Foo - Whatcha doin'?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
And the foot you put down will have a bit of metal to make sure that the lightning has a path to seek ground! Did not ride last night because of thunder and lightning.

Dipper, glad to hear that you have a more positive outlook than last time we spoke. Life challenges us, and I do not envy you your challenge, but it sounds as if you are rising to meet yours admirably and will come out of this a better person. Not inferring that you were a bad person to begin. Keep us informed and let us know what we can do to help.
Thanks.
Here's how I look at it Jeff....
Sometimes bad things happen so that a person can learn a lesson from it and grow.
I could not for the life of me figure out what I had to gain by this experience it was so traumatic and bad. Then I remembered that other people besides me exist in this world.
Sometimes bad things happen so that a person can teach others a lesson from it, and grow that way.
Maybe this life just ain't about me...I'm willing to go the distance, do what I need to do, and find out for myself.:)
James:
Best of luck on your newest journey! Seeing your posts today has really made me feel better.
Jeff
That's the ticket. Now get off your phat 20-year-old ass and get to runnin'.:D
Thanks Dipper, you ARE and inspiration.
Let me finish my fries and my burger first though.

Glad to see you're awake and around and, uh, coherent!
My sister had to do some facial reconstructive surgery (cheekbone and ear) and she's as pretty as ever, so don't worry, Dipper, you're still the fairest in all the land. Hang in there.

Back from my ride. The good news is I didn't wreck. The bad news is I think I trashed my rear Ksyrium SL SSC wheel.

6-8 weeks (treatment and surgery), then recovery from surgery. Think UPS delivery times, but shorter.:)
You'll be as good as new in no time and still have the summer to enjoy. BTW, let us know when you're doped up on painkillers so I can make you an insanely good offer of unicorns for the pink trackie.

Serendipper, your good attitude is making me feel guilty about mine. :o
A beautiful swedish woman named Lena I once dated gave me this poem as a gift:
Attitude by Charles Swindoll
"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on my life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company ... a church ... a home.
The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past ... we cannot change the fact that people will act a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the string we have, and that is our attitude ...
I am convinced that life is ten percent what happens to me and ninety percent how I react to it.
And so it is with you ... we are in charge of our attitudes."
Then she broke up with me.

BikeWNC, what happened to your wheel?
I was going down a hill at 30+ mph and went into a turn that had some large gravel. I thought I had missed it all but my rear wheel caught a large rock as I was leaning in the turn and kicked my wheel out and nearly threw my bike into the ditch and bank. You know when the rear wheel kicks to the right as the bike is leaned left and then the front end also moves right, (to the outside of the turn) sort of in an overcorrecting motion. I was just able to recover my line when my tire blew out, still going over 30, I managed to come to a stop just before the rim would have hit the pavement and slid out.
I thought I got away with just a flat until I tried to brake on the next hill and felt the wheel was really out of true. Turns out the is a bulge in the rim sidewall, almost a crease, which I may not be able to true. I was able to ride it the 25 miles back to the car but I don't want to trust it as it is.
It could have been a lot worse had I gone down.

Wow, that sounds scary. Do you have another wheel to use while you deal with the damage to this one?

Yes, I have 3 or 4 wheelsets laying around. The Ksyriums were the wheels that got most of the use though.
just got back from work. stupid busboys stole a good amount of my tips, but i can't accuse anyone of stealing. when i asked them where my tips went they conviniently forgot all of their english. i brought the matter of "missing tips from tables today" to a manager but there's nothing the managers can do. if this happens again i'm done. they're desperate for waitstaff at this restaurant, too. gee, wonder why.

Gee, BikeWNC, sorry to hear about that! But glad you didn't get intimately close to the pavement!
While descending Morrow yesterday, I was flying down to the first switchback, and slowed as my friend slowed. He turned first. Suddenly, I heard something crack loudly at the same time I hit a piece of gravel that made the handlebars rock in my hands. Needless to say, I said a few choice words out loud, and stopped. My friend, natch, was oblivious and happily hammerin' on down the mountain. :(
I checked everything out. We had just removed two spacers before the ride so I could get more aero, but everything was tight. Fork looked ok. Spokes fine. Tires fine. I cautiously coasted on down, and later got to cranking on the usual hilly terrain of the ride to catch up to him. Then, I heard that loud "crack" again, but realized what it was this time. It was so windy yesterday, the extra length of my chin strap had blown up on the descent and hit my helmet! I'm gonna do some cuttin' and meltin' before the next ride. :p
dont you have the little rubber band thingee on your chin strap to control strap flap?

VegaVixen: With me, the extra length of chin strp didn't hit my helmet and make noise, but it did fly and slap my face a few times. That got old in a hurry.
BikeWNC: Sorry about the wheel, glad you didn't crease yourself. Sounds like you did some pretty fancy-pants bike handling. Good on yer.
'Dipper: What can we Foosters do to help?
I'm installing limewire to download some songs so I can jog in a half hour when I drop ma brother off at college. It's foggy and miserable outside. Come back sun!!! it was 80 degrees yesterday. :(

I'm sitting here at work trying to stay at least alittle bit focused on what I'm supposed to be doing. AS if it isn't hard enough to tear myself away from Foo at the best of times, now I am distrcacted by the big box that just got delivered containing my new-old Ron Cooper frame (c. early '80s) that I scored on eBay last week. Just a little excited here. :D
Only reason I'm jogging is so I can semi keep up with Liz when we ride with her in a week. :o
My cardio level is pitiful. Yesterday during my ride it was about 80 out, hour+ climb back to the top. My face got insanely hot, to the point that I felt like my face was on fire. My heart rate was almost 200, and I had to walk my bike. Started getting a shocking pain in my head, and my heart rate wouldn't go down for at least 10 minutes. Had to poor water all over my face and neck, eventually I felt better. Think I was on the verge of heat stroke, I've never felt like that before.
The picture of me is priceless, I look pale and look like I'm about to pass out.

Time to eat a whole pizza. I haven't had lunch yet!
Just got back from the doc, last time until I get the last three moles completely removed (most likely not till late August). They took the stitches out of the head, and gave me some ointment for an allergic reaction I'm apparently having to the adhesive they used to attach the strips over the leg incisions. They had been itching BAD the last 24hrs and now I know it wasn't just 'part of the healing process' like I had been thinking. Glad I now have something to treat it with and won't scratch the fresh scars open in the middle of the night or anything!

Have about 75 minutes to finish up a few process simulations. Then it's off to the Brazillian steak house where I'll most likely eat entirely too much meat and drink entirely too much beer. Between that and the 20 lbs of deep fried tiger shrimp I've been having for lunch almost every day, I'll be surprised if I survive this trip without having a heart attack.
So long. It's been good to know you.

Just got back from taking my daughter to her piano lesson and then the bike shop. It looks like the rim will have to be replaced on the wheel, but that is surely cheaper than a whole new one. So all in all not too bad considering what might have been.
