Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Well I think you forgot, mudslide season, wildfire season, santa anna wind season, earthquake season, hot as hell season, goathead season... need I go on?
Those are three terms for the same season.

As long as it doesn't involve hitting the pavement I'm all in.
If there are other BFers, wolfpack, vegavixen, cm, doing this ride then I will try my best to get there. I like riding with the wimmins. Especially if they do all the pulling. :)
 Be careful how you phrase that! :p
Gonna go sit out on my deck a bit with some black cherry Häagen-Dazs. Urm, carb-loading for my ride tomorrow while I try to even out my cycling tan just a bit.

It's just funny. I have no doubt SoCal has some great weather, but I hear some of the same complaints about the weather in the ride write-ups that we here back East b***h about. And when it gets hot, it get really hot, unless you're within a couple miles of the beach. I suppose you could go up in elevation but there doesn't seem to any shade up there so the sun just bakes.
Looks like a kool place though and you do have an active cycling community which really helps.

The Bay Area is better all the way around, IMHO. This is from someone who has lived in both places. The weather up here is at least as good, usually better. The riding, at least the road riding - well, there's no comparison, at least between the Bay Area and the LA megalopolis. (Can't speak to the San Diego scens or the Inland Empire.) It is far better up here.
Okay, flaming from ME to commence in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 . . . .

I have a friend, a 3 time Olympian, that had his body fat measured by immersion at 3.0%. His doctor was appalled and prescribed that he eat ice cream at least twice a day until his body fat came came up. So I think you are on to something, self medicating in a way.

My body fat, by the Katch and McArdle method of estimation, is about 19.5%. I think for a woman my age, and recent life experience, I'm quite ok there. ;)
I just loves me some black cherry ice cream. :D

Point taken. One dosen't need an excuse to eat ice cream. Heck, I eat a bowl of it every night. I suppose if I dropped that habit I wouldn't be stuck at 9% bf. I've been as low as 6% but got sick all the time so my current level seems right for me at my advanced age.

I'm not tryin' to lose any weight. I actually have to eat quite a bit to maintain. But I'll go to whatever level of bf my training takes me to naturally as I muscle up. I am lightweight but rather lean and muscular, especially in the legs. I'm starting some upper body lifting tonight. Just some toning stuff I used to do, which I didn't need to do for four years due to my other "weightlifting." But eight months out, I'm losing the upper-body def I had. And I don't like that. :(

Judging by your pictures, 19.5% must be an average of you and the industrial size bucket of lard you happened to be carrying at the time. ;)

Upper body toning exercises are great for helping with comfort on the bike. Make sure to add some core strength work too.

Yeah, that's part of the plan. I actually had six-packs from the lifting side-to-side I used to do. They are fadin'. Upper-body strength is still there, just losing the tone a bit. I'm about to pull my last spacer, BTW. Have never yet had back/arm/neck pain related to riding.

You are so light that supporting your upper body on the bike may never be an issue. You may find though as you increase distance on the bike that fit will need to be re-addressed. It's when the rides get into the 5-6 hour range that I have some discomfort. Perhaps that won't be a problem for you.

I just went riding and it was very windy, so I thought humm this could be fun, I turned around and had a tail wind and it was about a 2mile stretch all flat, this guy on a motocycle comes right next to me and stays there, after a while I turn and look at him, he says " YOU"RE GOING 25 MPH!!!"
I said "I KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!"":D :D
if only I could do that with a head wind

If riding longer distances should become a problem re comfort, I have a professional fitter that I can go see in Kannapolis. He used to pack up shop and travel with the pro tours. I trust his fitting, but am so far doing well with the roadbike. When I get my TT bike, I'll have him fit it to me.

Those same sails, though, can be the bane of my existance when the wind is pointed at anything other than my butt.

my knee saga continues...just back from seeing the PT...he seems to think that it's not an issue of tendonitis, but more of a bursitis problem - specifically: Pes anserine bursitis and really tight hamstrings.
i did stretches for the hammies, qroin, and hip flexors(?), anyways, 3 different stretches to do 2 or more times a day and the more often i can do them the better it will be. might also benefit from strengthening the VMO muscle of the quads. got a nice massage on the medial side of my knee, some electrical stimulation with cold therapy too. guess i can be a gym rat for a few weeks...elliptical and walking are all i can do as of now. will get me started on their exercise bike in a week or so...
PT says i need to do treatment 3x week for at least a week and no riding yet :(. he said that it will probably take at least 2 months before i'm a 100% but, i will be back to riding in june. it wont be long distances, i'm gonna have to work up to that, but will probably be able to do rides of 15-20mi to begin with and go from there.
it's not really what one would consider a major injury, but as the PT dude says, "yes, it is a major injury when it affects your life and you can't do the thing(s) you enjoy". still...gotta get this fixed, not riding is so depressing.
dammit. can i have a hug??

Unfortunately, I only cook for two, and then I eat both servings. :o
Now, it's off for the HD that I never got around to eating earlier, and then off to the store for some sea scallops (to grill for lunch tomorrow) and some red wine, per earlier discussion in various threads. :)

HOLY HILLs, Batman! We just did a trial run of the mountain we will be using for our hill climb time trial series....2 miles doesn't sound very long, but it is a mean little 2 miles. Sorry, for all you stats-geeks, I do not have any clue what the percent grade is or the elevation or the wind chill factor or the angle at the apex of the corners or the blah blah blah was. All I know is that it is steep, then you turn sharp and go up steeper, then you climb a bit more and go around another blind corner and climb some more. the view coming down was spectacular, though; I LOVE living here!

Still, could be fun. I'll check my calendar. Where exactly is that? Near Hicktown?
today was my first day at work at a bike shop. i met a beautiful girl who just moved here from michigan (like yours truly) & she needed a chain for her bike & i helped her out. i was really nervous around her because i thought she was so sweet & cute. after my breakup with the ex, i've had no seeds to talk to girls at all.... anyways, she came back to the shop about an hour later & said "i thought i'd be brave & introduce myself & give you my number." getting digits on my ex's birthday... awesomeness. now, as per swingers, i'm wondering how long until i call this "beautiful baby."
