Houston hills are made of flatness.
Never been to Houston (thankfully), but it sounds kind of like Florida. It gets real boring driving in Florida, so our family made up a really dumb game to play with people who haven't ridden with us before. As we drive around, we'll point to a section of road that rises up when we pass by, and say "Look! A hill!" Then, after a pause comes the punch line. "Never mind. It's an overpass". Once the new people catch on, we revert to playing "I spy."

Hehehe. That's pretty much how it is here. The only "hills" are overpasses :D I've only played the alphabet driving game with my sister-in-law while crossing from middle of texas to eastern New Mexico.

Has anybody seen RV. I was itching to do something last night and it turns out there is an iMax Cinema 5-6 blocks and 5-7 interstates away. So I went to see a movie and saw RV. Very funny. And Robin Williams got to include cycling into it :D and stressing the importance of a proper fit

Robin Williams is a BIG cycling fan. I'm not surprised he squeezed a cycling reference into it. I couldn't tell from the reviews whether that movie would be funny or not. I guess I'll have to look into it.

That movie is a riot. Think Miss Doubtfire, but better and a bit homier.
Of course you have to like Robin Williams and his sense of humor :D

So I just went to get some coffee and was walking behind a man and a woman for a little bit. They were discussing a potential employee and the guy was reading through his application. He says something like:
- Look at that! He has NO previous experience. None! He's a... a.... what's the word?! A.. ... baby. Yeah, baby. He's a baby.
The woman kinda looks at him like "Wht?" and then she says
- Uh, you mean a newbie?
<Pause>
- Yeah, yeah a newbie. That's right. He's a newbie.
 I don't know why but that just cracked me up and I had to try real hard to hold my laughter

What am I doing? I'm getting ready to go home and wondering whether its going to try raining on me when I go home. Supposedly we got a massive downpour this morning. Roads didn't seem very wet though. In fact when this lady told me it poured I was surprised.

I could eat raw organically grown fruits and vegetables my whole life and I'd still die. The difference is, I'd be happier dying having enjoyed my food Mr. Grilled Cheese-boy. ;)
Hey, that cheese was made of real milk!
It said so right on the package.
We also used whole wheat bread.

Exactly my point 'splody. Back OT, I'm wondering what to eat for dinner. I have a feeling a grilled chicken will be involved.

Hmmm I dunno, maybe when inorganic chemistry is too involved in the process. The inorganic chemistry that doesn't let tomatoes go bad after keeping them for weeks in the fridge, that makes them completely tasteless and that also turns apples into perfect, spotless, blemishless, waxed little balls. At least that's what I understand as 'inorganic' produce... :o Sorry for the rant (which is not aimed at you :] ) but the lack of taste in the fruits and vegetables sold massively in this coutry is something I just can't get used to :(
Since when did paraffins become inorganic? And I thought you and I had a special understanding, P. Now if we want to discuss fertilizers, yes, ammonium nitrate is inorganic. (It's also a halfway decent explosive. And yes, you can buy 50 pound bags full of the stuff at your local gardening store. It was infamously used to destroy a certain Oklahoma City building.)
Inorganic produce is the marble Napa cabbage sculpture that my parents have. :p
Okay, back on topic... I'm about to take a dinner break since I'm really hungry. It probably wouldn't take all that long to simply finish my work tonight, but at this point, I really want to eat first, even if it's not the most efficient way to go about things.
And I'm still figuratively kicking myself for having allowed myself to de-train so much. Just a little training, and perhaps I could have finished Breathless Agony. :( Oh well... next year...

I think you need to start training again and do a few more rides this year. The year's not over jsc! Get out there and find out why riding is so much fun!
The year's far from over! But Breathless Agony isn't rolling around again until next year. As for this year, I need to first regain my lost performance, then tackle that Mt Baldy time goal of mine. If I ride anywhere near the way I did in November (5 days/week, about 110 miles and about 10k vertical feet per week), that goal should still be within reach. Starting tomorrow morning, I hope to be out there training again. (Hopefully, I won't barf climbing Mt Soledad.) Breathless Agony was fun, but it would have been a LOT more fun if I had managed an extra 1 MPH.
I've tried two centuries now, and I must say that while they're fun in moderation, I'm not really a distance rider. Give me a tough 2-3 hour climb instead. That said, I still hope to someday pull off my ultimate century: four trips up and down Mt Baldy Rd. Maybe next summer. I clearly don't have the endurance this summer even if I get my speed back quickly enough. If I ride tempo and manage to average 2.5 hours per climb, that's 12 hours in the saddle. Even with an average of 2 hours per climb (faster than my PR), that's still 10 hours of riding.

