Hello experienced builders out there,

I am in the process of gearing up for some hobby framebuilding. Frame #2 & #3

My questions are:

1.What would be the estimated ounces of silver used in one fully lugged silver brazed frame and fork, assuming brass brazed front and rear dropouts?

2.How many frames will a 1lb jar of silver flux handle?

3.What would be the amount of brass used in a fully fillet brazed frame? (I plan on using 1/16 for tacks and 3/32 for fillets)

4. How many frames will a 1lb of brass flux handle?

I've built one Silver brazed lugged frame so far, under the tutelage of Ron Stuphin at UBI, where materials were included so I wasn't keeping tabs on how much was used. Silver is spendy stuff so i's like to get a ballpark figure for a Fred Parr order.

Thanks for your help,

Dave

PS e-richie, I'll send you a link to a blog when i start building.

I thought Fred Parr went out of business.
Anyhow if you are buying from Fred, you should ask him. He has been building longer than most and knows his products best.

Last lugged frame I did I used about 1.5 oz of 56% which included the lugged style frame ends. 1/2 lb of flux.

For fillet brazing I never kept track, I bought 5# of bronze rod (allstate #11) a decade ago and still have a couple of lbs left after building 5 bikes and fixing everything else. Flux I don't recall but,I probaly used 1/2- 3/4 lb on the last MTB frame

Fred is still around. He just updated his website.

Fred Parr's Framebuilder Mart (http://www.cycledesign.org/fmart.htm)

Here are some answers to the original questions based on my experiance. YMMV

1. Average 1 - 1.5 oz. of 56%
2. Average 1 - 2 frames with my heavy hand (http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/mnzank/detail?.dir=b943&.dnm=cd99.jpg&.src=ph)
3. Start with a pound. The stuff is cheap and that will get you through a bunch of frames.
4. I can stretch brass flux further than silver flux. I feel like I have had the same 1 lb. jar forever.

Have fun!
