Commuting - A Perfect Cycle (apologies to george Clooney)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

With apologies to George Clooney

A Perfect Storm is one of my favourite movies and I especially like the speech GC makes to Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio at the start about why he loves what he does.

So, as a cyclist………….

“ You switch on your tail light and switch on your head light. Click into the pedals and, casting a wave to your wife at the window, you head off. Easy at first, low gears, feeling the blood pumping into your leg muscles.

At the bottom of the hill you settle back in the saddle for the climb, shouting a greeting to the newspaper boy on his rounds. Speed’s building now, and you’re warming up.

As you turn onto the open road you are alone in the dark, heading towards the rising sun.

Onto the big ‘ring, settling into a cadence, a glance at your computer shows you’re cruising now. You can feel the wind rushing through the vents in your helmet and past your ears.

Breath becoming steady, endorphins flowing, you could do this all day.

You’re a cyclist. That’s all that counts”

Sometimes in the rain it feels like I'm drowning but thankfully not. :)

Then suddenly, there is a honk, you glance back only to see a large pickup towing a much too wide trailer at too fast a speed bearing down on you like a giant motorized rake, the trailer sweeps over you like a giant wave in a perfect storm......

Hmmmm. Now that WOULD be a scary movie wouldn't it, although I guess that would be called the perfect Hazard instead of cycle though wouldn't it.

That actually happened here in Maine a couple of years ago. A fully loaded logging truck came around a corner too fast...saw a biker...honked, but could not stop or turn sharp enough....his trailer took out the biker, killing him instantly. There was no bike lane on this particular road and it is by far one of the most dangerous roads to ride on due to this and the high number of logging trucks which use it.

I don't know. Ye try tae bring a wee bit o' kultyure to the board and they ruin it wi' visions o' logging trucks.

I must say that I feel safer on the logging truck laden road than I did during my week trolling around Edinburgh late last spring. I could not get used to the looking the opposite way when crossing streets. It was nice, however, to see all the bike commuters.
