A freecoaster works by having a threaded driver, a knurled clutch threaded onto it and a conical hub body. As you pedal forward, the clutch is threaded on the driver against the hub body, engaging it. As you pedal backward, the driver threads the clutch away from the hub shell until it bottoms out, then the driver spins freely...the hub now spins without resistance in either direction. In a coaster BRAKE, instead of spinning freely once the clutch bottoms out the driver engages brake shoes inside the hub (like a drum brake) and stops the shell. There is a point in all coaster brakes where the wheel will spin freely either direction like a freecoaster...the dead spot between where the clutch disengages and the brake shoes engage. Try it on a $70 kid's bike sometime.
