I thought the car-free/car-lite people would get a kick out of this.

So, my girlfriend and I live in different apartments by ourselves about 3 miles apart or so. I always prefer to ride my surly over to her apartment because I'm being as car-lite as I can be. I rode over to her apartment at night two days ago and yesterday morning it was cold and rainy (she gets upset when I ride when conditions are nasty so I just let her give me a ride now) so I just left my bike at her house and after I went with her to run some errands with her. We then stayed over at my apartment last night while my bike is still residing at her apartment.

This morning I go with my girlfriend over to her apartment so I can ride my bike back. Now there is snow on the road this morning so she doens't want me to ride so we put the bike in her car to drive to my place. But we forgot a book for a test I have tuesday so we have to go back to her place. On the way up her driveway her dumb landlord is going about 10-15mph around a blind curve on the ice/snow pacd. Needless to say my girlfriend stopped and he locked up his brakes and hit my girlfriend's car with all 4 tons of the dodge truck the guy is driving. My girlfriend's kia is not driveable so now I get to bike back to my place! I bike to my apartment and get my car for my girlfriend so she can use it untill all the insurance stuff is worked out.

It's just funny as hell to me because the reason I wasn't biking was because she didn't want me to. But in the end my bike got us out of the jam and now I get to be car-free. It was great getting home and realizing I didn't have the crutch of a car anymore. I can't wait untill I can do it for real (hopefully in Eugene). Just thought the story would be enjoyable. I'm sorry I'm not a very astute writer and my train of thought is sometimes hard to follow.

Congratulations on this... interesting... series of events. Perhaps she will see the value of bicycles and become car lite herself...

Don't worry, it was very clear. :)

I wish she would, but she's just not comfortable enough on a bike yet. I will spend as much time with her as she needs, I just think her car is too easy for her. She's a vegetarian and doesn't bug me that I'm not, so I don't give her any crap in return. I think when the weather warms up she'll come around.

The main problem is that she hears me vent about bad motorists so she's scared. I wish I would have just vented on the forums so she could go out and realize how amazing riding can be even if there are some jackasses on the roads.

So, if you would have took your bike like you originally wanted to, and not took the car to be safe, you would have not had the accident?

Yeah, that's irony.
