The seas were bumpy like a washing machine yesterday, due to the southerly and westerly winds we've been experiencing the past few days. Our regular NE trades were starting to come back, and this only made matters worse. This type of sea is the most challenging as it tosses the boat around every which way, and we're talking about a boat that is 19' long and weighs 22.5lb.
Gotta train right? So I launch the boat, and take a leisurely slow warm-up paddle out towards the open sea. So about 15 min. later I hit the wind line and the bumpy seas, and I'm thinking about either cutting my 18mi. route in half, or going back inside and work on flat water intervals. Decided to go the full route.
About 200m from my turnaround point, I see for a brief moment the huge tail of a full grown Humpback. Just the tail, nothing else So now I'm stoked, alert, exited--scanning the the ocean for another view. Suddenly 100m out, there it is! A calf, a small calf that had come up for air. I saw the arc of its back with its little dorsal fin come up three times and of course, the spray of his blow hole. That's it. A mother and its calf. That made my day.
P.S. At no time did I violate any rules concerning the distance we need to maintain away from these whales.
