Alt Bike Culture - NEW shoe/cleat design

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I am new to this site so bare with me. I know this sounds out of the blue but I get tired of trying to walk in my shoes with the huge cleats sticking out. What do you think of a design of a shoe that has the cleat built into the shoe. This is something to the effect like the new roller blade shoes that came out a few years ago haha. Do you think a shoe like this is in the making? basically have the shoe formed around the cleat where you can walk normally in the shoe?

It sounds like you are describing the SPD system.

SPD shoes tend to be walkable, but the soles do eventually wear and the cleats do eventually begin to grind on the ground as you walk. Personally, I think someone could/should design a better system for urban riders who end up walking on pavement in their clipless shoes quite a bit.
You mean like retractable cleats? Seems like it would be more trouble than it would be worth. More small parts to break, etc.

Not really. A little heavier and not as rigid. That's about it.
For people that aren't racing and don't worry about a dozen grams here or there, it's not a big trade off to be able to walk around when you get to your destination.
