Foo - Whatcha doin'?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Seems like a bunch of work for a bike you may or may not get. Plus, didn't you just get a fixie recently? Not satisfied with just one new toy, huh?
Sounds like a nice find, jyo.
I'd love to find an older (80's, early 90's) (cheap?) Surly Pacer or a Bridgestone RB with those elegant sleek tubes, but not flashy and, with minimal amounth of stuff on it *sigh* ... oh, and I'd paint it that earthy orange color
That's the mystery of it. I'd have to pretty much toss everything and just keep the frame. The frame's got nice geometry and could be a decent SS or roadie setup. But a roadie rehab would prob. be more expensive unless I bought an old used group. It'd be more of a project beater bike if I were to pick it up. The mind exercise of rehabbing it is what kept me awake. As for color, it actually looks kinda cool spraypainted matte black.

Yeah, I can see how a SS would be better. What I was talking about was also a bike that'd be for running errands and just going around town, one with a cheaper drivetrain, old seat, cheaper wheels, regular pedals... one that I wouldn't be too worried to leave locked outside for long, one that doesn't look special but is still in excellent condition and well maintained. My Fuji cross is awesome and I love it but I don't like leaving it outside (as in when I go to see a movie or to the pub). I'm not sure if I'm making any sense.

Oh, and what I'm doing right now is staring outside my window at the snow flurries dancing around. I woke up this morning, looked out my window and saw snow everywhere. This is quite unusual for Porland... it hasn't stopped but it's warm enough outside that it melts almost instantly.

I know exactly what you mean. I already have a beater bike which until last week was also my only bike. It's components aren't the best, but I have it dialed into suit me. It's about 40 lbs w/ 10+ lbs being the chain and lock. But the bike I saw yesterday has me thinking of a new, lighter, simpler beater bike that I could either keep in my tiny apt. (unlikely) or ship it to my Mom's in Fla. so I'll have a bike to ride when I visit. Or I could retire my old beater bike to Fla. and keep the new beater bike. Or I could just resist the temptation to buy it.
I guess it depends on where you live. I have no qualms about parking my commuter road bike outside the pub for a few hours. And I see on occasion at the bike rack at work a Kestrel Talon with Mavic wheels and Ultegra components which probably costs a decent bit more than my carbon fiber weekend warrior. And it wasn't even particularly well locked down. That said, my Specialized Roubaix doesn't get parked outside even though there's other people parking similarly expensive bikes outside.
Getting some work done before making my airport run at 4 PM. It's the start of the final round of prospective graduate student interviewing/recruiting. :)

Sounds really nice, jyo. I guess you could make an estimate of how much it'll cost you: frame + rehab and weigh that over how much you'll ride it (which you've probably done already :o). I think you'll enjoy a lighter, simpler beater bike more :D

OMG, this snow is just not stopping!! I feel like I'm up in the mountains.... it doesn't melt any more and if the temps drop, we'll be stuck here up on the hill.... One of my lab mates is REALLY not happy about this. What I'm hearing right now is: This is dick! Yeah, I would. :D I've gone through this exercise before w/ my beater bike when I got the idea to replace the bb and drivetrain completely. After scouring the web and comparing prices, I ended up w/ an estimated $900 for new shifters, FD, RD, cranks, cassette, cables, bb, etc. That's almost 3x what I paid for the bike. So instead, I left it as-is, replaced the fork instead and my bike got instantly faster. :D

Eanie Meanie Minie Moe is a great way to make decisions like this. The secret is when calling the business owner, you make it sound like he was chosen because of some "enduring/redeeming quality" that makes him feel special :p

So in some very indirect way, my advice is consultation to avoid the very popular scar implant plastic surgery. I should start charging. This could be very profitable. :D

Don't fall for it, Lex. He's trying to con you. It's right here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucy_van_Pelt).
Oh, and seeing as this customer's so ungrateful, charge him the full $500 next time. Save the discounted price for admirers like me.
Back on topic... Just ate a late lunch. Gotta make an airport run in a bit over two hours. Work isn't going so well today, but at least the lab portion of it is almost over. (The airport run and beer/margaritas and dinner tonight is an official Scripps event that I must attend. What a tough day.)

It kinda sounds like we work together. I hate taking the time to check every detail of the forecast the night before a ride and winding up with something totally different in the morning after work. On the one hand, it pisses me off that, with all the technology available today, they can't accurately predict weather. On the other hand, I'm kinda glad that Mother Nature keeps us guessin'.;)

All this posting and I forgot to mention that the bike shop called last night. Bike is in and should be ready today! I forgot to check my messages last night before work and I rode my motorcycle in, forgetting to transfer my phone from my other jacket. Plus, my ride partner ordered a bike with me(they're both in) and the shop asked me to pass the info along to him(instead of calling him directly). Hope he's not too mad when I tell him, oh, about 24 hrs late.:o
