Advocacy & Safety - Trying to convince an easy prospect

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The SFSU "Bike Barn" is a holding pen for bikes, like a parking garage for we cyclists on campus. It's great, there is a person on duty to give out tags and numbers and gets people to sign in. As this is the first time I'm using the facilities I wanted to make friends with the staff there - maybe they can keep an eye on my ugly ride, right? Well I get to talking to a nice young lady and find out that not only does she not ride her bike to her job as the "security" for the bike barn, but she doesn't even own a bike. Upon further talking, it turns out she's afraid of biking in the city. But I told her it's not as dangerous as your average car-driving joe would have you believe and told her about the benefits (just spouting all the stuff I've seen in the forums here). She said she would consider it after hearing about all this, so I guess the chat turned out well. Also she noticed how stupid looking my commuter bike looked and will look out for it if someone else starts walking off with her :)

How do you work at a place called the "bike barn" and not ride a bike?

Cheers, Al

Work study job, maybe?

The REAL question - are you going to try and date the bike attendant?

Totally disagree. I have had some success with getting folks on their bicycles and riding.

I disagree, too, though it can certainly be difficult to get someone out of the starting blocks if they don't even own a bike. I've known a few who really got into it with a bit of coaxing. Myself, included. :)