Hehe...I say get convert your commuter to a fixie and try climbing some hills. Long climbs'll kill you, but it'll make you a stronger climber regardless cuz you have to use the whole spin to climb. Plus it's fun. Maybe if PGS goes to school there you'll have a riding partner. ;)

Yeah, I know paraffin's 'organic'. Generally I've been blaming the lack of taste mostly on too much fertilization but honestly I could be wrong. I guess I should've stayed with 'chemistry', but I was trying to make a stronger point :o ... And my point is that, all the junk that has been added to or used for the processing of produce makes it 'inorganic' to me (and you know what I mean by that :P), makes it unnatural and artificial in my mind. I'm sorry if that sounds weird or too extreme to you but eating fresh fruit and vegetables for 18 years (ones that smell and taste soooo good) and then switching to the tasteless stuff here, made a huge difference for me.
And I'm still figuratively kicking myself for having allowed myself to de-train so much. Just a little training, and perhaps I could have finished Breathless Agony. :( Oh well... next year...
Nah, don't kick yourself too hard. Take it as another lesson learned and look forward to the next ride that hopefully will be more fun and less agony :)
peregrine, I know what you mean about tasteless fruits and vegetables. Blame Monsanto and all the genetic engineering (either by traditional cross-pollination techniques or by actual genetic engineering) for produce that's shippable rather than produce that tastes good. Imagine what would happen to those lovely soft, sweet strawberries that are red to the core if they were shipped the way the strawberries found in your local supermarket are shipped. You'd end up with strawberry juice long before they reached the store!
Oh, and don't worry, I won't kick myself too hard. My calf muscles are still a tiny bit sore, so I can't kick all that hard. :o
jyo, PGS decided to go to Harvard. (Why anyone would go there is beyond me. :p ) So no potential riding partner there. As for a fixie, I'll pass for now. I have enough trouble with climbs as it is, with my triple.

I like going to the green market where farmers bring their fruits, veggies and preserves. The food's fresher, locally grown and tastes better than most grocery store offerings. I know what you mean about tasteless fruit and I like the idea of the green market because it supports smaller farms and cooperatives and you can get to know the growers and who makes good stuff and who doesn't.
jsc, start commuting again. They may be garbage miles, but they're miles and you can stretch out the ride home by taking detours to Julian or wherever.

 Julian is about 60 miles away, with perhaps 6k-7k vertical feet of climbing round trip. That would be some detour! And that's along the shorter route. The longer, scenic route I usually drive is noticably hillier. But oh so fun to drive. :D
I think commuting and pre-breakfast rides don't mix too well. I just don't have enough time, and I'd rather ride longer, harder pre-breakfast rides. Maybe I'll start commuting again on my recovery days, but only after I get back in the regular practice of pre-breakfast rides. 10k+ vertical feet per week would do wonders for my fitness.

Cool. So when does the pre-breakfast rides start?
According to my plan, tomorrow morning. I hope to re-adopt my schedule from last fall. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday pre-breakfast rides. Sunday long ride. Monday off. Friday at my discretion.
I hope to be back near PR times on Baldy by my birthday. (June 24) Endurance isn't a big issue anymore for Baldy. It's just not that long. All that really matters is (1) sustainable power output and (2) the ability to give a bit more for the really steep sections--notably the 1/4 mile of 15% grade right at the end. And since Baldy is my benchmark, my training is going to reflect those two priorities.

At the moment Im kind of pissed because I have to watch this ladies cats and I swear they are the spawn of the devil. They won't let me pet them!!! and when I come near they hiss and run by me. Grrrr
Im also pretty happy though. Tomorow Im going to ride somewhere new in palo alto. I found some trails pretty close. Also this saturday our scout troop is doing a day ride in san francisco (which was my idea... well me and my friend made a 25 mile ride including trails and it got turned down but oh well instead were only doing streets in san francisco which is still cool). btw, Im an assistant scoutmaster my dads the scout master lol.
Getting some of my cycling gear prepped for tomorrow morning, then going to bed. Bike's prepped. Getting base layer, socks, knee warmers, arm warmers on. Those items are quite comfy to wear to sleep. Only problem is, your core is a bit underinsulated compared to your extremities. And, umm, your private area is rather underinsulated. But if you indiscriminately cover up your entire body with a blanket, then your extremities get too warm. So you have to lay the blanket over yourself just right and not toss and turn during the night.

It's okay. You can call me now.
I wish there was someone better than me who wanted to ride with me all the time. Hmm, speaking of which, I really should return dog hair's PM tomorrow and try to find a time to ride with him again. :o I'd do it now, but my laptop's browser is too old to handle the PM composing page properly.
About to brush my teeth. Bedtime is fast approaching.
Okay, since there's nothing else I have to do tonight, I should get to bed. I should get back in the habit of not staying up needlessly and getting more sleep on the nights that I have the luxury of doing so if I'm going to get back in shape. Good night, all.

Word! I've been commuting through rain for months, hardly ever seeing the sun. I can't believe what a huge difference it makes for my determination in the morning when it's nice and sunny outside and it smells like spring! :D
I only recently started riding on weekends again after a long ski season so if it weren't for commuting I don't know what kind of shape I would've been in :o
What I'm doing right now is looking online for a studio to rent for a few months until the friend I want to move in with is ready to move out of her parent's house. It's weird that I'm considering not only the neighbourhood but also the distance from work. I don't wanna live too close because I need longer and longer daily bike rides. :D I think I got it bad :p
