Situation seems to be getting no worse, so jyo's plan for me will have to be put on the back burner as I sit around bored. Probably will meet up with DaveSANYYZ for dinner since he's cooped up and bored too. Out east of my parents, though, as shown on the LA Times...

I'm right there with you...few things can be as disruptive to ones life as a fire destroying your home and all its contents. I hope no one else gets hurt in these fires.

Not impossible... last I heard is a bit over 500k people in SD county and over 700k in SoCal. But with about 350,000 homes evacuated in SD, a million isn't out of the question.

They can. But we've got about 40 helicopters dropping water already, so the big planes will be carrying flame retardant chemical mixtures. Each C-130 drop evidently can cover a 1/4 mile section of fire. Our SoCal tankers are out of commission at the moment (due to certification issues) so we're reliant on the six other ones across the country. And one DC-10 jumbo jet converted into a supertanker. And several dozen smaller planes. And several dozen helicopters.

All this of course is shared throughout the masses of fires burning in SoCal, with resources going at any given moment where they are most needed.

Have you ever seen how the C-130s skim the water off the surface of a lake? Quite incredible. Those very planes practice in my area flying low level over the mountains. I've seen one fly literally just a 100' or so above the ridge.
