Foo - Whatcha doin'?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
i quit my job at the restaurant. basically what happened was that each shift i work i have to complain to the management that i'm not getting tables. everyone else will have multiple tables & i will be standing there without any. well tonight i went an hour during friday's dinner rush without a single table. everyone else was busy with many tables while i was helping them out. when it came to 45 minutes i said to myself "they have 15 mins to seat me or else i'm gone." well, i'm gone. my one manager acted like a manager should & tried to calmly talk me out of it while the other was screaming at me in the office. he said that he had no control over the amount of customers who walked through the door & i told him that my issue wasn't with how many customers came in to the restaurant but with how they were never being sat in my sections & that he has control over. enough is enough.

G'night, everybody! :) <wavin' and slinkin' off to bed>
Just got home from dinner. I was daydreaming about a SoCal girl, but now that I'm in Foo... well, my mind's now on a Foo girl.
I was wondering over dinner what percentage of the tab the wait staff at my favorite restaurant tips to the bartenders, bus boys, and hostesses. Not really important, but I was a bit curious what exactly my favorite wait staff are getting from me when I tip them. I've found out that they tip the other staff a flat percentage based on the total tab during their shift, but I don't know what that percentage is. Oh well, whatever.

Oh, I tip my favorite wait staff VERY well. Otherwise, it's not fair to them that they're serving a table of one and giving me a disproportionate amount of attention anyway, never mind that they often comp a good portion of my drinks and sides. I also tend to tip them a flat amount, regardless of how much I order. It's not their fault when I order something cheap, and just because I ordered steak doesn't mean they deserve more tip. (My favorites aside, I do generally tip as a percentage.) Oddly, because they tip their staff a fixed percentage of the tab, this means the less I order, the more their pockets get padded. So there's no perverse incentive for them to get me to order more, though they always encourage it anyway (but the extra stuff often gets comp'd).
I was daydreaming about a SoCal girl, but now that I'm in Foo... well, my mind's now on a Foo girl.Well. Aren't you the indecisive fella?
:p

How hard is it for a roadie who habitually coasts downhill and who habitually downshifts way too much on climbs to learn to ride a fixie? I've always been intrigued by the possibility of riding a fixie, but I think certain habits may be too hard to break.

How hard is it for a roadie who habitually coasts downhill and who habitually downshifts way too much on climbs to learn to ride a fixie? I've always been intrigued by the possibility of riding a fixie, but I think certain habits may be too hard to break.I used to coast all the time on my old bike. I just forced myself to not coasting while riding. Over time my legs got used to not coasting which made it simpler for me to ride a fixed gear. Well, if you want to ride a fixed gear bike and you put your mind to it then you can. It didn't take me that long to get used to it.
Maybe I'll give it a try if I move to a less hilly area for a postdoc. I had thought about getting a fixie, but then I realized that 95+% of my riding isn't really conducive to riding a fixie. Yeah, roadfix does our hilly Glendora Mountain Road group rides on his fixie, but he's crazy.
I think if you rode fixed, you wouldn't have a whole hell of a lot of choice but to break some of those habits. ;)

the climbing would not be bad, i imaging the downhills would be tricky
The climbing would suck. I have no leg muscles. I'm Mr. Chicken Legs. :o When I'm pulling a group and trying to go hard, my cadence jumps up to about 110-120 RPM to compensate for lack of leg strength. :o Downhills, yeah, the big downhills that I enjoy now wouldn't be so enjoyable. (Of course, I wouldn't make it up in the first place.)
the climbing would not be bad, i imaging the downhills would be trickyGet a pair of those little stubby bar-ends that clamp onto flat bars, and mount them high on the fork. Once you come to the crest of a hill, take your feet off the pedals, and rest them on the pegs as you go flying down the hill. Not very aero, and you'd have to come to a complete stop to get your feet back on the pedals in order to go again, but I bet it'd be fun. :D

Anyway, I should get to bed soon. If I'm to start my first climb of Palomar on Sunday at 5:15 AM, I should get lots of sleep tonight since I probably won't be getting lots of sleep tomorrow night.

One more thing, have any of you gone on a bike ride, came home, relaxed a bit, then realized, "hey, my knee (or leg) hurts" and found out that you have a rather large bruise? This just happened to me. I found that my left knee has a bruise from, what I think, skidding.
