Cyclocross - anyone put a rack on their poprad? how?

i have an '04 poprad (the black one) it has eyelets at the chainstay/quick release area, but none on the seat stays (is there a point to that?). wondering what system, if any, people have used to mount a rack for panniers. i tried to mount the rack today but it wasn't happening...

also bonus question: is it possible to put long reach calipers on the bike instead of the canti 4's?

I had an 02 Proprad back in 04 and I was able to put a rear rack and Vbrakes with a travel agent on mine. Not sure about standard long reach calipers. But I did notice the other day the Pauls Components has a long reach center pull calipers brake that can be mounted on Canti posts. Those should work fine.

I have the same question about a rack.

I found a rack, The red rock or white rock that mounts to the lower eyelets and attaches to the canti bosses.

I would like to see some pictures of this type of rack mounted to a poprad.

That is acually the rack I used on my Proprad. the Red Rock was a real solid rack and could haul a ton of stuff.

My GF had an 04 and you can put a regular rack on it. They make these little rubberized steel loops that fit around the seat stay and you run a bolt through them and the rack. Just ask for something like that at your LBS and they will know what you are talking about.

i tried the rubber clippy things. maybe it the other hardware that came with the rack was just bad sizing for this bike. um...or i'm must a bad, bad, bike mechanic (true). i bought the White Rock rack from OMM. hopefully i can get frustrated and mess up the brakes while trying to install it when it gets here in a few days! awesome!

Those Paul center pulls require the canti posts to be brazed on in a special location, not where they'd normally go. Unless the frame was built with that brake in mind they can't be used.



venting begins here:
it came with a double in front and a 12-32 (ish) in the back which is fine for a road bike and maybe even for cross races (never done one), but for the offroad types of rides i wanted to do (the mountains mostly in and around LA) it was impossible gearing.

well, that's not really what the bike was designed for :)


and the brakes. the brakes sucked when i test rode it but i just thought they'd adjust them and it'd be okay. but i get the bike after the last "tune-up" before you take the bike home and they still sucked.

i have a sneaking suspicion that there is a large number of shop mechanics that don't know how to properly setup a canti brake. at least around these parts a lot of the shop mechanics i see are just kids* and probably don't get to deal with them a lot.

*i feel funny saying that considering i'm only 23

Please upload some pictures of your rack mounted on the Poprad. I am thinking of getting one myself.

yes. theyre there for fenders.

I'd like to try to revive this topic a bit. I'm currently trying to find a rack to fit on my 07 Disc Poprad. I already tried working with a cheap Planet Bike commuter rack, but found that it isn't really possible to use a rack with vertical or near vertical mounting/load bearing posts. There's a weld spot that gets in the way. So I need to find a rack that has some alternative mounting method. Does anyone have any ideas? Has anyone actually mounted a rack on their disc Poprad that would like to share a brand and how they did it? Pictures would be great too if possible.

The QR Adaptor may assist in mounting a rack at the bottom attachment point.

On my 04 Poprad, I adapted the racks top mounting brackets by bending them a bit to fit to my seat clamp bolt. It allowed me to get the rack level, and is very sturdy.

Haven't done it yet to mine ('07). Man, I had to get out the framing square, and it looks like I might be able to mount mine OK in the standard way-not positive yet, that dropout/seatstay weld is very close to being directly above the braze-on.

Solutions I've seen for similiar problems, other than the QR mount already mentioned:
1. Use a stack of washers and a longer bolt to space the rack stays wide enough.
2. Topeak makes a rack that has an "L" shape at the bottom, pointing inward (spacing the rack stays wider). Basically mimics the washer-stacking technique, but looks better.
3. Axiom (and maybe others) make a rack where the bottom part of the rack frame is bent to an "L" shape, pointing forward. This is to space the rack rearward to avoid disc calipers (which shouldn't be a problem in this case anyways), this should also avoid the weld you're talking about.
4. Seatpost rack.

Out of curiosity, what size is your poprad? Mine's a 55cm.

Oh- are you getting any seatpost slippage? Mine is slipping, both the stock post and the Thomson I have in there now. Tried a 27.4 just to check, but 27.2 is definitely the correct size (that's what my calipers say, too.)

I actually have not experienced seat slippage. On the contrary, after getting it back from it's first full tune up, I noticed the wrenchers had left the seat about 2" higher than usual, and there was a little ring of rust around the seat post. I was a little surprised by that and am now considering taking it apart and squirting in some of that frame saver that I've heard about.

The OMM rack would be best.. I know the Blackburn EX-1 comes with the extra hardware for mounting without rack bosses..

+1 for the OMM racks. Very solid mounting at the QRs and canti studs. The rack itself is very strong and light. The only drawback I see is fixing a flat tire with a load on the rack.

About the OMM racks, how much time does it take to install? can it be put on and taken off pretty easily/quickly?

My 2006 Poprad has a threaded boss on the seat-stay bridge.

Would that not work? I used to have a Blackburn (decades ago) that could mount either to outboard seat-stay eyelets (specifically for racks) or to the center boss on the seat-stay bridge (used by fender mounts).

I had trouble getting the seatstay mount to not interfere with the brake cable, so I just attached it to the seatstaywith a clamp.

I wish I had researched the bike more, because I'm highly unsatisfied with the lack of mounts (ie. no chainstay bridge for the rear fender).

Well, it'd be easier to take the rack and fenders off for weekend frivolity if there were a few more attachment points. As it stands, I'll have to remove a clamp (and the paint is pretty delicate).

You are right, though. I probably compromised utility because I was so drawn to the quality steel frame and great looks. Now I've got Cinderella scrubbing the chimney...

The OMMR is the best design for the canti mount racks. Also, Performance has one that mounts to the seatpost and lower eyelets. I bought a performance that is just a seat mount and has the side bag mounts for commuting...works very well. I will be going for the old man mountain rack when I start doing some serious touring in the next couple of years.

To update this,

I got an 08 Poprad disc and was able to mount a Tubus Cargo rack into the lower eyelets with the standard hardware. On the rack is some spare mounting points for fenders so I don't lose those. Up top they mount in with seat-stay brackets. It's all pretty seamless and the thing is rated for 90lbs.

I don't have the heart to put a front rack on however, even if the carbon forks have holes to mount in to.

i have a 08 poprad w/ canti brakes. i mounted a topeak qr beam mtx rack on it. it clamps onto the seat post. it also has optional side frames, but i havent used those yet.

I'm also searching for a rear rack that will work with my '07 Poprad Disc.

I have tried the Blackburn EX-1 but it is not wide enough to work.

He used the Tubus Logo rack, Tubus lower mounting rack mounting kit, and the Tubus stay mounting clamps. From a previous post it also looks like a Tubus Cargo rack might work as well.

Hey, I have a '08 disc that I am getting a rack for. Abbynemmy has some pictures of a rack on the same frame in this thread: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=418399

You can bend the included hardware and mount it to the seatstay crossbar (as explained in that thread).

Abbynemmy used a Delta Mega Universal Rack, which is a lot cheaper than tubus racks, but not quite as strong.

As a word of caution, I ordered mine online and the place mistakenly sent me the Delta Mega SuperSherpa instead, which doesn't have enough clearance. I'm working on getting them to send me the one I ordered and then I should be all set.

Just for an update,

After talking with Wayne form thetouringstore.com (http://thetouringstore.com) I decided to go with a Tubus Logo rear rack for my 2007 Lemond Poprad Disc. I purchased the lower rack mounting kit and stay mounting kit (18mm) as well. It ended up being a great fit for my bike and I am completely happy with the setup.
