while I am sure that someone has ridden a disk on the street...the velodrome or a non-windy TT course are better places to use it.

Disks are none to perform as sails when hit with a crosswind..could be pretty ugly riding in the streets.

How much did you pay for it? Where did you get it?

um...disc on the street. Yeah...let's see. How does no sound? I have seen a few (usually the disc applique over a spoked wheel), but they are not the most durable wheels to have on pavement riddled with potholes and the like. Personally, if that is a carbon fiber (or other like materials) lay-up over styrofoam, you are asking for problems with evryday street use. I would reserve that wheel for the velodrome. It is a beaut.

I just looked again, after all was said and done, it was $98, I won the auction for $76.

where did I find it? It was a lucky ebay hit. I was looking for cranks.

deep v rims are bad enough in crosswinds, forget about a disc on the street.

it was quite windy this morning and i was riding down a street close to and parallel to the river. you had calm air on the blocks, but severe cross winds at every intersection. throws off the hands-free riding.

Be careful with it. I came across an old CMXL disc wheel a while back and it was scary. You've got to remember that not only is the wheel ancient, but it was built when carbon fiber was new technology. Mine was flexy as hell and I was terrified of it letting go in a corner. No good.

That said, the sound of a disc wheel rumbling down the street is pretty awesome. They definitely have a distinct sound.

I have done some research, there isn't that much info, but
the wheel seems to be carbon fiber with an aluminum skin, just like a fighter jet

Actually, I saw a guy riding a disk wheel (not fixed) down Market @ 12th or so on Friday evening.

Ran into Dolface just after, meant to mention it, forgot.

So someone has done it...and if I had a camera phone, you'd have a pic!

I will be doing a similar thing down here in Santa Clara. I have an old disc of about the same age, and am not sure if it will be stiff enough for my fat azz.

I am going to ride it over to a schoolyard and try to break it....figure I would rather have it die under me by myself then out on the track and take others down.

There is a messenger in NYC who rides with one on his work bike. He also has about 20 pounds of different colored tape all over the bike.

Personally, I think he is crazy. But everytime I see him he says hi or nods.

I saw a track bike locked to a light pole here in Brooklyn and it has a zipp disk rear wheel. Its crazy to see something like that on the street.
