General Cycling Discussion - Man do I like snow.

Crashed hard again today again, but bailed mid air, I'm fine because there was 6" of snow to pad my fall, bike is fine as well. Did the snow ever save you?

Only when I am snowboarding in someplace other than SEC Michigan

I was saved from going to work by a huge snowstorm that dumped almost an inch on Atlanta.

I would normally say you aren't that far away (about 13 hour drive) but we don't have snow either...I would be worried if I was remotely concerned :)

When we have an occasional dusting, people run out and take pics. The kids make snowballs and put them in the freezer for science projects.

actualy, yes. I spent a winter in Denmark once with sub zero temps and snow and loved every minute of it. You see, I love extream cold or heat. Give me sub zero or 110+f and I am a happy cyclist.
One of my most memerable rides was up in Mammoth during a blizard.

Actually I like snow, too, for skiing not cycling!

dirtbikedude, finally another one of my kind! I love the cold(I detest heat though).

I've always been thought of as the freak. While most people are fighting their way into Florida I can't wait to leave(10th generation native and there is no getting used to the heat). My lifelong dream is to move to Alaska. My idea of paradise is not scorching hot beaches, but forests and snow covered mountains.

Yes, I have actually experienced winter several years ago in West Virginia and was absolutely enthralled with it.

We never get snow days off in the snowy midwest. Snow is an expected part of life and we are expected to deal with it.

Around here if it snows two inches, people start calling in to work saying they can't make it in. I'm thinking they just don't want to come to work. :)

Oh ya! Up here in Canada the snow saves me everyday. Everyday I crawl out of my igloo and if it has snowed enough I have to strap chains on my mountain bike to get through the 6 foot snow drifts.

We don't get very much snow in the South of England...shame, because I love cycling offroad in the snow.

i worked in Houston for 2 years (uh, horrible) and when the FORECAST called for snow flurries, EMPLOYERS would cancel work or tell people to go home "because of the dangerous roads"... it was ridiculous. at the time i had a 50 mile commute (never again!) and i drove into work and there wasn't even ice on the bridges and only snow flurries that melted on the ground (was maybe 30F) and i got to the office and all the guys from the north (Ohio, Wisconsin, etc.. Texas has many northern transplants) were there wondering why all the Texans were not... the drive home was dry! in Dallas it snows say 1-4 times a year and they usually cancel school classes about 2-3 times per year (as a kid when the forecast was for "snow" i would wake up at 5am and listen to the radio for school closing)

oh yeah, i like snow too -- although not super cold -- much below 10F/-12C i get cold hands and feet -- but i enjoy living somewhere with an actual winter (Massachusetts, Munich) where we have snow on the ground for at least a few weeks a year...

ok, who wants to make me a deal on a set of bike chains? Not that it ever snows here anymore, but I hate being grounded just because my treads pack up before I leave the drive. The only other riders I even see around here are fair weather roadies that put it in the shed about a month ago...it's lonely being the village idiot but someone's gotta remind Bubba of what a bicycle looks like thru the winter months. Local shop might be able to find some but he's really overpriced.

What's reasonable?

Get yourself a set of Nokian 106 studded snow tyres.

Get a set of inexpensive tyres, some duct tape, and a bunch of screws about an inch long. Then, set up shop and spend a little while making yourself a pair of serious snow tyres.

If it was only snow here I wouldn't mind. It's the ice from freezing rain and windy chinook days that I can't stand. Icy conditions take the fun out of normal daily activities. Bring on the snow and lot's of it!
