At least you won for losing though right?

I'm at work. I didn't cycle to work today cause it was raining and I wasn't feeling really adventurous through the rain and dark clouds at 7am in the morning. Houston seems to flood very easily.

Good morning Lex.
Morning, Tex.
Is it morning? No time to stop for coffee today so I may have to take your word for it until I can get my eyes to open all the way.

It could be night, by how dark it was when I left.

No, you're right. It's morning. It has all those sure signs of morning. Co-worker in his chair, cinder block walls, work piled desk. *sigh* No coffee though.
Do you go in really early?

No, It was raining so it was cloudy and I leave at 7am in the mornin. so the storm clouds and the rain blocked what little sun there is out at 7

When you say dark, I think ungodly early hour when no person should ever be awake.....hence my confusement. :D

People shouldn't be awake until 8-9am. This way I can ride to work in peace and enjoy nature :)

Oh personally I've not had too many problems, although I could. most of the sidewalks are in disrepair or are obstructed by things, or are disconnected. This means that you have to ride on the road to get anywhere. There are some roads like Memorial Drive that have minimum/maximum speeds posted. I of course ride on it and have not had any problems however I am technically "breaking" the law and am just waiting for somebody to come along and ticket me. Apparently somebody who works for us and also commutes to work on his bike actually had a run in on the cop on that road in the park. It did not go to well from what I heard but thankfully didn't result in a ticket.

I do play nice with cars. That's why I've not had too many problems to date. However the problems come from ******* cops who would run over pedestirans who decide to butt their noses in where it's not needed instead of solving real problems.

He was going through Memorial Park, which Memorial Drive does. I think its 2 wide lanes in places that it's not 3 lanes. It's a big park and there are "running" paths, dirt/fine gravel paths. Apparently there are also some cement sidewalks, but what few there are are sporadic. E.g. they may got for 500 feeet and then turn into regular running paths shared by many runners, joggers, and strollers and animals.
Well the cop stopped him and told him to get on the sidewalk. When he said that he had a road bike and he couldn't travel on the dirt paths and that the sidewalk was broken and ended and turned into dirt paths the cop didn't seem to care. Apparently it got a bit heated but eventually he complied. He got on and when the sidewalk ended and turned into agravel road a bit later (aparently in view of the cop) he got off and onto the road. He didn't get stopped agian.
It's my personal feeling that if you have to get back onto the road from a sidewalk, or ending curb at any time you can't give it up at all because thats usuallywhere you will get creamed by drivers who don't realize or care that you neeed to get back on the road.

Wait! But are cyclists supposed to ride on the sidewalk in Texas? It's illegal here for anyone over the age of 9 and for a very good reason.

From my observation, there are mixed rules. There are some areas in Houston where it specifically states for bicycles TO NOT ride on the sidewalk. All over Houston there are signs saying "Share the road", "Bicycles are vehicles". On several roads where there are dedicated bike lanes and they approach highways there are even signs that tell people pulling into that extra right-turn-only lane to yield to the cyclists sine they cross the bike path.
On some roads, for some parts there are posted min speed limits. Now this of course is in the park :rollseye: so why the cop would be doing this I dont' know. But I'm not fully abreast, nor would I know where to go , or how to understand what they were "really" trying to say to find out Houston law regarding cycling. I just take this from signs posted around Houston.

From what I've heard, we have the same problems here. The police not enforcing the bike laws because they really don't know them in order to enforce them. There are also areas where riding on the street is lawful but deadly. It's a tough balance but stopping a cyclist and taking that person off the street (if that was the only purpose) really smacks of a need to do homework.

Yeah. Any time where it's safe enough to take a cyclist off of the road it means it was safe enough to do so. Any time it's not safe enough to do so means that most likely not very safe to ride let alone trying to pull somebody off the road. It makes no sense, especially in that situation. I mean part of Memorial Drive has a minimum posted limit and then a nother part is posted as no non-motorized vehicles. And in the area that it's marked as no non-motorized vehicles I can see why. It has 2 lanes, with no shoulders and it merges and splits and both of those situations become even crazier when cyclists mix.
The place where it is posted as 45 minimum the road is 3+ lanes and it is a short brief period that I'm on it to get to another road. I'm sure one of these days I'm going to get pulled over though, as that is my lot in life. Getting pulled ove in the park though. that's sad.

*Stopping Tex and pulling out ticket pad*
Sir, do you realize that you were looking at that butterfly while cycling. That's distracted driving.
And ooooooooooo.....going 20 under the speed limit. Yep, that's gonna be costly.
And, Sir, we require pedestrian blood on your front tire and yours seems to be missing. If you can't stop by with pedestrian blood within the next 24 hours, I'll have to ticket you for that too. :D
Seriously, I have the greatest respect for the men and women who work for the police department. :D

I respect policemen as a whole but I have no respect for half of the cops I've seen here in Houston. They are part of what makes Houston a new Orleans in the making. They would rather kill civilians while going through an intersection.

I'm reading BF, listening to...nothing(my CD's done), and drinking Beck's Dark(alternating with Shiner Bock) and wondering what Pogos are.
Pogos is a brand of corn dog. I've never had them (food allergy) but Dear little one has them sometimes and they appear HORRIBLY greasy.
I'm checking e-mail and figured I'd check things out over here. Dear little one and I are having a girl day today. Should be fun.
