Foo - Whatcha doin'?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Yes.

Roofers are finally done with the new roof! Now I'm loading up my bike stuff for a 80 mile ride on the BRP tomorrow starting early in the morning. I guess it will have near 7500-8000' of climbing. Probably about 5 hours ride time.

One other riding buddy and me. We leave at 7:30. We're riding the SEBF ride coming up and adding the section we did in May on the SEBF ride. This is one of those rides where I wish I had a compact crank. I have done it all in my double but I think I'll take the triple tomorrow just to be a little more kind to my knees. I had a hard ride yesterday and I could stand to spin an easier gear.

You southeastern US BikeForums members go diving, too? Now I'm really jealous. We got invited to a weekend of fun by a lake outside of Las Vegas by an honorary SoCal member, but we didn't go diving. See, even my avatar's green with envy now.

Back from work, got a few days off now. :)
I made hamburgers for dinner on my new George Foreman Lean Mean Fat Reducing Grilling Machine. They were ok, but they left me feeling unsatisfied. I need fruit. I think I'm becoming a vegetarian, or a fruitarian. Tomorrow night, I'll try making some grilled chicken on it.

Cool. You should head out this way, too. You could partake of some of our favorite ultrahilly century routes.
Pie Ride (yes, there's a pie stop)
107 miles
10,500 vertical feet
(We've also done a variant that's 80 miles, with 11,000 vertical feet. Just an out and back on the hilliest 40 mile section.)
Breathless Agony
114 miles
12,000 vertical feet
Baldy Challenge
106 miles
10,000 vertical feet (most of it in a 30 mile stretch, 2200 ft crammed into 4.6 miles of climbing)
some more classics I haven't done before
Mulholland Century
Heartbreak Century
Angeles Crest Century
Century routes with 6000-8000 feet of climbing are way too numerous to mention. Even the relatively flat coastal centuries end up with about 4000 feet of climbing thanks to the rollers and hills along the coast. You would love it out here.
Nice looking wheels, ms.gio.

OH, cool! I'm excited about this ride. It should be a good one. I hope you get lots of people to show up; the more the merrier!
Yes, Wolfie, I was in Texas. First week in Austin on vacation to visit with family and the second week in Dallas for a conference. Had a great time (even with all the durn rain) and bought my first pair of cowboy (girl?) boots....woooot!

Oh, come on! The SoCal BikeForums girls are turning out in droves to do Breathless Agony next year. Three of them (maybe more, if I'm forgetting anyone) did the ride this year. All of them completed it faster than I did. (Admittedly, I was having a bad day, but two of them would have easily beat me anyway.) Several more are training for it for next year. You said you wanted to ride with the SoCal women, right? Well, we look to potentially have a bunch of them riding at Breathless Agony next year. With so many BikeForums members doing the ride, it will be a big party out there. You know you want to be there. And you have until next May to get ready. Just sustain 1800 vertical feet per hour for six hours (pretty slow, but you must do it without fading, even at altitude) and do a bit of flat ground riding and descending in between, and you'll make it to the top within the time cutoffs. Do 2200+ vertical feet per hour, and you'll find plenty of BikeForums members to ride with. (There's several below that speed, too, but over a long ride, they tend to get spread out.)

I just got back with the wheel set and they're gorgeous. They're Machined walled, TI Grey Deep V's laced to black Formula hubs with black spokes. I  them. Now I need to get the tubes and the tires then I'll be set. :D I'll be getting the tubes and the tires hopefully on Wednesday.

So what was your ride time and total time for the ride last year. It looks like about a 7-7.5 hour ride to me.

I was riding faster during our practice run, but during the actual organized ride, I took 10:20 on the bike, about 11:20 total. (If you look up our reported times, they're much faster because we're reporting to the last time check at mile 72, at the summit. The last 42 miles is mostly downhill and not counted toward one's official ride time for this ride.) I figure on a good day, I should be about an hour faster. And that would make me fast enough to comfortably hang with the main BikeForums pack but nowhere near the fast BikeForums riders. Our fastest riders take a bit over 7 hours.

Well you never know until you do it. The ride I'm doing tomorrow I usually do from town. It is then 108 miles and 10500' of climbing and last year it took 7:30 ride and 7:50 total. Like Breathless Agony the last 25 miles are mostly down. But the max elevation is only 6050'. I would expect the climb up to Onix Summit would be slower at that elevation.

Just got in from a "night out" with the family, well the step-dad and step-brother at least. Just grabbed some dinner and went to see the new Harry Potter movie, but we were about an hour early for the movie so we killed time at the arcade... played through Time Crisis (I think 3) :) It's been a while since I've done that, only had to continue once :D
But now I should be heading to bed... back to work tomorrow and I've got my group ride tomorrow night! 'night Foo.

That's a pretty reasonable pace. And yes, the climb to Onix Summit is painful. Somehow, 4-5% grade just doesn't seem the same at elevation. (On the flip side, descending at altitude rocks! With minimal air resistance, one can hit very high speeds on rather shallow grades. :D ) Anyway, big ride or not, you definitely should join us for a ride sometime if you can make your way out here. No matter what length and what amount of climbing you feel like, we can find something for you out here.
As for the original topic of the thread... I'm wrapping up work, after having grabbed a quick dinner at the cafeteria. Not crazy full, but gotta save a bit of room for ice cream when I get home. :)

I couldn't finish my ride today, had to call in the support car.:o :(
I got in more than 50 miles, and just couldn't go any further. Too hot and not enough water or food.
But I did end up with about 5 pounds of okra, 3 cantaloupes, a cucumber, and a tomato for $3.:D

Well, I guess I can admit to being stupid this morning. I thought my FD had crapped out. It would not shift no matter how I moved the cable and the FD body was very difficult to move by hand. Turns out that when I put the water bottle cage on the downtube, the clamp accidently caught the FD cable and clamped it to the downtube, so no matter what I did with the shifter, the wire never moved at the FD.
I have to say, some times I think I'm brain dead.
