Foo - Whatcha doin'?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It was so darn nice out that I had to clean the garage instead of ride. With spring weather just around the corner I had to get the bikes organized so that I could get the car in yet still have quick access to the bikes. Here is how it came out. What a day!

Firstly, that's not a "cheese eatin' grin." I was eating mud, thankyouverymuch. As for the bike, well, the rear tire was underinflated so I took it back and demanded a refund. I mean, if they can't get the tire firm enough for my ginormous ass, I'm not buying from them. Would you?:p

I'd have done the same thing. Lousy Canadian made bicycles. Next time buy American! This Flight Fighter (http://www.flight-bikes.com/Pages/fighter.html) looks kinda nice.

I also took my first failure to unclip fast enough fall at a hairpin turn on the exit off the bridge. Luckily I had come to a complete stop and basically just fell over. When I got home I remembered where my cycling shorts are. Oh well, I'll wear them next time.
That's okay... I did that on my road bike the first and third times I went out for a ride. Rode up the apartment complex driveway in a 42/25 gear, and with my atrocious balance back then, fell over for lack of speed going up the slight incline. (Almost fell over the second time, too!)
That's nothing, my first fall was when I was actually standing in line - right foot on the ground, left on the pedal. I was just sort of daydreaming I think, and then all of a sudden I lost my balance and toppled over to the left :o And there were all these people around... *shakes head* Way to go, peregrine!

And earlier, I also spent 45 minutes eating breakfast with prospective grad students, then another 45 minutes showing a particular prospective student around (umm, no comment), and then ten minutes later, had to show a group of four prospective students around for another 20 minutes. In between, I only got about 20 minutes of research done, so I need to get caught up.
Hold up brutha! You spent 45 minutes w/ PGS (Pretty Grad Student) showing her around and only 20 minutes showing a whole group around? Looks like she got the deluxe tour while everyone else got the nickel tour! So what kinda bike she ride? Is it made in Taiwan if you know what I'm sayin'? ;)

I got that beat. I was standing at the top of a ski run just kinda looking at people getting off the lift and fell right over!

Any pics of your hair? :) 22 miles, huh? That's more than my total from the last two weeks. Tomorrow's looking good, though, for a long ride.
Trouble for tonight? I know my plans. There's a party with the prospective grad students. Dinner and open bar. (Beer, wine, hard liquor.) Starts in three hours.
I just took a quick break to drive to McDonald's to buy a double cheeseburger. Wolfed that down really fast. Now it's back to finishing up my work for the day.

Nice! It was a beautiful day to ride so I did. I did a few more miles than that, but I was by myself. :( Actually, I probably could've hooked on w/ a group since I did pass a couple riding groups, but I'd have killed myself trying to stay w/ them on my mtb.
As for suggestions, nothing says fun like a dance club. If you got 'em, Latin dance clubs sometimes offer lessons before the club gets full.

PGS, huh? Okay, sure... another pseudo-random acronym. But since she's not a grad student yet, it should stand for Prospective Grad Student. Plus, I never said anything about her looks. She and I talked for about two hours last night, so it only makes sense she would get a personalized tour today. The others saw all the same stuff. We just discussed various things in less depth.
I think if I drive her back to the hotel again tonight, perhaps I'll give her a copy of a highly coveted book my professor put together in honor of the 70th birthday of one of the most famous organic chemists. Only a few hundred copies were ever made, and all but a few dozen belong to former students of that chemist. And the few remaining unclaimed copies are all in my office. I know a grad students who once did three hours of busywork (making copies of papers in the library) for his professor in exchange for one hour with "the book".
peregrine, have fun with your sister. :)
Almost forgot... bike. No clue what PGS rides. I know that she's not much of a climber, though. (That or she rides a double and doesn't have proper gearing.)

I need to eat. Trying to decide what, at the moment. Gonna go buy some CD's, so I might just pick something up. I'd like to go to an actual restaurant, but I feel weird going by myself.:o Also cruising Myspace-my newest addiction.
Karldar, nothing wrong with eating in a restaurant by yourself. I do it all the time. I usually have no social life.

Bring a book to the restaurant. Then you can something to do while you wait for your meal. I'm making shrimp stock for tonight's dinner, shrimp and grits. Gonna reduce the stock to make the sauce.
As for the PGS, is she on BF reading all this stuff we've been talking about?

Not at the moment, but it's conceivable she might be on BF once she's back home tomorrow. I don't think so, though. If she reads about herself in this thread, it will be very clear it was written by me about her. (Even with the username and the avatar covered up.)

Nah, I've decided not to eat out. Can't really justify the expense after picking up the bike and shoes...oh, and CD's.
My reaction didn't go so well today. Oh well, such is research often. I'm tired. I'm not so sure I feel like attending a party. Maybe I'll attend, but just not socialize much. I could just eat and hang out with the grad students that I know rather than dealing with the prospective students some more. (Now you can see how come the last eight times, I didn't bother to go... by Saturday night, I just don't care that much anymore. Well, that and the last two Saturdays, I couldn't go because of car shopping.)

