Only three drives in one of your computers?! :p Okay, so my iMac only has one drive. But my semi-retired computer from when I was in college has 3 drives, and I would expect you to beat that! A 4 GB 5400 RPM SCSI drive on the built-in fast SCSI (10 MB/s max) chain (along with a SCSI Zip drive and a CD-ROM). Two 4.5 GB 7200 RPM drives connected to an UltraWide SCSI card (40 MB/s max). There were four fans dedicated to simply cooling those two 7200 RPM drives. All three drives are AV-rated. I have room for four more internal drives. Five if I get rid of the Zip drive. But I'd have to swap out the old drives for newer ones that are a bit less power hungry and that generate a bit less heat. And even then I'm not sure my power supply could spin all of them up concurrently.
Back then, I was thrilled to see sustained reads and writes of about 30 MB/s on my scratch partition. (The outermost 20% of my 7200 RPM drives in a RAID 0 config.) Of course, nowadays, a single drive can easily beat that. And the built-in external SCSI port (not sure if it's fast SCSI or just SCSI at 5 MB/s) is connected to a scanner. Probably the most wasteful use of a SCSI port short of not using it. :p
Heh its pretty hard to get more then 4 internal hard drives on a computer. You can start to really kill your bus speed and power

Heh its pretty hard to get more then 4 internal hard drives on a computer. You can start to really kill your bus speed and power
Bus speed? On a modern machine, no big deal. (On my old machine, the problem is that a 32-bit 33 MHz PCI bus tops out at 133 MB/s. I can add all the ports I want and I'll still max out at 133 MB/s.) SCSI320 tops out at 320 MB/s. That should be good for 4 drives (as far as sustained bandwidth goes, anyway) unless you're using something like Seagate's 15,000 RPM Cheetah X15. Use a dual-SCSI320 PCI-E card, and you have bandwidth for 8. Power? Yeah, that's a slight issue when spinning up the drives. But not if you spin them up at different times and leave them spinning.
As for whether it's worth it, probably not. Probably better to run two really fast internal drives (RAID 0 or RAID 1 depending on one's needs) and then connect to an external hardware RAID unit (thus offloading the processor overhead, allowing one to run RAID 3 or RAID 5 without seriously tying up the processors) via Fibre Channel.

Heh those dual scsi 320 pci-e cards are expensive as ****. I would be looking at spending nearly 2k on a hard drive setup probalby.
Sounds like y'all have some fun weekend plans. :) peregrine, if you want some beer at 5, just come to our happy hour for free beer and pizza.
Speaking of which, I should go get some work done so that I can enjoy the said happy hour.
