Introductions - Brisbane, Australia

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hi all
Thanks RonH for the welcome message. I'm pretty much addicted to cycling, both road and mountain bikes. I ride an Alchemy road bike and an old Avanti hardtail mountain bike. I especially enjoy annoying certain female friends by talking about pushbikes "ALL THE TIME" ha ha!

Welcome aboard! It's been a while since anyone else from this part of the world posted. I've been getting lonely! :D
G'day Chris. I'm glad I've stumbled across this site, looks like there's a lot of helpful people around. I'll definately be nosing around a bit more!

Read it in a mirror.
Hi all
I haven't really commuted anywhere else Colin, so it's hard for me to compare. I suppose like everywhere there're bikeways that go nowhere, with signs telling you to dismount all the time and with people walking their dogs on them that you have to give way to. I've found motorists aren't too bad, especially out in the western suburbs where they give you loads of room. I'd avoid the northside though.

Yeah this is something I have wondered about Brisbane, how are the bikepaths in comparison to the roads (in terms of using them on the commute). Am I to read into your reply that I may be better off sticking to the roads ??
Just as an aside, what kinda bike do you use to get you to B ?
Thanks again for the info.

I've done some riding around Brisbane (I often ride up there to visit family that I have at Fortitude Valley). My experience of Brisbane bike paths is that they are a complete waste of space. I don't even use them anymore. It's straight across the Story Bridge on the road the whole time.
Chris is pretty much right there Colin. But don't be put off commuting by it. I just read where you will be commuting on the general board, and I think you'll have a good run most of the way. I just rode along most of the route you would take to uni this arvo, and it's mostly a nice wide bike lane on the road. You're gonna be sailing past loads of stationary cars!
I ride an alchemy road bike, and an Avanti Montari mountain bike. The road bike is fantasic but limited in it's ability to bunny-hop gutters and so-on (tends to 'endo' severely!)

endo ? I will have to show my ignorance here, what's that mean ?
Nice to know I've got a good route to use though, and judging by the way the other thread is going, might even be able to get a bit of mountain biking done on the weekends.

Don't worry Colin, I'm probably just showing my age! I don't know if they still call rear wheel wheelies endos, but we did in the 80's. I've nearly embarrassed myself a few times while attempting to lift the back wheel over a little bump at some traffic lights and overdoing it somewhat frightfully. I keep forgetting it's not a mountain bike!
