So I broke my foot.

Just over two weeks ago now, the result of a stumble and fall off of the handicapped ramp in my office. They say that those who can climb mountains can still trip over curbs, and those like me who are avid rock climbers and cyclists can stumble off of handicapped ramps.

The result:
Cracked fifth metatarsil in my foot, one surgery two wire the bone together, now I'm three days into wearing my first cast for the next four weeks, followed by another for a subsequent three weeks. After that it's more surgery to remove the wires to be followed by loads of physical therapy. This all involves lots of yummy Percocit though!!!

So, has anybody else ever broken thier feet? What was the break like, how was it treated, how long did it take to heal, and what was it like getting back onto the bike? How did you pass the time?

sigh...

Since it happened at work, everything is covered by the company (and their insurance), right?

I have a similar story, but without the surgery ending. I ran cross-country and steeplechase for several years, I hike and climb recreationally, etc, and have never had problems with feet/legs. Just this November, I fell asleep on our futon couch while watching TV. I fell asleep in a weird position that cut off the blood flow to my left leg. I woke up and my entire leg was without feeling. Instead of stretching and waiting for the feeling to come back, my brain panicked, I guess. I freaked out and tried to stand up on my numb leg. Of course, it didn't support my weight. I went down like a ton of bricks, crashing into the CD tower and coffee table in the process, bringing them both down with me. I writhe on the floor for a good ten minutes. The feeling comes back and it's obvious that I screwed up my foot. Not broken, but sprained and swollen for two weeks...no walking on it. If that's not the stupidest way to injure yourself, I don't know what is. Recover quickly, jpearl. Surgery is no fun, but you'll be back in the saddle with some bedrest and some percoset. Follow your doctor's orders. That's the hardest part :(

We're still working on that. So far, everything is cool, but my mother in-law had a bad experience with the people she worked for when she was injured at work and has me proceeding with caution with the workers comp. Apparently, fraud is a factor in blue-collar workers comp causes, but my case is simple white-collar stuff. Still, I'm proceeding with it very carefully and all I want to do is heal completely, get back to work, and get back on my bike.

BTW, Texasguy, do tell me more about the shark cartilage pills. Do they do the same wonderful things as Percocet?

No, shark cartilages are not pain pills, I'm assuming thats what percocet is - it sounds like something a doctor would make up for a pain killer. I eat shark cartilage to help my joints and strengthen nails and etc because it contains minerals that the body uses to rebuild stuff like that. In fact I have a nail that is extremely soft because I stopped taking it. I took it about a yuear ago and after a few months a nail that had been soft for several years was actually strong and healthy. After 1/2+ of a year not taking it its back to its soft mellowness.
