I'm drinking coffee and wondering why Karldar is bunching his fists at me. *sniff*
On the upside, it's gonna be 60 on Saturday! WHOO HOO! :D
Drinking coffee and reading 1000 new emails, I just got home from a cycling trip to Utah. Next I have to unpack and wash cycling dirty clothing, should be fun opening the suitcase!
Drinking Chai Tea and watching the snow fall here in Denver. Kinda sad cause that rules out riding for a few days. The gym and I will become good friends again this week.
...enjoying a lovely spring day:

Didn't ride this morning since I woke up to falling rain at 4:30. Yeah, the rain had stopped by 6, but climbing steep grades in damp conditions didn't sound like fun this morning. Trying to decide what to have for breakfast.

lol, well actually I was half-joking about that, I can make it sitting but it's too slow and painful :p :D Still though, I'm sure you're a better climber than me... I've never even done a century.

Let's see... how to explain to a flatlander...
They're multi-story parking garages, except without the parking spaces.

Interesting. Haven't read the whole thread, but it nudged a memory in my head and after a little searching, found this formula from an old issue of Sport Compact Car (http://www.sportcompactcarweb.com/editors/technobabble/0109scc_technobabble/index.html):

With a little screwing around by making the crank and chainring the flywheel and using your highest and lowest gear ratios, you could come up with an effective weight of a rotating mass.

I just got back from almost 8 hours of driving for a not even 1 hour interview. Believe I'm going accept the position, only because its muchos money
Congrats on the job, TG. Remember, everything is negotiable, so make sure you get what you're worth. And if you think you'll be there for a while, keep in mind that recurring benefits (such as a higher salary) are more valuable to you than one-time benefits (like a larger signing bonus). Of course, recurring benefits are also harder to negotiate.

Congrats Tejas Hombre. But if the job's 4 hrs. away (based on 8 hrs. of total driving), isn't that a long commute? Or is it shorter by bike?

Thanks. I'd be suprised if i'm there more then 2 years. I do not know what life has in store for me. And I'm not good at negotiating because its hard for me to read people.

Yeah, I read your other thread. Good luck!
Finally done with work. Haven't eaten yet, but there's some leftovers in my apartment that my mom had prepared for me over the weekend. I guess it will be my dinner tonight.
Took a bit longer than expected to leave the office since my mom called just as I was about to leave. No big deal... just saying hi and seeing how I like the car.
I'm now eating the dinner she prepared. Contemplating having some ice cream after dinner in honor of Siu Blue Wind's birthday.

Touch of insomnia due to thinking about picking up a thrift store find. It's a lugged steel roadbike frame covered in electrical tape and and spray painted flat black. The standover's about right and the top tube's longer than what you normally see today. It's a ghettoed/rednecked singlespeed meaning the cassette's still on the bike, but the RD and FD are gone and the chain's been shortened to make up for the lack of a chain tensioner. If I were to get it, I could ride it as-is or I could strip the tape off to see what it actually is, then paint it again. Or I could do a budget SS conversion w/ a bunch of spacers and one cog. Or if the frame's actually a good one, refurbish it. All these possibilities are running through my mind and keeping me up looking at prices for stuff (wheels, cranks, cogs, etc.).
Seems like a bunch of work for a bike you may or may not get. Plus, didn't you just get a fixie recently? Not satisfied with just one new toy, huh?
Done with dinner, and I was a good boy and ate an apple. Now on to some dessert...

Sounds like a nice find, jyo.
I'd love to find an older (80's, early 90's) (cheap?) Surly Pacer or a Bridgestone RB with those elegant sleek tubes, but not flashy and, with minimal amounth of stuff on it *sigh* ... oh, and I'd paint it that earthy orange color
