i've never seen this setup before. does this slide down the crank arm to remove? is there some kinda of flat part on the backside of the crank that the chainring bolts onto?

Looks like the T/A's I've got. Never bothered to change the chainring cause i know I couldn't find another one like it and brilliantly enough it's damned near impossible to get the screws off because of their placement so close to crankarm/bb shell. I think the ring just slides off the back if you can get the screws off.

I.e.: take the crankarm off.

be VERY careful with those. A co-worker of mine said when he was racing track several people had all five bolts snap at once during a standing start. There's a lot of extra stress on those bolts because they're closer to the end of the lever the force is applied on.

Could be TA or Stronglight, they're nearly identical. The chainring looks to have the TA logo on it.

I.e.: take the crankarm off.

Can't be. Since there is something behind to screw the ring to, there is no chance the ring will pass it. It hass to clear the crankarm to the front.
