Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - White Industries freewheels - opinions?

Are these worth the dough? Do they stand up well in nasty weather? I'm considering getting one for my future commuter.

The "dos" model looks pretty cool. They're designed to work with their double crank, but has anyone tried it with a single ring up front?

Also, has anyone tried the Trials version? Seems like 72 point of engagement would be awesome for the dirt, but that's even more $$$.

i have a regular white industries freewheel on my ss mtb. it is amazing. great engagement and has held up great, though i haven't had it too long.

the trials specific one is even better. once i get my front freewheel cranks situated for my trials bike, i'm going to get one and fix my cassette hub. chris king engagement, quality, and reliability for much less.

There are one or two of us who ride fixed and SS. I have run White Industries freewheels for two years and think they are great. I use them for my commuter and for SS cyclocross. I have never had a problem with them freezing up and they run as good as they did when I got them.

It also might be worth looking at SS cassette hubs. They basically just use a normal free hub mechanism but with a short freehub body that can only carry a single sprocket.

on-one (http://www.on-one.co.uk/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_user_op=view_page&PAGE_id=16&MMN_position=53:53) have one that is rebadged by a few others and is fairly cheap. You can probably get one for less than the white industries freewheel.

Compared to other ss freewheels I've tried on my SS mountain bike, the ENOs are definitely worth the money. I tried a Shimano, and it disintegrated on me in a matter of weeks.

I now have two ENOs (a flip-flop hub), and they are fantastic. They hold up to wet conditions, the engagement is quick and flawless. I use one to train and one to race. And the buzzing noise they make is an acquired taste (but a fun, distinct noise on the trail). If you like/want a silent freewheel, these are definitely not for you. But I doubt there's a freewheel out there that performs better.

most ss cassette hubs in that proce range only have 8-16 engagement points....doesnt really compare with a 72 point freewheel.

its like theres a swarm of bees chasing you down the trail....I had a friend with a Hadley hub on his DH bike and it roared...

I definitely want the trials FW for my mod. Lotsa engagement. I may have to put aside more time for the trials if I get the White FW.

ENO freewheel. LOVE IT! takes lots of dirty muddy sandy abuse, keeps on clickin.

I second legalize it. I've been running a WI freewheel on an old Nishiki hybrid beater for a year (under all conditions) and have absolutely no complaints. Props too for the ENO Eccentric hub. I use one on my fixie (hey, another converted hybrid!) and have never had an issue with it.

My current build is waiting for a DOS ENO freewheel.

- 48t chainring
- flip / flop hub (16 / 18 free, 17 fixed)

I've yet to hear or read someone say those freewheels aren't worth the money.

Yeah! My Shimano fw corroded to death in the wisconsin winter, and the unsealed Adventure Components "888" had serious freezing problems below 25F (not that I worry about that much in my new warm state.)

But yeah, I'm tired of slipping freewheels. Now I just need the $80 for an eno.