How'd it happen?
(I have a thread in the road section but to cut it short) Going along at 25 ish MPH, before i know it bam, I am on the ground yelling (my way of avoding crying, just swear as loud as I can, gets rid of the anger nicely :D )
I went along the rode at like 5 mph, got to a local library, went into the bathroom to see if i could clean it out. The blood was a little too much for the library so I decided to head over to the public saftey building (fire and police dept). I go into the place and i ask the dispatch lady where the bathroom is (my voice was shaky, I was in pain) and then she double back and asked "Are you alright?".
Cleaned up there, and the deputy chief gave me a ride home. So yeah, my bike is at the fire dept. It still hurts, more stings. But hey thats life! (its going to rain alot tomm, so hey at least I rode!)

That's what I was getting tired of. I finally got all of the hangers and walls studs alligned so that everything fit as "one". We'll see how it works 6 months from now! LOL
hi565, I saw the other thread, too. Glad you're okay.
I'm back from the Saturday night party with the prospective students. Quickly ate a light dinner before the prospective students got there, hung out with some of the grad students over a rum and coke while the prospective students ate, hung out with some other grad students over some beer, then did my obligatory chatting with the girl I was hosting and a guy who's interested in our lab. (It was fun, though.) By the time the drinking games starting breaking out, I found PSG and her roommate and hung out with them the rest of the time. Had some vodka and orange juice with them and sat around and talked. My labmate joined us, which was great since they got along with him really well, too.
I had told them I could give them copies of "the book" at my office, so they agreed to let me drive them back when they wanted to go to bed and to pick up "the book" along the way. They dragged along one of the other prospective students who was hoping to get back to the hotel, and since he's one of the people I was supposed to be on the lookout for, it was good that I had a chance to talk to him. So he got lucky and got a copy of "the book", too. I just gave away about 10% of the world's supply of unclaimed copies of "the book". A slight misuse of the resources stored in my office, but hopefully it might help lure them to the institute.
Sitting around now thinking about what to do tomorrow. It will be a bit cold, but not too windy and not raining. So finally, a long ride. Not sure where I'm riding, though, seeing as I'm so flabby and out of shape now. My preferred route really has no bail-out points, and I'm not sure I'm up for 68 miles with over 5000 feet of climbing.
I'm the only member on Foo right now. I guess that means I'm just talking to myself, and I should go to bed. Still not yet decided as to where I'm riding tomorrow. I guess I'll sleep on it, so to speak.

I honestly dont know how it happened, I am pretty sure the road became course then my bike swerved and before I know it I was on the ground.

All the more reason we need pics! :D Hope you had a blast last night. Given the time you got home, I assume you did. :) And hope you enjoy your ride. I still haven't picked my route for the day. I haven't gone over 15 miles since early February, so I'm not sure what I'm up for. I need to eat and hydrate myself first anyway since I didn't eat that much last night and didn't drink all that much in the way of non-alcoholic stuff.

It was fun. Last night was a nice change of pace. And another chance to try to convince PGS that she really wants to join the lab 50 feet away from mine. (Yes, she spent 45 minutes touring my lab yesterday. But I believe she's probably more interested in the other lab's research.)

Oh right... it's March already. I'm so clueless... this is what I get for not spending the money for the Speed Channel. :( Who's on pole? [e] Never mind... I guess the red cars are back up at the front of the grid.

Oops, sorry. It's M. Schumacher. 2nd is Massa, so all Ferraris at the front row :] Yikes, I see Alonso already passed Massa  That was a nice start. [e] Oh and Räikkönen was last at the start :( Tough luck. Still, I think he could pull off a fnish in the top 8 though.
There's a new qualification system this year. Instead of the old single lap system, now they qualify through 2x15 min phases (slowest 6 cars dropping out at each phase) and 1x20 min phase for the 1st place
Don't attend to me... just watch the race. Since I won't be watching, I went ahead and found out what happened already. Don't worry, I won't spoil anything for you, but I'll say that you're in for a treat. I'm somewhat tempted to not ride today and instead park myself at a sports bar to watch a later rerun of the race. But then, there's my hilly century coming up in two months...
I sometimes wish I was paying for Speed Channel. Then I could park myself on my trainer and watch the race.

Do you have satellite or cable? Can you subscribe for it just for a couple of months while the season lasts? If the first 10 laps of the first race are any indication, it'll be a lot of fun this year! :D
I've decided I'll probably just do some hill repeats today to get my climbing back to form. Not aiming for speed since I haven't really been on my bike much recently. Just aiming to be back in climbing form (even at a relaxed pace). There's a 700 foot hill nearby that's just over a mile long. If I climb that over and over, I should get my vertical feet in really fast. Only problem is, the descent is kind of treacherous. I usually descend on the other side, which is much less steep. I dunno... in any case, I'm putting off my ride a bit to let it get warmer outside since it's very much on the cool side today.
